After being stripped of vice-captaincy, out-of-form KL Rahul is all set to lose his place in the playing XI for the third Test match against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Fellow opener Shubman Gill is in all likelihood to replace Rahul, who is currently going through a horror patch. Rahul has just managed to score 125 runs in his last 10 innings – the worst among the top Indian batters.

As per sources, though Rahul has complete backing from coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma, it’s not the same inside the dressing room and the selectors.

As per a BCCI official, the idea was to help struggling Rahul as much as we could. His position in the squad is questionable. Though Rahul has done well in the past in overseas Tests, he is not at the same level as some players who are fighting for a place in the team. But there should not be much tinkering with the playing XI that is winning. That is why he was given a chance to remain in the team.

Meanwhile, former India medium pacer Venkatesh Prasad fired a fresh salvo at Rahul.

“There is a view that KL Rahul has an outstanding overseas Test record. But stats speak otherwise. He has a test avg of 30 overseas in 56 innings. He has scored 6 overseas centuries but followed it up with a string of low scores that’s why averaging 30,” tweeted Prasad.
