Dubai: Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets in the eighth match of the Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a score of 142, Kolkata wrapped up the total with 12 balls to spare. For Kolkata Shubman Gill was the top scores with 70 runs from 62 balls.

Earlier Sunrisers Hyderabad scraped their way to 142/4 with Manish Pandey being the top scorer for SRH with 51 off 38 balls. Pandey added 62 runs for the third wicket with Wriddhiman Saha to help Hyderabad to the modest total.

Wriddhiman Saha, who was included in the squad in place of the injured Vijay Shankar, scored 30 off 31 balls.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had won the toss and elected to bat.

Dubai: Sunrisers Hyderabad scraped their way to 142/4 against Kolkata Knight Riders in the eighth match of the Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Manish Pandey topscored for SRH with 51 off 38 balls, adding 62 runs for the third wicket with Wriddhiman Saha.

Captain David Warner got to spend more time in the middle than he did in the previous match in which he faced just six balls before being dismissed. On Saturday, he scored 36 off 30 balls but fell to spinner Varun Chakravarthy just as he was looking to shift gears.

His opening partner Jonny Bairstow successfully reviewed a caught behind decision that went against him off Pat Cummins only to be bowled the very next ball of the over. Wriddhiman Saha, who was included in the squad in place of the injured Vijay Shankar, never managed to get going and scored 30 off 31 balls.

KKR’s record buy Pat Cummins followed up his underwhelming show in the first match with a masterful performance on Saturday, returning with figures of 1/19. Apart from Chakravarthy, Andre Russell was the third wicket taker for KKR, having accounted for the wicket of Manish Pandey.

Brief scores: SRH 142/4 in 20 overs (Manish Pandey 51, David Warner 36; Andre Russell 1/16, Pat Cummins 1/19) vs KKR

Abu Dhabi: It’s a game between two currently bottom-placed teams. Twice champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will face 2016 winners SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) here on Saturday. So far, both have played one match each and lost.

After a dismal show against defending champions Mumbai Indians in their campaign opener, KKR will face the David Warner-led SRH, who went down to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their tournament opener. Both teams will now be craving for a win to gain confidence.

With the likes of Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan in their middle-order, KKR have the capability to overhaul any given target. However, the duo failed to capitalise against Mumbai and the Dinesh Karthik-led KKR ended up on the losing side.

Despite the losses, both the sides are well aware of each other’s strengths and will surely not take the contest lightly.

Against Mumbai, explosive Caribbean batter Sunil Narine opened the innings with Shubhman Gill but the pair disappointed after falling cheaply and the KKR team management might make a change in their opening combination. Similarly, Nikhil Naik is likely to be axed from the playing XI as the 25-year-old could only contribute a single run against MI.

The middle-order featuring Karthik, Nitish Rana, Russell, and Morgan will need to step up. If any of them gets going, things would pretty much become easier for KKR.

The KKR bowlers too need to raise the bar. Pat Cummins was snapped by the franchise for a whopping Rs.15.5 crore for this edition. However, the Aussie quick failed to prove his worth after being hammered for 49 runs from his three overs.

The 27-year-old, however, was handy with the bat with a 12-ball 33-run cameo and demonstrated that he was capable of rescuing his team while batting down the order. Cummins, however, first needs to perform with the ball and he will definitely try to silence his critics.

If KKR want to make a comeback, the pace duo should receive support from their spinners Narine and Kuldeep Yadav.

On the other hand, SRH’s middle-order instability was exposed in their opening match against RCB. Opener David Warner, too, had a flop show with the willow and it was his partner Jonny Bairstow, who showed resistance in the middle with his 43-ball 61.

However, after the England batsman departed, the entire SRH team fell like a pack of cards, barring Manish Pandey, who chipped in with valuable 34 but failed to take his team to victory.

Also, Vijay Shankar and Priyam Garg disappointed after a poor show in the middle-order and along with the SRH team management, Warner would equally be concerned about it.

Sharjah: Sanju Samson will like to continue his dream form while presence of Jos Buttler puts Rajasthan Royals on even keel with Kings XI Punjab in an IPL game which promises to be yet another six-hitting competition.

Coming into the match after morale-boosting victories, both KXIP and the Royals would look to build a winning momentum after starting the tournament as underdogs.

Rahul, touted as a future India captaincy material, plundered a record 132 not out off just 69 balls with the help of seven sixes in a much bigger ground in Dubai to lead KXIP to a resounding 97-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. He did get reprieve twice when his opposite number Virat Kohli dropped a couple of sitters.

The 28-year-old Rahul, one of the cleanest hitters of the ball, notched up the highest score by an Indian in IPL history and he would like to continue in the same vein on a ground which has short boundaries on all sides.

The young Samson, on the other hand, made a mincemeat of the Chennai Super Kings bowlers, hitting nine sixes in his 32-ball 74 before Jofra Archer joined the party with a four-six burst in the final over in the match played at the same venue here on Tuesday.

The Royals captain Steve Smith also chipped in with a 47-ball 69 while playing his first match after concussion related issues in the United Kingdom.

Buttler, who missed the first match due to quarantine rules as he reached UAE separately with his family, is expected to open alongside Yashashvi Jaiswal while Smith will take David Miller’s position in the batting order. Tom Curran and Jofra Archer will again complete the four-player overseas composition.

For KXIP, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell would look to make amends for his low score (5) in the earlier match against RCB.

In the bowling department, Mohammed Shami and West Indian Sheldon Cottrell led the pace-bowling department quite well for KXIP while the likes of leg-spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin grabbed three wickets apiece against RCB.

The Royals managed to defend their 216 run target with Archer bowling brilliantly at the death and leg spinner Rahul Tewatia (3/37 in 4 overs) inflicting top order damage.

The sore point was yet another poor show from Jaydev Unadkat, who has never been able to raise his IPL game save one odd season with Rising Pune Supergiants.

It will be interesting if Smith and Andrew McDonald decide to try out rookie Kartik Tyagi or seasoned Varun Aaron in Unadkat’s place keeping his lack of pace and short boundaries in mind.

