IPL 2021: Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi Lead KKR To 187/6 Against SRH

Chennai: Nitish Rana (80) and Rahul Tripathi (53) and a late surge from Dinesh Karthik (22) helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) score 187/6 against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

KKR looked set for a total above 200 but SRH’s Afghanistan duo Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi led the way as the 2016 champions took five wickets in the last five overs.

SRH took five wickets in the last five overs and conceded just 42 runs but could only restrict Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to 187/6 in the IPL at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

KKR looked set for a total well above the 200-run mark when their top order batsmen Nitish Rana (80), Rahul Tripathi (53) and Shubman Gill (15) took on the SRH bowlers. However, SRH’s Afghanistan duo Rashid Khan (2/24) and Mohammad Nabi (2/32) led the way in the death overs.

Rana and Gill put up a 53-run opening partnership off 42 balls before the latter fell to Rashid. However, Rahul Tripathi then came in and scored a belligerent 53 off 29 balls, smashing five fours and two sixes. Tripathi put up 93 runs off just 50 balls for the second wicket with Rana.

Tripathi eventually fell to T Natarajan and with the team cruising at 146/2 in the 16th over, KKR sent in Andre Russell ahead of Shakib Al Hasan. However, Russell ended up falling for just five runs off as many balls to Rashid after which Nabi dismissed Rana and KKR captain Eoin Morgan off consecutive deliveries in the 18th over.

Dinesh Karthik then scored 22 runs off nine balls to get KKR close to the 190-run mark while Shakib fell to Bhuvneshwar Kumar off the last ball of the innings.

Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 187/6 in 20 overs (Nitish Rana 80, Rahul Tripathi 53; Rashid Khan 2/24) vs SunRisers Hyderabad

CSK Skipper Dhoni Fined Rs 12 Lakh For Slow Over-Rate

Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was on Sunday fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate in the match against Delhi Capital (DC), which the three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions lost by seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.

A media advisory issued by the IPL on Sunday said, “Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 10.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh.”

In a match, which was termed a clash between two skippers at opposite ends of the captaincy spectrum — it was Rishabh Pant’s maiden outing as DC skipper, while Dhoni has been CSK skipper for ages, besides captaining India in all three formats of the game — the Delhi franchise made CSK pay for their lapses on the field and poor bowling, winning their opening contest with eight balls to spare.

Chasing 188 for 7, DC’s Prithvi Shaw (72 off 38 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (85 off 54 balls) put on a 138-run opening-wicket partnership in 13.3 overs that saw their side make a mockery of the challenging 189-run target set by CSK.

IPL 2021: Shaw, Dhawan Power DC To Crushing Win Over CSK

Mumbai: Delhi Capitals (DC) made Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pay dearly for their lapses in field and poor bowling, as the duel between the master and the apprentice turned out to be a damp squib with apprentice Rishabh Pant’s DC thrashing master M.S. Dhoni’s CSK by seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.

Prithvi Shaw (72 off 38 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (85 off 54 balls) put on a 138-run opening-wicket partnership in 13.3 overs that saw their side make a mockery of the challenging 189-run target set by CSK. DC chased the target in 18.4 overs.

The two teams were playing their first match of the IPL 2021 season and it was clear that CSK, who have quite a few ageing players, were rusty.

Shaw got two lives as he was dropped on 38 and 47 off the bowling of Moeen Ali.

Barring those two chances, the Mumbai batsman, opening for DC, was imperious as he hit three sixes and nine fours in his 38-ball knock.

Dhawan, at the other end, too played his shots as none of the CSK bowlers were allowed to settle down.

India’s star performer in limited-overs cricket in recent times, Shardul Thakur, was taken for 17 runs in his first over while left-arm pace bowler Sam Curran went for the same number of runs in his opening over.

By the time DC reached the 10-over mark, they were already 99 without loss with Shaw past his half-century and Dhawan nearing his.

Shaw hammered a long-hop outside off to the mid-wicket boundary to reach his half-century in 27 balls.

CSK skipper Dhoni was completely lost for ideas as none of his bowlers could provide a breakthrough till the 14th over when Shaw was eventually caught in the deep.

By the time Dhawan was out as the second wicket, with the score on 167, DC needed just 22 in 21 balls.

