Odia-style chicken curry is a flavourful and easy chicken recipe, perfect for any occasion be it a lunch or dinner party with friends and family. While there are many different styles of chicken gravies cooked in different parts of the country, this Odisha-specific chicken recipe is unique in its taste and flavour. The curry is best served with steaming hot rice or roti and parathas. 

Ingredient required

  1. 500 gms chicken
  2. 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  3. Salt to taste
  4. 4 tsp curd
  5. 50 ml mustard oil
  6. 3 medium size potatoes
  7. 1 teaspoon sugar
  8. 2 bay leaves
  9. 2 inches cinnamon
  10. 2 cardamoms
  11. 3 chopped onions
  12. 2 large onions (make a paste)
  13. 4-5 tsp of ginger/garlic paste
  14. 1 large tomato (chopped)
  15. 1 1/2 tsp Red chili powder
  16. 2 tsp of cinnamon & cardamom powder

How to make

  1. Marinate the chicken with turmeric powder, salt & curd. Keep it aside.
  2. Heat mustard oil on frying pan, then add potato & fry for some time till it turns into golden brown. Then remove it & keep it on a plate aside.
  3. Again add some oil in the frying pan and add bay leaf, cinnamon & cardamom.
  4. Now add onion paste & ginger garlic paste and stir for another 3-4 mins.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and red chili powder and mix well.
  6. Add little water. When the water dries out and oil begins to separate from the masala, add chicken. Mix it all properly.
  7. Then stir the same continuously for about 15-20 minutes.
  8. Then add the fried potatoes and a cup of water. Cover the pan & let it cook for 10 minutes on medium flame till the potato & chicken are properly cooked.
  9. Finally, add cinnamon, cardamom powder and chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame. Odia-style chicken curry is ready to serve.