The Squads (From):

Kings XI Punjab: KL Rahul (c), Mayank Agarwal, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Shami, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Karun Nair, James Neesham, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Ishan Porel, Arshdeep Singh, Murugan Ashwin, Krishnappa Gowtham, Harpreet Brar, Deepak Hooda, Chris Jordan, Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh, Darshan Nalkande, Ravi Bishnoi, Simran Singh (wk), Jagadeesha Suchith, Tajinder Singh, Hardus Viljoen.

Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith (captain), Jos Buttler, Robin Uthappa, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Manan Vohra, Kartik Tyagi, Akash Singh, Oshane Thomas, Andrew Tye, David Miller, Tom Curran, Aniruddha Joshi, Shreyas Gopal, Riyan Parag, Varun Aaron, Shashank Singh, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Mayank Markande.

Dubai: Delhi Capitals defeated Chennai Super Kings by 44 runs in an Indian Premier League match in Dubai on Friday.

Prithvi Shaw’s innings earned him the Man-Of-The-Match award.

Earlier, Delhi Capital’s opener Prithvi Shaw smashed 64 off 43 balls while Rishabh Pant contributed 37 off 25 to set a decent target of 175 for Chennai Super Kings.

Shaw’s innings had nine fours and a six while he added 94 for the first wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (35 off 27 balls). However, skipper Shreyas Iyer (26 off 22 balls) had a rare off-day as he consumed a few dot balls and DC may have ended at least 10 to 15 runs short of a safe score.

Dubai: After a lacklustre outing against Rajasthan Royals, three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on Delhi Capitals (DC) in a league encounter at the Dubai International Cricket stadium here on Friday.

In their last game, the M.S. Dhoni-led side suffered a 16-run defeat, and barring Faf du Plessis most of the CSK players failed in leaving an impact. Moreover, Dhoni’s decision to come down the order backfired and the charismatic captain received a backlash from not only fans but also many cricketing greats like Sunil Gavaskar, Gautam Gambhir, and others. Dhoni later clarified on his decision to come lower down the order. The captain himself wasn’t happy with the bowlers.

Also, the decision to replace an unfit Ambati Rayudu with Ruturaj Gaikwad didn’t click as the debutant was back in the dugout without troubling the scorers. Moreover, CSK openers failed in both games and that is another cause of concern for the team management.

Sam Curran, who has been promoted up the order, played a cameo in both games but the England all-rounder needs to spend some time in the middle. Dhoni had hit three maximums in the final over against the Royals, but that couldn’t win the game.

It will be interesting to see how the CSK skipper will now approach the game against Delhi.

On the other hand, Delhi were on the verge of defeat in their first game against Kings XI Punjab before Marcus Stoinis rescued his side to push the contest to the Super Over decider. Later, it was Kagiso Rabada who showed his talent with the ball and ensured the night belonged to DC.

The DC top-order failed to fire against Punjab while Rishabh Pant and skipper Shreyas Iyer showed some resistance with the bat. But they were unable to convert their efforts into a big innings. It was Stoinis, who hammered 53 off 21 balls to propel his side to a fighting total.

The team management is likely to stick with the same combination on Friday, but at the same time it will also hope the top-order to provide an ideal start.

Meanwhile, the DC bowlers had a satisfactory outing against Punjab but the major concern for the Iyer-led team would be the injury of ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked a couple of wickets in his very first over, but had to leave the field later. Ashwin’s recovery becomes crucial here.

CSK have dominated DC, winning 15 of the 21 games. But both the teams will start afresh and will be equally desperate to outdo each other. And fans can expect another nail-biting contest on Friday.

Dubai: Kings XI Punjab captain K.L. Rahul on Thursday smashed a few IPL records with a blistering 69-ball 132 — the highest individual score by an Indian player in the IPL — that helped him cross the 2,000-run mark in the cash-rich league and take his team to 206/3 in 20 overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore here.

This was Rahul’s second IPL century and fourth overall in T20s. It was also the highest score by any Indian in the IPL, surpassing the previous record of 128 not out held by Rishabh Pant.

Rahul reached three figures off 62 balls and was helped over the line by his opposite number Virat Kohli dropping a couple of sitters in the 17th and 18th over. He ended the innings unbeaten on 132 off 69 balls, his innings laced with 14 fours and seven sixes. This is the first century by any player in the ongoing season of the league.

On the way, he also became the fastest Indian batsman to 2,000 IPL runs, surpassing an eight-year-old record held by batting great Sachin Tendulkar. Rahul brought up the landmark in his 60th innings while Tendulkar reached the landmark in 63 innings.

Dubai: Skipper KL Rahul smashed the first century of the 2020 Indian Premier League to propel Kings XI Punjab to a daunting 206 for 3 against Royal Challengers Bangalore here on Thursday.

Rahul, who was dropped in the 17th and then again in the 18th over by RCB skipper Virat Kohli, played the role of sheet anchor, scoring 132 off 69 balls that was laced with 14 boundaries and seven sixes.

With his spectacular knock, he surpassed Rishabh Pant to post the highest individual score by an Indian in IPL history.

Playing his 60th innings, Rahul also became the fastest Indian to reach the 2000 IPL runs.

The stylish batsman clipped away a full length delivery to fine leg for four to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record, who reached the milestone in 63 matches.

Opening the batting with Rahul, Mayank Agarwal (26) looked dangerous and shared a 57-run stand with his captain. However, with the introduction of spin into the attack in the seventh over, Yuzvendra Chahal (1/25) struck with the last ball, cleaning up Agarwal (26) with a delightful googly.

Nicholas Pooran (17) and Glenn Maxwell (5) once again failed to make an impact as Shivam Dube (2/33) accounted for the duo. Karun Nair pitched in with an eight-ball 15.

The pace troika of Umesh Yadav (0/35), Dale Steyn (0/57) and Navdeep Saini (0/37) had a torrid time as the KXIP skipper was on fire in his second game as captain.

All players wore black armbands to honour Australian cricketer turned commentator Dean Jones, who died in Mumbai due to a cardiac arrest on Thursday.

Former Australian Cricketer Dean Mervyn Jones was a great cricketer, coach and commentator. He played both in Test and ODI format for Australia. He boasted an excellent record in Test cricket, and is best remembered for his batting and fielding in the ODI format. During the late 1980s and early 1990s he was regarded among the best ODI batsmen in the world.