Earlier, Sam Curran hammered 34 off 15 balls at the back-end of CSK innings, including thrashing his elder brother Tom Curran for 16 runs in three balls in the 19th over, to help the Men in Yellow reach 188/7 in their 20 overs.

The CSK innings was a roller-coaster as they began by losing two early wickets against a DC pace attack that missed the services of acclaimed internationals Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje (under quarantine), Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma (injury).

Faf du Plessis was out leg-before to pace bowler Avesh Khan while Ruturaj Gaikwad was caught in slips off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

Ali (36 off 24 balls) and Suresh Raina (54 off 36 balls) then resurrected the innings with a 53-run partnership for the third wicket with the former going after Ravichandran Ashwin, hitting him for two successive sixes. However, Ashwin got the England left-hander out on the third ball as he went for a reverse sweep and was caught in the deep.

Raina then added 63 runs for the fourth wicket with Ambati Rayudu (23 off 16 balls) but a few quick wickets set CSK back. Rayudu was caught at long-off off Tom Curran. Soon, the 16th over, bowled by Avesh, saw two important wickets.

Raina was run out following a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja (26 not out off 17 balls) while skipper MS Dhoni was bowled by Avesh as he tried to pull him to the mid-wicket fence but instead dragged the ball onto his stumps.

At 143/6 after 16 overs, getting close to 190 seemed distant if not impossible. However, Curran and Jadeja took 23 runs off Tom Curran’s fourth over, the innings’ 19th, to help CSK get to a big total which didn’t prove to be enough in the end.

Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 188/7 in 20 overs (S Raina 54, M Ali 36, S Curran 34, R Jadeja 26 not out, C Woakes 2/18, A Khan 2/23) lost to Delhi Capitals 190/3 in 18.4 overs (S Dhawan 85, P Shaw 72, S Thakur 2/53) by seven wickets.

RCB Pull Off Last Ball Thriller Against MI In IPL Opene

Chennai: Seamer Harshal Patel’s five-wicket haul (5/27) helped Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by two wickets in a last ball thriller in the opening match of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) season at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday.

Patel ran through MI’s middle and lower order to restrict them to 159/9 after they were cruising at 86/1 midway through their innings.

RCB were then powered by a 27-ball 48 from AB de Villiers and a 28-ball 39 from Glenn Maxwell even as they made heavy weather of the chase, winning it off the last ball of the match even though they had been set up well by a 52-run third-wicket stand between skipper Virat Kohli (33 off 29) and Maxwell.

Earlier, after MI looked set for a big total halfway through their innings, RCB pulled back by getting rid of Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 23) and Chris Lynn (49 off 35) in quick succession.

Patel, the right-arm pacer who plays for Haryana in domestic cricket, then ran through the middle-order. He got rid of dangerous hitters Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya, besides dismissing tail-ender Marco Jansen to put the brakes on a strong MI batting line-up.

MI batsman Yadav looked set for a big score, but RCB’s new recruit Kyle Jamieson forced an edge off his bat that was neatly collected by de Villiers behind the stumps.

Washington Sundar then caught Lynn off his own bowling, as he looked to go for a big hit but instead lobbed it high in the air, as MI slid to 105/3 in 12.5 overs. There were still 43 balls left and MI had their power-hitters in the dugout. However, Patel got into the act and ran through the middle and lower order.

He deceived Hardik Pandya with a slow full toss, got Ishan Kishan with a yorker, had Krunal Pandya caught at deep mid-wicket and then also had Kieron Pollard caught in the deep. He then bowled IPL debutant South African Marco Jansen to complete a fifer.

RCB got off to a flier — scoring 36 runs in just four overs — before two quick wickets of opener Washington Sundar and newcomer Rajat Patidar pegged them back.

Kohli and Maxwell then took their team to safety but four wickets for 24 runs in the space of four overs saw them struggling at 122/6 in the 17th over. De Villiers then went after the bowling to take them close before he was run out. MI sensed a chance but with just two needed off two balls, they had left it too late.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 159/9 in 20 overs (C Lynn 49, S Yadav 31, I Kishan 28, H Patel 5/27) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore 160/8 in 20 overs (AB de Villiers 48, G Maxwell 39, V Kohli 33, J Bumrah 2/26, M Jansen 2/28).

