Astarang quadruple murder was pre-planned: CB ADG BK Sharma
Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch of Odisha police today arrested a couple in connection with the September 21 murder of a retired government servant and three of his family members including his two minor daughters at Astarang in Puri district.
Informing this to media, Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma said the accused couple, Himadri Das alias Rahim & Ayesha Begum was arrested from Hailakandi district in Assam.
“It was a pre-planned murder and motive behind the heinous act was monetary gain,” said Sharma.
Giving details about the modus operandi of the crime, the official said the accused were known to the family of the deceased Dinabandhu Mallick through a distant relative.
“After visiting Mallick’s family 2-3 times and knowing about his financial status, they had planned to loot. On the fateful day, the accused had arrived in the evening and stayed at his house. Late in the night, both the accused and the deceased had a verbal duel when the latter denied the former’s request for some financial help,” said Sharma.
According to their plan, the accused then killed the couple first with the sharp edged weapons they had brought with them. Later they brutally killed the deceased’s minor daughters Pranati and Saswati with the same weapon and fled with valuables including gold ornaments and a bike.
“They abandoned the bike on the outskirts of the town and went to Raipur via Angul the next day. From there they went to Assam via Bhopal,” Sharma revealed adding that both the accused are on transit remand and would be produced in a local court today.
The official stated some incriminating documents have been seized from their possession.
“Investigation in the matter is on,” he said.