Most Memorable Innings
Vs West Indies, 1984

Jones was selected on the 1984 tour of the West Indies after Graham Yallop had to pull out due to injury. He was not picked in the original XI, but was drafted into the side after Steve Smith fell ill. Jones himself was very ill before the Test, and deemed his score of 48 on his debut as his best knock.

Vs India: Chennai Test, 1986

Jone’s most notable innings was against India and it came only in his third innings at Chennai in 1986. However the Test finished in a draw. Jones beat dehydration and braved extremely hot and humid conditions to score a double century of 210. He was frequently vomiting on the pitch. It was one of the defining moments in Jone’s career and one of the epic Test innings in Australian Cricket Folklore.

Ashes, 1986-87

Dean Jones became a thorn in England’s Ashes glory early enough in his career, as he romped his way to a superb unbeaten 184 at Sydney in 1986-87, engineering a consolation 55- run win for Australia after the series had been lost.

Vs West Indies, Adelaide, 1988-89

Another triumphant moment arrived in 1988-89 against the West Indians. In the fifth Test on a placid Adelaide pitch, he hammered Marshall, Pat Patterson, Ambrose and Walsh to pile up a career-best 216. The series, once again, had been lost and the match was an inconsequential draw, but it was a great statement for Jones who had missed the first two matches of the series.

Benson & Hedges World Series, 1988-89

Jones scored 7 hundreds in ODIs during his career. But his most brilliant innings was witnessed in the deciding final of the Benson & Hedges World Series 1988-89, against the West Indian pace attack at Sydney. In a rain-curtailed innings against an attack comprising Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop and Courtney Walsh, Jones played a blinder as the rest struggled. When the 38 possible overs were completed, Jones was unbeaten on 93 off 82 balls, with eight fours and two sixes. West Indies won with 28 balls to spare, but Jones etched his name in the lists of world’s greatest batsmen in world cricket.

And the Controversies

Despite his abundance of talent, Jones’ strong personality and tendency to speak his mind sometimes landed him into trouble. It resulted in friction and conflict with teammates, other players and selectors. Arguably the most famous incident during his international career occurred on 16 January 1993 during the first ODI final of the 1992-93 Benson & Hedges World Series against West Indies at Sydney Cricket Ground, when he asked pacer Curtly Ambrose to remove the wristband he was wearing on his bowling arm. Riled by this request, Ambrose went on to take 5/32 for the match.
The most infamous incident took place when Jones’ commentating contract with Ten Sports was terminated after referring to South African player Hashim Amla as a ‘terrorist’ on 7 August 2006. When Amla, who is a Muslim with a full beard, took a catch, Jones was heard to say ‘the terrorist gets another wicket’. Jones made the comment during a commercial break, but the comment went to air live in South Africa as its broadcast had not been interrupted.

Mumbai: Former Australian test cricketer Dean Mervyn Jones died of a massive cardiac arrest here on Thursday at the age of 59.

He was in Mumbai to participate in the commentary panel of the Star Sports for the IPL’s 2020 edition that is currently underway in Dubai.

Born on March 24, 1961 at Coburg in Melbourne, Victoria, the right-handed top-order batsman played for Australia, Derbyshire, Durham and Victoria. Jones was a right-arm offbreak bowler as well.

He played 52 Test matches scoring 3631 runs at an average of 46.55. With a 216 as his best score, Jones scored 11 centuries.

Dubai: Ahead of their Thursday’s clash, if Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) looked for motivation from their head-to-head IPL record, they would have been a bit disappointed as little separated the two teams; both have won 12 matches each since the IPL began in 2008.

After enduring umpiring errors, followed by a Super Over heartbreak, in their campaign opener against Delhi Capitals (DC), the KL Rahul-led KXIP would look open their account against Virat Kohli’s RCB at the Dubai International Cricket stadium here on Thursday.

Against DC, Punjab rode on MayankAgarwal’s blistering 60-ball 89 to approach the 158-run target. While the other Punjab players failed to leave an impact, and the team suffering hiccups at regular intervals, it was Mayank who single-handedly propelled Punjab and very nearly sealed a win.

However, just when KXIP was on the brink of a win, needing just one off three deliveries, they ended up losing two wickets, and eventually the contest slipped into the Super Over. Later, in the Super Over, Kagiso Rabada ensured the night belonged to DC.

On Thursday, KXIP will aim to revisit their over dependence on the opening combo of Rahul and Agarwal, and expect the middle order, comprising Karun Nair, Glenn Maxwell and Nicholas Pooran, to fire.

While the self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle was not included in the playing XI against DC, the KXIP team management might bring him in a move to bolster the middle order by pushing the in-form Agarwal to No.3.

In bowling department, in-form pacer Mohammed Shami will once again try to replicate his previous performance where he had returned with impressive figures of 3/15.

West Indian pacer Sheldon Cottrell is expected to share the workload with Shami. Rookie leggie Ravi Bishnoi, who had a decent maiden outing against DC, is once again likely to feature in the XI as the team management would surely not want to make too many changes in the initial stage of the league.

In the other camp, Kohli’s RCB will be high on confidence after kicking-off their campaign with a 10-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

However, RCB has their own problems to overcome, especially in the pace department. Lethal South African pacer Dale Steyn did manage a wicket. However, the 37-year-old was nowhere close to his best. UmeshYadav also disappointed after leaking 48 runs from four overs and remaining wicketless.

Navdeep Saini and Shivam Dube were on target, picking up two wickets each, but it was leg-spinner YuzvendraChahal who took full advantage of the prevailing conditions and emerged as the ‘game-changer’ with three scalps.

RCB, who are yet to lay their hands on the coveted trophy in 12 attempts, will hope for a repeat of another spectacular opening from Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch. It was young Devdutt who smoked 56 off 42 deliveries to set the tone against SRH. With the likes of Kohli and South African superstar AB de Villiers in the middle order, another mouth-watering contest is on cards.

Abu Dhabi: Four-time champions Mumbai Indians rode on a quality knock from captain Rohit Sharma (80) and some decent show by their bowlers to hammer Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 49 runs in the fifth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Wednesday.

After Mumbai, who were put to bat, amassed a huge 195 for five wickets in 20 overs, their bowlers too stepped up and came all guns blazing to restrict their opponents to 146/9 in the allotted 20 overs.