Chess And Snakes & Ladders: Know How India Invented Two Of The Most Popular Games

Around 1500 years of its known existence, chess has been seen as a metaphor for human relations, an instrument of military strategy, and a criterion for genius minds as chess has evolved over time.

From Where The Game Chess Came

The earliest known records of chess have been registered from the 7th century, but many believe that the origin lies in the 6th century when the youngest prince of the Gupta Empire was killed in a battle.

And his younger brother derived a way of telling the scene to his mother as to how her elder brother was surrounded by the enemy and was killed on the battlefield.

The younger brother used an 8×8 Ashtapada board which was then used for other past times to explain the whole episode to the mother. From there a new game emerged with two key characteristics which were different rules for moving different types of pieces and a single king piece whose fate decided the outcome of the game.

Origin Of The Name CHESS

This game was originally known as CHATURANGA, a Sanskrit word for ‘four divisions’. As the game moved to the Persian empire, it acquired its modern name CHESS, derived from ‘shah’ which means king, and ‘checkmate’ from ‘shah mat’ or the king is helpless.

Trade through the silk road carried the game to east and southeast Asia. Where China, Arab, Japan, and many regions developed their local variants of chess.

How Chess Took Its Modern Form

But it was in 1000 AD when Chess began to take its modern form in Europe. The game was included in the education system and soon was a symbol for different social classes.

It was in the 15th century when the game fused into the modern form that we see today. This century was an important turn of events in the history of chess.

The introduction of the powerful queen happened and it affected the style of play in a great manner. The game pace was accelerated and while analyzing the game common openings that we today call Gambits and endgames appeared. From this point, the chess theory was born.

Modern Chess Board and Pieces

Modern chess is played on an 8×8 board with 32 white boxes and 32 black boxes arranged alternatively. It has 8 pieces of Pawn, 2 each of Rook, Bishop, and Knight. It has one piece each of a queen and the King for black as well as white.

Man vs Machine In Chess History

With more understanding of the chess, the nature of the game became to change as mathematical and algorithm approach was being used for the chess theory.

Computers began to compete with humans in the late 1960s but were not very effective. In the late 19th century an IBM computer named deep blue ended the dominance of Soviet players. In 1997, Deep blue’s win over Garry Kasparov was the first incident where a machine defeated a sitting world champion.

Today the chess software has developed so much that the best human players are unable to challenge them, thus making the computers invincible.

History Of Snakes & Ladders

This game has a great impact on Indian children, we all have played ‘Saanp Seedi’, and history shows that when the game was invented it was for a very different reason.

The early Snakes & Ladders game in ancient India was originated as Mokshapat or Moksha Patamu. In simple words, the game can be defined as the ladder to Moksha. According to some historians, Swami Gyandev invented the game in the 13th century AD.

The game was initially invented to teach children about morality and about karma and kama which means destiny and desire. According to information, the game initially had more snakes and fewer ladders as it was believed that the path to goodness is hard to achieve and one can go on the evil path easily.

Boxes used to have different symbols in the early Snakes & ladders game

The game used to have boxes with symbols that symbolize evil and virtue. Some of the virtue boxes were faith, reliability, generosity, knowledge, and asceticism.

Nethra-Kumanan

Chennai: By the time she was 12, Nethra Kumanan had tried her hand at tennis, cycling, basketball and even some Bharatnatyam but it was in sailing that she found her true calling in life, a choice she justified by becoming the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics.

The Chennai-based 23-year-old spoke to PTI from Oman, where she made the cut for Tokyo in the laser radial class at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers.

She first made a mark with a bronze medal in the World Cup last year after having competed in the Asian Games in 2014 and 2018.

“I tried my hand at tennis, basketball, cycling, art and I also trained in Bharatanatyam also which I had to give up for sailing. My mother put me in a summer camp for one year which is something I’ve done every year growing up so this is the one that stuck!” Nethra said, looking back at how it all began, in an interaction from Mussanah in Oman.

Nethra said she had been working hard for the one and a half years staying away from home and it had paid off.

“I’ve been working hard for this for the past 18 months and away from home for a long time…and it is good to know that it all paid off and the event is done and we’ve got what we came for,” she said.

Nethra has been training with Hungarian coach Tamas Eszes, a two-time Olympian, and she said they had been focussed on dealing with the stress of racing.

