Poland scored both their goals in the fourth and final quarter through Wojciech Rutkowski (50th) and Robert Pawlak (54th). India will now face last edition's runners-up Belgium in the quarterfinal on December 1.
Belgium will thus play the winner of the match between hosts India and Poland while Malaysia take on France, who topped Pool B with an all-win record after recording their third win in the preliminary league by thrashing Canada 11-1. France finished with nine points from three matches.
Ultimate showcase of young Hockey talent – the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup – kicked off in Bhubaneswar Kalinga Stadium on November 24. The much-anticipated tournament which will see 16 top teams from across the globe vie for the title, was declared open by his Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal. In a shocking result, defending champions India were rendered clueless in their opening encounter as they went down 4-5 against a low-ranked France. Belgium, South Africa, Malaysia, Chile, Germany, Pakistan, Canada and Poland also started their campaign on the opening day of the tournament.
The problems had started from the morning itself as a lot of people could log into the app but failed to get the live video. Though things were resolved soon and people could watch the Belgium versus South Africa and the other matches of the day, things went haywire in the evening when people started logging in in large numbers ahead of India's match against France.
For India, vice-captain Sanjay also scored a hattrick, converting penalty corners in 15th, 57th, and 58th minutes after Uttam Singh had opened the scoring for the hosts in the 10th minute with a superb goal.
Pakistan have a controversial history of playing in Bhubaneswar and the local hockey fans still remember the aggressive and obscene behaviour of the Pakistan senior team members after their win against hosts India in the 2014 Champions Trophy at the Kalinga Stadium.
India, who are grouped in Pool C, will begin their campaign on December 6 against Russia.