Chasing the massive 196-run target, Kolkata lost both their openers — Shubhman Gill (7) and Sunil Narine (9) — within the first five overs with their scorecard reading 25/2. While Trent Boult dismissed Gill, James Pattinson accounted for Narine.

KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik (30) and NitishRana (24), however, scored at a brisk pace, taking their side past the 50-run mark in the next 2.4 overs.

The partnership didn’t last too long as Rahul Chahar trapped Karthik before the wicket in the 11th over. Just when KKR managed to add another six runs, Keiron Pollard sent Rana back to reduce the opponents to 77/4 in 11.4 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah, who conceded 43 runs in four overs against Chennai Super Kings, made a magnificent comeback and jolted KKR twice in an over. Both Eoin Morgan (16) Andre Russell (11) became the victim of Bumrah in the 16th over.

Boult struck again in the 17th over, this time to send back Nikhil Naik (1) as KKR reeled at 103/7. Pat Cummins, who had a horrible time with the ball earlier in the innings, showed his potential with the bat as he played a cameo of 12-ball 33 before being consumed by James Pattinson in the 19th over. Cummins innings somehow reduced the deficit but wasn’t enough to help KKR cross the line as the two-time IPL champions fell 49 short of the target.

For Mumbai, Bumrah, Pattinson, Rahul Chahar and Boult picked couple of wickets each.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit led from the front with his explosive 54-ball 80 as his side posted a challenging 195/5 in the allotted overs. Rohit’s blitzkrieg was decorated with three boundaries and six hits into the stands.

Apart from Rohit’s innings, it was some lacklustre bowling and fielding from Kolkata Knight Riders that helped Mumbai reach a good total.
After putting MI into bat, KKR managed to contain MI opener Quinton de Kock (1) early. However, their joy didn’t last long as the next batsman Suryakumar Yadav, along with Rohit, repaired the early damage quite comfortably.

The duo forged a 90-run partnership for the second wicket, before Yadav while trying to steal a single fell short of the crease.

Saurabh Tiwary then provided ideal support to his skipper as the pair then stitched together a 49-run partnership before the former became a victim of Sunil Narine in the 16th over with Mumbai’s scorecard reading 147/3.

Rohit, however, continued the destruction with his bat and received good support from Hardik Pandya (18). The MI skipper and Hardik while trying to accelerate the run rate fell to Shivam Mavi and Andre Russell towards the business end of the innings before Keiron Pollard scored 13 runs from the final over to help their side reach a good total.

While Mavi picked two wickets, Russell and Narine bagged one each. Pat Cummins, the most expensive purchase at the player auction, had a disappointing outing as he leaked 49 runs from his three overs and remained wicketless.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indian 195/5 (Rohit Sharma 80, Suryakumar Yadav 47; Shivam Mavi 2/32) beat KKR 146/9 (Pat Cummins 33, Dinesh Karthik 30; James Pattinson 2/25) by 49 runs.

Abu Dhabi: Rohit Sharma’s masterful 80 and some lacklustre bowling and fielding from Kolkata Knight Riders helped Mumbai Indians post 195/5 in the IPL match between the two sides at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Wednesday.

Rohit nearly played through the innings for his side, falling to Pat Cummins only in the 18th over. KKR managed to restrict MI in the last two overs after Rohit fell, with the four-time champions otherwise looking set to score more than 200 runs for much of the innings.

MI lost opener Quinton de Kock early. Suryakumar Yadav joined his skipper and the pair ended up giving their side a dominant start.

Rohit and Suryakumar put up 90 for the second wicket, before the latter fell while going for a risky double. Saurabh Tiwary and Hardik Pandya also gave able assistance to Rohit. Kieron Pollard, playing his 150th match for MI, tried to milk as many runs as he could from the last over, scoring 13 from seven balls.

Rohit made the most of the repeated short pitched deliveries that were bowled to him by the KKR bowlers, who had a forgettable day in the middle.

Pat Cummins, the most expensive international buy in the IPL, was creamed for 49 runs in three overs without tasting any success.

New Delhi: Any player, player support personnel or match official will be banned for up to three IPL matches and will be fined Rs 5 lakh if that person thrice breaches rules that bar carrying any mobile device, laptop computer, static/landline, or similar telephone capable of making calls in the Players and Match Officials Areas (PMOA) during IPL matches.

This, and other lesser penalties for these types of breaches, will be “immediately binding and non-appealable”, say rules enshrined in the BCCI’s minimum standards for PMOA during IPL matches.

The PMOA are broadly earmarked in and around the players’ dressing rooms and those occupied by match officials – umpires and match referee – at a stadium that is hosting a match. Accreditation cards, carrying the bearer’s photos, are issued to all players, match officials, and even waiters who serve in the PMOA.

For the first time breach of the relevant clauses relating to carrying of mobile/laptop devices, the fine is Rs 1 lakh while for a second breach by the same person the fine will be Rs 3 lakh. The BCCI’s Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) will impose these fines. The present ACU Head is Ajit Singh, a former Rajasthan Director General of Police, who was appointed in March 2018.

“Any decision made by the ACU Head in relation to any of the above, shall be the full, final and complete disposition of the matter, immediately binding and non-appealable,” say the PMOA rules.

Some people point out that since players earn lakhs and crores of rupees while playing in the IPL, so these fines would make little dent on their pockets. But former BCCI ACU head Neeraj Kumar says more than the monetary fine, the stigma of being banned for breach of rules sticks to players for the rest of their careers.

“These fines were always there but there was never any requirement to enforce these earlier because the breach didn’t happen. But the stain that even a temporary three-match ban leaves on you plays havoc with your career,” Kumar, a former Delhi Commissioner of Police, told IANS.

Kumar also pointed out that for a non-established cricketer staging a comeback to team after a ban could be more difficult than a seasoned player who is punished for the same offence. He cited the example of three Australian players — Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft — who were banned for being involved in a ball-tampering episode during the third Test against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, in March 2018.

While Cricket Australia, the governing body, banned Smith and Warner for 12 months each from international and domestic cricket, Bancroft, playing only his eighth Test, was handed a nine-month ban. Smith and Warner staged successful comebacks to international cricket and are presently captaining Rajasthan Royals and SunRisers Hyderabad respectively. However, Bancroft has so far not been able to become a permanent fixture in the Australian Test XI after the ban, though he played two Tests against England in August last year.

