The very severe cyclonic storm Yaas has already started to batter the northern coastline of Odisha with powerful winds and rain as it is set to make landfall in a few hours from now. As per the statement of the India Meteorological Department, the storm will cross the Odisha-Bengal coasts to the north of Dhamra and south of Balasore around noon today with sustained wind speed of 130 to 140 kmph. 

Just a few hours before the landfall of 'Yass' a miniature tornado created havoc in parts of Hooghly and North 24 Parganas on Tuesday evening. Though the weather department said that these kinds of tornadoes are common ahead of a major cyclone but also admitted that it is very unlikely at a place which is nearly 210 kilometres away from the landfall.

The velocity of very severe cyclonic storm Yaas has now decreased to 12 km per hour from 15-16 km per hour. According to Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena, due to decrease in the velocity of the cyclone, the landfall is likely to be delayed and will be around 10-11 AM at a wind speed of around 130 kmph.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas is just 70 Kms away from Dhamra. According to the latest update of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Yaas is 70 Kms away from Bhadrak's Dhamra, while it is 90 kms away from Paradip and about 130 kms away from Balasore district.

Chandbali in Odisha's Bhadrak district experienced heavy rainfall with gusty winds around midnight just hours ahead of Cyclone Yaas landfall on May 26th noon.

Flight operations suspended at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar. In view of the impending very severe cyclonic storm Yaas, flight operations have been suspended at the Bhubaneswar Airport. Flight operations will remain suspended at the airport from May 25th 11 PM till 5 AM of May 27th.

Cyclone Yaas has now turned into a very severe cyclonic storm. As per the earlier predictions of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Yaas intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm in the evening today. As per IMD Chief, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the cyclone now lays about 180 km off Paradip coast.

Ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Yaas, heavy winds wrecked havoc on the coast of Rajnagar in Kendrapada. Misfortune struck a family, which was preparing to evacuate in the nick of time.

Cyclonic storm Yaas has turned into a 'Very Severe Cyclonic Storm' and is currently moving at a speed of about 15kmph in the sea, informed the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Move over Covid-19; Cyclone ‘Yaas’ is here! With the ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ in the Bay of Bengal all set to wreak havoc on the northern coast, Corona has expectedly taken a backseat in the state.

With Cyclone Yaas hurtling towards Odisha, the state carried out a massive evacuation drive. As of 4 PM on May 25, over 2 lakh people were evacuated to various Cyclone shelters and other safe shelters in the state. Evacuation drives were being carried out in as many as 10 districts which are expected to be affected by Cyclone Yaas.

Cyclone Yaas will cross Odisha carrying winds at speed of 155-165 kilometres per hour with gustiness of 185 kilometres per hour. India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chief, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the cyclone is on course to cross Odisha coast between Dhamra and Balasore tomorrow noon. The IMD chief also said that interior Odisha districts may also experience high wind speed under its influence.

At a time when the State machinery is busy in evacuating people from the line of fire of Cyclone Yaas, allegations of mismanagement at a cyclone shelter in Baunshagadia village under Balasore’s Bahanaga block dampened the spirit of other people who wanted to shift to shelter points.

The maximum number of 74,132 people have been shifted in Balasore district, followed by 73,103 from Bhadrak and 41.685 from Kendrapara

Dhamra, the likely landfall place of Cyclone Yaas, is experiencing scattered rainfall since yesterday and wind speed is gradually increasing.
