Union Minister Pratap Sarangi today came down heavily on Odisha government for allegedly sitting silent after evacuating people during cyclone ‘Yaas’ that had hit the coast in north Odisha on May 26 leaving a trail of destruction.

The damaging cyclone Yaas, which brought life to a standstill in several eastern states including West Bengal and Odisha just last month has also brought cheer to many just ahead of the rice sowing season.

It has been hardly two weeks since Cyclone Yaas ravaged parts of Odisha, the India Meteorological Centre (IMD) has predicted formation of another low-pressure area over North Bay of Bengal (BoB) around June 11. This may cause the Southwest Monsoon to advance into most parts of Odisha.

For the family of Hemant Das, the sky was so blue and serene but on May 26, suddenly everything changed. Clouds darkened over their fate just like the sky when hostile winds and torrential downpour made their life miserable.

A seven-member central team will arrive in Odisha tomorrow to assess the damage caused by cyclone Yaas which hit the State on May 26.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik proposed two long-term solutions during the Prime Minister's post-Cyclone Yaas review meeting on Friday (May 28). The Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Pradeep Jena informed that the Chief Minister requested for a modern technology-based cyclone resilient electricity system. The Commissioner also said that the state asked the Prime Minister for long-term measures for protection of coastal areas from frequent cyclones in the state.