“If you are a Steve Smith, you may come back after the ban is over. But if you are a lesser player, you will probably never be able to return. The third player [Cameron Bancroft] along with Smith and Warner, suffered the most,” said Kumar, referring to the ban of three IPL matches.

“If there’s a struggling player and he undergoes difficulties, and then he is banned, it is as good as his career getting over. Unless you are a Steve Smith or a David Warner, you would not be able to come back,” he emphasised.

Is the quantum of punishment for this particular breach in IPL enough? “Rs 5 lakh is a very little amount for a top rung player who earns his match fee in crores. This amount wouldn’t make a difference to him. But if somebody is on the fringes and who earns a total of Rs 10 lakh or Rs 20 lakh, it becomes a big amount for him,” said Kumar.

The IPL was mired in controversy in 2013 when allegations of betting and match-fixing emerged, and several players, including S. Sreesanth were banned for various periods. The issue eventually reached the Supreme Court and the court expanded the scope of the case to include governance reforms in the BCCI. It led to a new BCCI constitution being framed, though a final verdict is yet to come.

Bhubaneswar: Not all heroes wear capes, but their indomitable challenger spirit undeniably makes them unique and separates them from the rest. Bringing stories of such real challengers who have inspired everyone in these times of Covid-19, players of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) paid homage to every Covid hero and decided to sport ‘My Covid Heroes’ jersey throughout the Indian Premiere League (IPL) tournament as a mark of tribute to all those who have strived to make the world a better place during the pandemic.

Of the many Covid heroes praised by RCB, one name that grabbed the attention of the people of Odisha was Nilachala Parida – a mountaineer from Bhubaneswar’s Delta chowk area who has been selling vegetables outside his house post enforcement of a nation-wide lockdown. He is doing so to raise funds to help government in this Covid battle and also support his family.

As a mark of respect, RCB all-rounder Chris Morris not only changed his Twitter handle name to Nilachala Parida but wore a jersey dedicated to the Covid hero from Odisha.

Thanking the team for this wonderful gesture, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik took to Twitter and said, “Appreciate Chris Morris and RCB for showcasing the selfless work of people like Nilachala Parida of Odisha at the grand stage of IPL-2020. These good samaritans inspire the society to stand up for those affected the most by the pandemic.”

Interestingly, it was not just Morris who paid such a tribute to India’s Covid-warriors, but all RCB players including their captain Virat Kohli joined the team in honouring the fighters. While Kohli changed his name to Simranjeet Singh, AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal also wore special ‘My Covid Heroes’ jerseys and changed Twitter profile names to Paritosh Pant and Dr Sachin Nayak, respectively. It is being said that all these jerseys will be later auctioned, and the fund generated would be utilised in the fight against the pandemic.

Sharjah: A total of 33 sixes were hit during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals which the Steve Smith-led side won at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

This was the same number of sixes hit during an IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018.

On Tuesday, Sanju Samson led the sixes chart with nine maximums, followed by Steve Smith (4), Jofra Archer (4), Shane Watson (4), Faf du Plessis (7), Sam Curran (2) and MS Dhoni (3).

Coming to the match, Samson’s blistering 32-ball 74 at No.3, fast bowler Jofra Archer’s fireworks with the bat — he carted four consecutive sixes in the last over — and leggie Rahul Tewatia’s three-wicket burst helped Rajasthan Royals to a comfortable 16-run win over Chennai Super Kings.

Along with Samson, Smith – who opened the batting – scored 69 runs as Rajasthan Royals posted a monstrous 217-run target for the Chennai Super Kings. The three-time champions finished with 200 for six wickets in 20 overs, despite a late surge from Faf du Plessis, who hammered a 37-ball 72.

While CSK will next face Delhi Capitals on Friday, Rajasthan Royals will lock horns with Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.

Sharjah: Sanju Samson and skipper Steve Smith smashed quickfire half-centuries to guide Rajasthan Royals to a formidable 216 for seven against Chennai Super Kings in an IPL match here on Tuesday.

Sent into bat, Rajasthan lost young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) in the third over but then Samson joined hands with Smith as the duo played sensibly initially before the Kerala wicket-keeper batsman went hammer and tongs at opposition spinners.

Samson (74 off 32) looked in great nick, while Smith, returning to competitive cricket after recovering from concussion suffered before the ODI series against England, made 67 off 49 balls to lay the base for Rajasthan’s total.

In the final over, Jofra Archer (27 off 8 balls) hit four sixes off Lungi Ngidi as Royals got 30 runs to take the score past 215.

In all, Royals hit 17 sixes with Samson accounting for nine of them and Smith and Archer having four each in their kitties.

While Smith played the second fiddle initially, Samson took the CSK spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla to task taking 95 runs of eight overs collectively.

Introduced into the attack in the seventh over, Jadeja was clobbered for consecutive sixes by Samson before Chawla went for four sixes in his first over — three by Samson and one by Smith.

Samson, thus, brought up his quickest IPL fifty in just 19 balls with the help of one boundary and six hits over the fence.

If that was not enough for Chawla, the leg-spinner again leaked in his next over as both Samson and Smith took him to cleaners.

CSK made a much-needed comeback in the match in the 12th over with twin blows in the form of in-form Samson and unlucky David Miller.

While after some great hitting display, Samson fell in search one too many, caught by Deepak Chahar off Lungi Ngidi, Miller departed two balls later in search on a non-existent double.

CSK made another comeback into the match in the 17th over when Sam Curran dismissed Rahul Tewatia and Riyan Parag before Smith departed in the 119th over in search of big hits.

In the last over, Jofra Archer used his long handle to great effect and smashed Ngidi to all parts of the ground and above it to pick up 30 runs.

Dubai: The opening match of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was watched by 20 crore people, said BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday.

As per Shah, this was the highest-ever opening day viewership for any sporting league in any country as defending champions Mumbai Indians faced Chennai Super Kings on September 19 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. MS Dhoni-led CSK defeated the four-time IPL champions by five wickets.

