The Odisha unit of Congress on Tuesday criticised the State government over the management of cyclone Yaas and relief distribution in the aftermath of the natural calamity.

The Water Resources Department has incurred a loss of Rs 87 crore due to the Cyclone ‘Yaas’ and heavy rain in the aftermath of the storm that battered the vast areas of north Odisha.

Though the very severe cyclone Yaas, which left a trail of devastation in Balasore and other districts of Odisha on May 26 spared lives, it blown up everything shattering many lives in the State.

Water Resources department chief engineer Jyotirmaya Rath today said that the government has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Rs 6000-7000 crore for a long-term plan to check high tides during storm.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik proposed two long-term solutions during the Prime Minister's post-Cyclone Yaas review meeting on Friday (May 28). The Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Pradeep Jena informed that the Chief Minister requested for a modern technology-based cyclone resilient electricity system. The Commissioner also said that the state asked the Prime Minister for long-term measures for protection of coastal areas from frequent cyclones in the state.

The government’s tall claims of smooth management of evacuation during the recent cyclone ‘Yaas’ has fallen flat after hundreds of people at Lunga panchayat under Basudevpur block in the district who took shelter at a school building alleged sub-standard service of food to them for the last five days, thanks to administrative apathy.

It was in May last year when India was battling the first wave of Covid pandemic and no picture of any vaccine in sight, when the nature struck with super ferocity with a tropical cyclone, probably the strongest the country's eastern coast had faced since two decades ago, the Prime Minister turned his attention fast towards Odisha where the storm had brushed along causing major damages before wreaking havoc in Bengal. 

The Odisha government has undertaken restoration of roadways and drinking water supply on a war-footing in all the districts majorly affected by the very severe cyclonic storm Yaas which wreaked havoc in north-coastal and some other adjoining interior regions of the State on May 26.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conducted an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit areas of the State and announced Rs 500 crore financial assistance for immediate relief activities.

The water-level in the upper stream of Subarnarekha at Jamshola Ghat in West Bengal-Odisha border touched the danger-level at around 9 pm yesterday.

The situation at Similipal was brought under control by swift relief and restoration works taken up on war footing by the concerned district administration, NDRF personnel, forest and fire services departments.

Incessant rain under the impact of cyclone Yaas has triggered flood-like situation in Subarnarekha river which is flowing above the danger mark at Jamosala ghat in Balasore district. 

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday reviewed the restoration operations in the aftermath of Cyclone Yaas and directed officials to carry out the works on a war-footing basis.

Moderate flood is expected in Baitarani River as heavy rainfall continued in Odisha in the aftermath of cyclone Yaas which made landfall on May 26th. According to the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner, Pradeep Jena water level in Baitarani River is above danger mark at Anandpur and Akhuapada.

The Additional Chief Secretary of Health Department PK Mohapatra has written to the districts collectors of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Puri, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul and Khordha on Thursday.