“We’ve been working (with each other) for more than a year…So we’ve worked on everything from learning to be a full-time athlete to learning to deal with the stress of racing.”

The soft-spoken second year engineering student at the SRM College here said she was stuck in Spain during the COVID-19 lockdown last year but used the time to good effect by training with international sailors.

“I got stuck in Spain due to the coronavirus lockdown. I was able to use the time once the lockdown was lifted by training with international athletes in Gran Canaria,” she said.

Having qualified for the Olympics, she is aware of the challenges that await her. She said Tokyo would be the first step towards being truly competitive at the 2024 Games in Paris.

“As these are my first Olympic games, I will try to do my best and it’s the first step to get ready to be able to compete with the top girls in Paris in 2024,” Nethra said.

Asked how she has managedto balance sailing with her engineering course, she said education going online during the lockdowns has been a boon for her.

“I’ve been lucky this year to have everything online… and they have been very understanding to help me when I needed time off,” she added.

Nethra said her parents, especially her father, who runs a software company, have been a great support.

“My parents are the reason where I am today… They support me emotionally, and financially. I can’t be more grateful. My father has backed me always, which is a great thing to have,” she said.

Meanwhile, her coach Eszes praised the Nethra and said she is a hard-working and determined.

“Nethra joined our team, Sailing Academy Gran Canaria in 2019, since then we organise her training programmes, and help her to find the best ways to support her performance.

“Definitely she is a hard working, determined, persistent and has great talent,” the Hungarian added.

About how the lockdown impacted her training, he said it was actually helpful.

“In March 2020, Nethra arrived at our training base for a one week, shortly after we were not allowed to leave our house till 60 days. We prepared one of the rooms as a gym, so she was able to train physically.

“Also we focused on nutrition and mental strength during this period. After 60 days we went back to the normal training schedule,” Eszes recalled.

Vishnu, Ganapathy-Varun Pair Qualify For Olympics; Unprecedented 4 Indian Sailors To Compete In Tokyo

New Delhi: In a historic first for India, four sailors from the country will compete at this year’s Olympics after Vishnu Saravanan and the pair of Ganapathy Chengappa and Varun Thakkar made the cut for Tokyo at the Asian Qualifiers in Oman on Thursday.

This was after Nethra Kumanan on Wednesday became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics in the laser radial event in the Mussanah Open Championship, which is an Asian Olympic qualifying event.

It is also the first time that India will compete in three sailing events in the Olympics.

So far, India had competed in only one event in all the earlier Olympics though two sailors represented the country on four occasions.

“Yes, history has been scripted. Four Indian sailors have qualified for Olympics to compete in three events. It’s the maximum number of sailors qualified and also in number of events,” Yachting Association of India joint secretary general Capt Jitendra Dixit told PTI.

Tomasz Januszewski, the Indian sailing coach, said it was a result of “years of hard work by sailors, their parents and coaches.

“Sincere congratulations to our champions for creating this historic day and taking Indian sailing to a whole new level,” he told PTI from Oman.

He also thanked the Sports Ministry, the Sports Authority of India and the Yachting Association of India for constant support.

“I personally hope that it is the start of a new era in Indian sailing. Sailors and the community behind them are amazing. It is time for them to become recognised and start shining, locally and internationally,” Januszewski added.

On Thursday, Saravanan was the first to qualify for the Tokyo Games in Laser Standard Class after finishing second in the overall standings.

Later, the duo of Chengappa and Thakkar finished on top of the points table in the 49er Class. The two had won a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

“I congratulate Indian athletes Nethra Kumanan, KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar who have qualified for Tokyo Olympic in sailing. I’m particularly proud of the quota of Nethra, who is India’s first-ever female sailor to qualify for the Olympics!” tweeted sports minister Kiren Rijiju.

Two sailors make a team in the 49er Class while laser class is a single sailor event.

Also, two sailors qualify for Tokyo Olympics from laser class events while only one team can do so in the 49er class.

Saravanan was third till the penultimate day on Wednesday but won the medal race on Thursday to jump to second place overall with 53 points and book a Tokyo Olympics quota.

“Our athletes are making a mark in all disciplines!” Rijiju said.

The Indian pipped Thailand’s Keerati Bualong (57 points), who was second till Wednesday, for the Tokyo Games spot.