“Opening match of #Dream11IPL sets a new record! As per BARC, an unprecedented 20 crore people tuned in to watch the match. Highest ever opening day viewership for any sporting league in any country- no league has ever opened as big as this,” said the BCCI Secretary in a tweet while tagging BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, Uday Shankar – President of The Walt Disney Company, APAC, and Chairman of Star and Disney India – and Disney+Hotstar.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, IPL 2020 is being played across three venues in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) behind closed doors. The final of the cash-rich league is slated to be held on November 10, the venue of which is yet to be announced.

Sharjah: After an impressive outing in their IPL campaign opener against reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI), the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be up against the 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals in their second game of the season at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium here on Tuesday.

For the Steve Smith-captained Royals, this will be the first match of the season. Looking at CSK’s close win over Mumbai, the Royals’ team management would seek something extra from their players against the three-time champions that have dominated the league in almost every season.

The ‘Yellow Brigade’ started the season in the absence of two of their star players — Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh – who have opted out of the tournament for personal reasons. However, class acts by Ambati Rayudu (71) and Faf du Plessis (58 not out) ensured the CSK a comfortable win against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi.

Despite getting jolted in the initial overs, Rayudu and du Plessis steadied the ship for Chennai, making the Mumbai bowlers work hard in the hot and humid conditions.

Murli Vijay and Shane Watson opened for against Mumbai but both failed to fire. The duo would try to leave the past behind when they face the Royals on Tuesday. Moreover, Sam Curran, who was promoted by Dhoni ahead of himself, didn’t disappoint his team after playing a cameo of 18 runs off six balls.

While the CSK’s batting looks quite settled, their bowlers too didn’t disappoint. After initial onslaught by MI opener Quinton de Kock, SaurabhTiwary and skipper Rohit Sharma, they made a comeback in the game and struck their opponents at regular intervals.

The Chennai bowlers ensured their arch-rivals didn’t put up a big total and that played a crucial role in Chennai’s five-wicket win. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla may not be considered as a vital cog in the CSK side, However, the 31-year-old bowler bought all his past experience into play and utilised the conditions quite effectively as he ended with a appreciable figures in his allotted quota of overs.

Similarly, Lungi Ngidi, Ravindra Jadeja, and Deepak Chahar also stepped it up when it mattered for Chennai. But the team management would certainly hope that the trio don’t leak many runs like in the previous game.

On the other hand, barring the inaugural season in 2008, Royals are yet to take the trophy home, despite having some quality players in almost every season.

Eyeing a decent outing this time, the Royals management has signed T20 specialists, both from the Indian domestic circuit and abroad. With the experienced players like Robin Uthappa, Shreyas Gopal and Varun Aaron, and youngsters like Yashaswi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Kartik Tyagi, the Royals have tried to form a perfect blend.

Moreover, with star all-rounder like Ben Stokes and skipper Smith, the Royals boast some high quality cricketers. While Stokes is undoubtedly one of the best all-rounders of the modern day cricket, Smith has shown his leadership quality in almost every format.

Royals will also hope the opener Jos Buttler replicates his 2019 form when he amassed 311 runs from just eight matches. The Englishman is expected to give explosive starts and if he gets equal support from Sanju Samson, Royals could either overhaul targets or set some massive ones.

The major cause of concern for the Royals’ team management will be the absence of Stokes, who is currently in New Zealand with his ailing father and his arrival is still undecided. The team will bank heavily on Stokes and the sooner he joins the team, the better it will be for them.

With, Jofra Archer, Jaydev Unadkat, Varun Aaron, Ankit Rajpoot, Rahul Tewatia, Mayank Markande, Oshane Thomas, and Andrew Tye, Royals also have a lot to offer on the bowling front. However, it will depend on how fast they adapt to the hot and sultry conditions here.

Going by the past encounters between the two teams, the CSK unquestionably hold an edge over the Royals as they have emerged victorious 14 times from 21 games while the Jaipur-based franchise has won the remaining clashes. But Tuesday will a new chapter and it could be anybody’s game.

Dubai: Devdutt Padikkal displayed his highly rated talent with a half-century on IPL debut before AB de Villiers provided the much needed final flourish to take Royal Challengers Bangalore to 163 for five in their tournament opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday.

The class and calmness Padikkal (56 off 42, 8 fours) showed in his first high-profile game was remarkable, so much so that Australian limited overs captain Aaron Finch (29 off 27) was happy to play second fiddle at the other end.

Sunrisers pulled things back in the middle overs following a 90-run opening stand between Padikkal and Finch. De Villiers (51 off 30) came up with crucial boundary hits towards the end to take the team score past 160.

The 20-year-old Padikkal, possessing a near perfect balance in the crease, played all around the ground, playing the pull and aerial cover drive with equal confidence.

Padikkal got going with three boundaries in an over off left-arm pacer T Natarajan. The left-handed opener brought up his half-century with a slog sweep over the fielder at deep square leg.

With the openers looking good, RCB cruised to 86 for no loss in 10 overs. However, both Padikkal and Finch fell off successive balls and that put the brakes on the scoring rate with RCB collecting only 30 runs from the next five overs.

Skipper Virat Kohli departed after scoring 14 off 13, leaving de Villiers to provide the final flourish. The South African star delivered once again, smashing his 200th six for RCB in the process.

There was also an injury scare for Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who limped off the field with an ankle injury after bowling four balls in his debut game for the Sunrisers.

Dubai: After finishing fourth in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) will start their present campaign with a game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who are looking for their maiden title, at the iconic Dubai International Cricket stadium here on Monday.

While SRH have clinched the trophy once in 2016, besides the 2009 triumph in their earlier avatar as Deccan Chargers, the Virat Kohli-led RCB are yet to lay their hands on the coveted trophy.

For this year’s edition of the lucrative league, the David Warner-led SRH have made a few changes in their squad. The ‘Orange Army’ will miss the services of ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who was released by the franchise after being banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for failing to report the approach of bookies elsewhere.

With skipper Warner and Jonny Bairstow, the SRH are considered to have one of the best opening pairs and if the duo gets going, the Hyderabad franchise will pose a big threat for their opponents.

Warner is also the leading run scorer for SRH after accumulating 3,271 runs from 71 games, averaging 55.44. Bairstow, who joined SRH last year, also impressed everyone after gathering 445 runs from 10 games at a decent average of 55.62.

