With the latest update from Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) that the Cyclone Yaas is likely to make landfall somewhere around Balasore district, the State machinery is gearing up to evacuate vulnerable people from its path.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday took stock of preparedness with Chief Ministers of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal to deal with cyclonic storm Yaas (pronounced as 'Yass') in the Bay of Bengal.

Coastal districts in the northern parts of the State including  Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore and Bhadrak are most likely bear the brunt of cyclone ‘Yaas’ which is likely to hit the coasts between North Odisha and West Bengal on May 26 noon.

As per the prediction of all models (IMD to US, Europe and Japan), Yaas will make landfall between Kendrapada and Bhadrak on May 26 in the morning to afternoon hours.

The deep depression over East-central Bay of Bengal, which had remained practically stationary during past 6 hours, today intensified into cyclonic storm. It is situated about 600 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 540 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 650 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha) and 630 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), as per the latest bulletin issued by the IMD.

The deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the Odisha-West Bengal coast on May 26 noon. 

More than 75,000 volunteers have been put on standby in Bangladesh to deal with the possible effects of Cyclone 'Yaas' which is now developing over the east-central Bay of Bengal, officials said.

With the cyclone Yaas getting closer to Odisha coast, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued Red Warning to eight coastal districts of the State for May 26.

While reviewing the preparedness for the impending Cyclone Yaas, the Director General (DG) of Odisha Police, Abhay on Sunday said that the police force in the coastal districts have been put on high alert to deal with any eventuality that might arise due to the possible Cyclone Yaas

In the likelihood of Cyclone Yaas hitting the shores of Odisha, the Minister of Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water, Law, Housing and Urban Development on Sunday reviewed the preparedness and directed to strictly follow the SOP and instructions in this regard.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has started positioning rescue teams in Odisha ahead of impending cyclone ‘Yaas’, which is expected to make landfall somewhere between Paradip and Sagar Islands on May 26 as per the present prediction made by the India Meteorological Department (IMD)

As cyclone Yaas comes closer to make landfall on the east coast of India, the Eastern Railway has cancelled 25 running through this route.

In view of the threat posed by the approaching cyclonic storm 'Yaas', 22 NDRF teams have been deployed in the coastal districts of Odisha as of now.

"This is in preparation for the approaching Cyclone Yaas and the operations are ongoing since May 21. To date, the IAF has airlifted 606 personnel and 57 tonnes of load for this purpose."
