  • Lemons are high in acid.
  • Hence if consumed almost every day then you may experience dentinal hypersensitivity

Taking warm lemon water the first time in the morning is a routine many health-conscious people follow, especially those who are keen on losing those extra calories.

Lemon has multiple health benefits and hence is in general very good for health. But like every healthy thing, there are certain side effects of drinking lemon water that are more often overlooked.

Excess drinking of lemon water leads to enamel erosion, and tooth decay

Lemons are high in acid and hence if you consume lemon juice almost every day then you may experience dentinal hypersensitivity as well as tooth decay due to the acidic nature of lemon. You can slow down this process of tooth decay by using a straw while sipping lemon water instead of letting it come in direct contact with the teeth

You must also avoid brushing your teeth immediately after drinking lemon water and should drink lots of water along with lemon juice.

It may trigger migraines

Citrus fruits have a tendency to trigger headaches and migraines. Since lemon produces tyramine which causes headaches in most people, if you start getting headaches or migraine symptoms after drinking lemon water, you must reduce your intake of lemon juice and add more water to the drink.

Increases stomach problems and acidity symptoms

Consumption of citrus fruits in large quantities often leads to gastrointestinal problems such as acid reflux, vomiting, nausea, and heartburn. Hence it is advisable to consult your doctor before making drinking lemon water a regular habit.

Health experts often advise that those with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) must limit their intake of lemon juice.

Worsens mouth ulcers

Mouth ulcers or Canker sores are painful, small lesions that develop inside the mouth. Studies have shown that citrus fruits can cause mouth ulcers or even worsen their symptoms. It is hence best to wait till the ulcers have healed completely before starting to drink lemon juice.

Lemon skin is a host for harmful germs

Lemons host a lot of microorganisms or germs on their skin that can lead to dangerous diseases especially if you put those lemon wedges served with drinks in your mouth. The best way is to put lemon juice in your drink and throw away the skin.