The pace attack will be led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who hasn’t played any professional game since December 2019. The 30-year-old has 109 wickets from 86 games and is the leading wicket-taker for SRH. Bhuvneshwar, however, will need support from Khaleel Ahmed, Sandeep Sharma, Basil Thampi and Siddarth Kaul.

If SRH want to replicate their 2016 show, a lot will depend on how their spinners perform in the low and slow tracks in the UAE.

The spin attack will be led by Afghanistan leggie Rashid Khan and will be supported by his compatriot Mohammad Nabi, who had a decent outing in he just concluded Caribbean Premier League. Nabi picked 12 wickets from as many games with an economy rate of 5.10.

Other than these two, SRH also have left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem in their ranks and the Jharkhand spinner is known to be very accurate with his line and length.

Warner’s side also has spin-bowling all-rounders in Fabian Allen, Sanjay Yadav, Abdul Samad, and Abhishek Sharma.

On the other hand, RCB is one of the three teams in the league who are yet to win the trophy.

Kohli-led RCB’s biggest strength has been their batting and the skipper is undoubtedly, one of the best in business when it comes to white-ball cricket. The team management along with Kohli will hope that he replicates the form he had shown in the 2016 edition where he had scored four centuries.

Alongside Kohli, the RCB also have one of the best explosive T20 batsmen in AB de Villiers. The RCB’s batting mostly revolves around Kohli and de Villiers and if the duo fires, things will be easier for the team. Moreover, they both have also shown over the past how to be a livewire in the ground when it comes to fielding.

Also with the inclusion of Aaron Finch, the RCB’s top-order looks quite effective.

Youngster Devdutt Padikkal is likely to open the innings with Finch while Joshua Phillipe is the other opening option for the RCB.

Also, all-rounder Chris Morris has been a great addition to the side and will play the role of the explosive finisher that the RCB always looked for.

The RCB franchise has acquired the services of Morris and Isuru Udana to overcome their weaknesses at ‘death’ bowling.

In the middle-order, the RCB has some quality with the likes of Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube and Morris, who all have the ability to demolish any bowling attack.

Experienced South African pacer Dale Steyn will lead the charge of the pace bowling attack while Navdeep Saini, Isuru Udana, Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav will look to hand equal support to the lethal pacer.

Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal, , Pawan Negi, Adam Zampa and Washington Sundar whosoever gets a chance in the playing XI, are the spin bowling options for skipper Kohli and looking at the nature of wicket in the UAE, they all need to step up if the RCB wantsto march ahead in the league.

Overall, SRH looks slightly better than their opponents for the Monday game but with the change in venues and conditions, it could be anybody’s game in Dubai

Dubai: A brilliant half-century from debutant Devdutt Padikkal followed by some class spin bowling from Yujvendra Chahal helped Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 10 runs in their opening game of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here on Monday evening.

The RCB first posted 163/5 in their allotted 20 overs and then defended the total by causing a sensational batting collapse at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Chasing 164, the SRH didn’t have the best of starts to their chase as they lost skipper David Warner (6), who was run out. Manish Pandey, who came in next, stitched a 71-run partnership with opener Jonny Bairstow. However, just when things seemed to be sailing smoothly for the SRH, Pandey got out while trying to hit a maximum against Yujvendra Chahal after scoring 34 runs.

Priyam Garg, making his IPL debut, then joined forces with Bairstow who kept on smashing boundaries at will and scored 61 runs off just 43 balls before he was bowled by Chahal in the 16th over. Vijay Shankar, the next batsman, went back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers as he was undone by a beautiful Chahal googly.

The SRH then lost two quick wickets and their chase went off the track. Right-arm pacer Navdeep Saini picked two wickets in his final over and sealed the win for Kohli & Co. The SRH got bundled out for 153, falling short of the target by 10 runs.

Earlier, put into bat, the RCB had posted 163/4 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on half-centuries from Padikkal and AB de Villiers. Padikkal, who opened the innings for the RCB, scored 56 runs off 42 balls, with the help of eight fours. de Villiers, on the other hand, played a 51-run knock which came of just 30 deliveries.

The RCB will next play the Kings XI Punjab on Thursday while the SRH will lock horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday.

Brief scores: RCB 163/5 in 20 overs (Devdutt Padikkal 56, AB de Villiers 51; Abhishek Sharma 2/16) beat SRH 153 all out in 19.4 overs (Jonny Bairstow 61, Manish Pandey 34; Yujvendra Chahal 3/18) by 10 runs.

Dubai: ICC’s new Eite Panel entrant Nitin Menon’s howler may have cost Kings XI Punjab their first IPL game of the season against Delhi Capitals, decided through Super Over.

While both teams were tied at 157 for 8, it was Kagiso Rabada, who bowled a brilliant Super Over to clinch it for Capitals.

Before the match went into Super Over, TV footage showed that square leg umpire Menon had called a “run short” when Chris Jordan took a couple of runs off Rabada in the 19th over while playing towards long-on area.

The TV replays showed that Jordan legally completed the first run and the bat was inside the crease. However to KXIP’s horror, Jordan was declared a “short run” which means he didn’t enter his bat inside the crease which wasn’t the case.

If that run would have been allowed, it would have meant that KXI would have won the match inside the 20 overs.

Former India captain Virender Sehwag and his opening partner Aakash Chopra lashed out at Menon

“I don’t agree with the man of the match choice. The umpire who gave this short run should have been man of the match. Short Run nahin tha. And that was the difference,” Sehwag tweeted.

Chopra and former Delhi Daredevils coach Trent Woodhill also criticised the umpiring and that technology wasn’t used.

“One short that wasn’t. Technology must take over in these cases…..but that’s possible if only the third umpire spotted it in time. What if #KXIP don’t make it to the final four by 2 points?? Tight,” Chopra wondered aloud.

KXIP can appeal to the IPL Governing Council for a change in decision.

Dubai: A brilliant all-round effort from Marcus Stoinis along with sharp bowling from Kagiso Rabada in the Super Over helped Delhi Capitals beat Kings XI Punjab at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

Both sides ended their respective 20 overs on 157/8 after which KXIP managed to score just two runs batting first in the Super Over.

DC took three balls to go past that total and get off to a winning start in the season.

