The system is very likely to intensify further in the next 24 hours and move west-northwestwards along south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, which is currently active over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, rainfall activities including thunderstorms with lightning are likely to be experienced.
IMD Bhubaneswar said a cyclonic circulation is active over the north-east and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over southeast Arabian Sea around June 5.
The alert has been issued for the districts like Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Kandhamal, Khordha, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Gajapatai and Ganjam.
Taking the rise in temperature into consideration, the MeT office has issued yellow warning for heatwave for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Sonepur districts today.
The deep depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.
Then, it is likely to move initially north-northwestwards till May 12 morning and thereafter, it will recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts, the MeT office predicted.
Collectors of 18 districts have been put on alert, orders issued for necessary precautionary action, said Odisha SRC Satyabrata Sahu ahead of a possible summer cyclone. Collectors have been asked to keep the cyclone shelters ready with provision of basic amenities like water, toilet, etc.
The weather bureau has sounded Orange Warning for thunderstorm, lightening, hail and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Kalahandi districts tomorrow.
While the state capital Bhubaneswar recorded 38.6 degree Celsius, Sambalpur boiled at 38.2 degree Celsius followed by Keonjhar (37.6), Hirakud (37.4), Gopalpur (34.6), Puri (33.4) and Paradip (33).
An ‘Orange Warning’ for thunderstorm with lightning and hailstorm has also been issued for several districts for the next 24 hours.
As per IMD, thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Cuttack in the next 24 hours.
The orange warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind with speed reaching up to 40-50kmph and hailstorm has been issued for the districts of Keonjhar, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri.
“There will be no large change in the maximum temperature (day temperature) over the districts of Odisha during the next 4-5 days,” the IMD said.
