On average, 15 people are killed in road accidents in Odisha on a daily basis. The annual report on ‘Road Accidents in India’ released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated so. 

As per the report, a total of 5,467 people died in road accidents in Odisha in 2022, registering an increase of 7.6 percent as compared to 2021. 

The cause of concern for Odisha is that it is placed at the top position in the number of critical injuries. The percentage of such persons is 46.9 percent as against the national average of 36.5 percent. 

Odisha is placed at 13th position among the states in terms of number of road mishap deaths and injuries. 

The report painted grim a picture nationally. On average, 1,264 accidents and 462 deaths were reported every day or 53 accidents and 19 deaths every hour in the country in 2022.

Tamil Nadu with 64,105 accidents (13.9 %) recorded the highest number of road accidents in 2022 followed by Madhya Pradesh (54,432 i.e.11.8%). Uttar Pradesh (22,595 i.e., 13.4 %) topped the States in respect of the number of fatalities due to road accidents followed by Tamil Nadu (17,884 i.e., 10.6%).