Stoinis was the star of the day for DC as he picked two wickets off the last two balls of the match before which he smashed 53 off 21 balls to take an otherwise struggling DC past the 150-run mark.

KXIP were tottering at 55/5 at the start of the 11th over of the match after which opener Mayank Agarwal turned things around for them. Mayank scored a masterful 89 off 60 balls and his innings turned the tables to the extent that KXIP needed one run to win off the last three balls. But, he holed out at sweeper cover off the penultimate ball before Chris Jordan hit it straight to square leg.

Earlier, DC were on 127/7 at the end of the penultimate over of the innings at the Dubai International Stadium after which Stoinis smashed 26 runs off Chris Jordan in the final over. Additionally, the over included a wide and a dramatic final ball in which Stoinis was run out after taking a run but Jordan had overstepped. Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada ran two runs off the free-hit to make 30 runs off the over.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 157/8 (Marcus Stoinis 53, Shreyas Iyer 39; Mohammed Shami 3/15) beat Kings XI Punjab 157/8 (Mayank Agarwal 89, KL Rahul 21; R Ashwin 2/2, Rabada 2/28) in Super Over

New Delhi: Batting great Sachin Tendulkar has no doubts as to which team he is supporting this season in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Tendulkar, who captained the Mumbai Indians from the inaugural season in 2008 till 2011, said that he favours the reigning champions to defend the title while adding that all teams in the tournament are on equal footing.

“Of course, the Men in Blue, are there any doubts? I’ve always been in blue everywhere. When Mumbai and Indians come together then it becomes Mumbai Indians,” Tendulkar told Aakash Chopra on the latter’s Youtube channel.

“All teams are quite balanced. This format is such that by the time you play, a lot has already transpired on the field. We can look at this in two ways. Batsmen who seem to be in a hurry are cautioned to take it easy, while those who are extremely relaxed at times are required to take swift actions. It is going to be an exciting competition, and matches will be evenly contested. Considering the 53-day duration of the tournament, the team with momentum on its side might prevail.”

Tendulkar also spoke about the importance of starting well. However, Mumbai Indians’ run of defeats in their opening matches in the IPL continued on Saturday when they were beaten by Chennai Super Kings in Abu Dhabi.

“Even while playing a Test series, we stress on performing well in the first game. If we play well in the first game, the series will finish well. Same applies here as well. If the beginning is good, the team meetings are also short, and that holds the team in good stead,” said the 47-year-old.

Abu Dhabi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s astute captaincy was backed up by some brilliant bowling at the back end as Chennai Super Kings restricted Mumbai Indians to 162 for nine in the opening IPL game here on Saturday.

CSK’s new recruits — leg-spinner Piyush Chawla (1/21 in 4 overs) and left-arm seamer Sam Curran (1/28 in 4 overs) — made a fantastic first impression while Lungi Ngidi (3/38 in 4 overs) and Deepak Chahar (2/32 in 4 overs) came back brilliantly at the death overs.

For Mumbai Indians, Quinton de Kock (33 off 20 balls, 5×4) and Saurabh Tiwary (42 off 31 balls, 3×4, 1×6) played well, but couldn’t convert their starts as the defending champions got only 76 runs in their back-10.

De Kock started in a blazing fashion and launched straight into Chahar and Ngidi as 45 came off the first four overs.

The shrewd Dhoni then introduced Chawla into the attack and he right away dismissed Rohit Sharma (12) who always have had a problem with wrist spinners. It was a straight delivery that Rohit was trying to hit inside out but couldn’t get past Curran at the mid-off circle.

The seamer was back in action as he got rid of De Kock with a well disguised off-cutter, which the batman hit straight to Shane Watson at mid-wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav (17) and Tiwary added 44 to steady the ship but some good outfielding in the back-10 from the likes of Curran and Faf du Plessis had MI struggling at 124 for five from 92 for two.

As an anchor, Tiwary proved to be a decent choice as he hit the first six off this year’s IPL, off Ravindra Jadeja. Someone who promised a lot was Hardik Pandya (14 off 10 balls), with a couple of lusty sixes off Jadeja, but then Chawla bowled an ideal length to keep him quiet.

Jadeja was rewarded when Hardik tried to hit a third six instead of rotating the strike and was caught at the boundary by Du Plessis.

Abu Dhabi: Staying in self-isolation for the first six days after spending five months with family was the hardest phase, according to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who spoke for the first time in months ahead of the IPL opener against Mumbai Indians.

In the run-up to 13th IPL, Chennai Super Kings were rocked by 13 COVID-19 cases, including two players, and pullouts by the senior duo of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh due to personal reasons.

As per the protocols, teams had to quarantine for six days in Dubai and 14-days in Abu Dhabi.

However, CSK had to stretch their self-isolation period to September 1 due to positive cases in the camp including players Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“First six days in quarantine is very difficult. You are with your family and suddenly you have to stay in a separate room… felt each individual used that time well and nobody was disappointed or frustrated,” the former India skipper said after winning the toss.

“After the first 14 days it was nice to get out. The practice facilities were very good.”

Back in action after a long gap, Dhoni, who had retired from international cricket a little over a month ago, said he worked on his fitness during the coronavirus-induced lockdown in India.

His bulging biceps were there for everyone to see.

“Have the liberty during lockdown to spend time on yourself to keep fit. Have to applaud every member of the squad for utilising the time well.”

Chennai had lost the finals to Mumbai Indians in the last edition.

Asked if revenge is on his mind, Dhoni said: “Being a gentleman’s game you don’t think about revenge (against MI). You think about the mistakes you made.”

Four-time champions Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said adapting to the conditions in UAE will be the key.

“We have been here for few weeks, so understand conditions better. Before coming here, we had a camp in Mumbai. Also had quality practice out here in Abu Dhabi. Key here will be to understand conditions,” he said.

“Pitches for the practice matches will be similar to what we’ll get here. so ready to go.”

The last time the IPL was held in UAE, Mumbai Indians had returned home empty handed.

Asked if it plays on the mind in any way, Rohit said: “We just have two members from that squad, so it is a new set up now. The way we’ve been playing cricket for the last couple of years, it has been good. All in all we’ve had good preparation. Now all about execution.”

The 13th IPL was shifted to UAE due to rising COVID-19 cases in India. The 53-day tournament, which will be held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, will conclude on November 10.
