Twin low pressure likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha
Odisha is likely to witness continued spells of heavy to very heavy rain as two low pressure systems take shape over the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low pressure area is expected to form over northwest Madhya Pradesh and its adjoining areas within the next 24 hours, while another system is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha.
According to the weather report, the two systems are likely to result in widespread showers across Odisha over the next several days. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has warned of significant rainfall activity in more than half of the state, along with gusty winds and thunderstorm conditions.
In view of the forecast, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for 24 districts Sunday and Monday. Moderate to heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm is expected, with wind speeds likely reaching 30 to 40 kmph. The alert has been sounded for coastal, northern and western districts, including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar, where the possibility of very heavy rainfall has also been flagged.
The IMD has also stated that Odisha will continue to experience isolated heavy rainfall between July 13 and 19, with very heavy rain specifically expected on July 13 and 14. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely at many places across the state during the next seven days.
While heavy rainfall activity is expected to persist until July 19, the system is likely to weaken post-July 17, leading to a gradual decline in rainfall intensity across most districts. However, some areas in southern and northern Odisha may continue to receive sporadic showers during this period.
The IMD has advised residents, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone regions, to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea due to likely strong winds. Meanwhile, the state administration is on alert and monitoring the situation to respond to any potential emergencies arising from the heavy rainfall.