Singapore’s Ryan Lo Jun Han (31 points) was first overall in the Laser Standard Class table.

“Till Wednesday, Vishnu was third behind the Thai sailor though both were on same points. Today in the medal race, Vishnu finished first and so naturally he ended above the Thai sailor in points table,” Dixit said.

“Two sailors qualify for Olympics in laser class and Vishnu finished second. The Singapore sailor was well above Vishnu before today and so Vishnu could not dislodge him (from top position).”

Kumanan finished sixth in the laser radial class medal race on Thursday but still ended at second overall with 30 points to confirm the Olympics spot.

Dutchwoman Emma Savelon (29 points), who finished fourth in the medal race on Thursday, topped the standings but she can’t be considered for the Asian qualifying spot.

Stephanie Norton of Hong Kong, who finished third overall, also qualified.

There have been four instances of two Indian sailors qualifying for the Olympics earlier but they took part in the same event.

The Indian pair of Farokh Tarapore and Dhruv Bhandari competed in the 470 class in the 1984 Olympics. Tarapore and Kelly Rao took part in the same event in the 1988 Games.

Tarapore — in his third Olympics — and Cyrus Cama took part in the same 470 class in the 1992 Barcelona Games before Malav Shroff and Sumeet Patel competed in 49er class skiff in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The biggest extravaganza of the cricketing world, World Cups aside, is upon us. For the avid IPL fans, who were on tenterhooks this time last year with the event shrouded in uncertainty thanks to the pandemic, a second IPL in 5 months has come as a windfall. Yes, it is that time of the year again.

THE LARGER PERSPECTIVE

When the country was struggling to smile amidst the novelty of the novel coronavirus, the news of the IPL happening, albeit a little later than usual, came as a whiff of fresh air. In the seven weeks of IPL 2020, even if momentarily, people started to come out of the mental bubble of the previous seven months. They were distracted from terms like RT-PCR, sanitiser, quarantine, isolation, lockdown, shutdown, night curfew et al which was much-needed.

While IPL 2020 gave the people something else to talk about apart from the pandemic, the 2021 edition could well show the path towards ‘living with the pandemic’. A lot of experts believe that COVID is not going anywhere soon and in such a scenario, it becomes paramount that we learn to live with it. The build-up to the IPL has somewhat been a glimpse of the world in the post COVID era.

Players and support staff tested positive, were isolated and some came back to the bubble after two back-to-back negative tests. Probably, that is how life is going to be. Try your best to take all precautionary measures, if it still hits you then take the remedial measures and come back for the battle.

THE GAME’S PERSPECTIVE

Philosophy aside, the cricketing aspect of IPL also holds a lot of significance. There are many questions that people are looking for answers to. Will this be Dhoni’s last IPL? If so, will he make it a memorable swan-song? Will it finally be “Ee sala cup namde” for RCB? Will the Pant-Ponting pair help Delhi go past the final hurdle? Will Rajasthan Royals’ bold decision to make a young Sanju Samson captain reap rewards? Will a change in names bring a change of fortunes for Punjab Kings?

Will the Sundars, the Natarajans, the Krunals, the Sirajs, the Axars, etc carry on with the momentum of their high-flying maiden season? How will the likes of Raina and Harbhajan react to the long hiatus? And finally, will Mumbai Indians score a hattrick?

MY STARTING ELEVENS

With the IPL starting tomorrow, I am sure all of you have read a lot of team previews and worked your heads around a lot of information. There can’t possibly be much to write that you have not read already. So instead of giving you more gyaan on what the teams’ SWOTs are, I am jumping into my preferred elevens for each side. Those in bold are the overseas players.

Mumbai Indians (MI):

Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar.

The top 6, maybe 7, is unshakeable. It is the bowlers that MI might want to play around with. If they wish to go with Piyush Chawla instead of Chahar, we might see Milne replacing Coulter-Nile because Chawla is a decent bet at 8.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB):

Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli (c), AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Azharuddeen, Rajat Patidar, Washington Sundar, Daniel Christian, Kyle Jamieson, Yuzvendra Chahal, Navdeep Saini.

Kohli’s team has always struggled with balance. The presence of the likes of Maxwell, Christian and Sams, and the form of Sundar might give them that this season. While the presence of both Patidar and Azharuddeen might make the middle order look a bit inexperienced, Maxwell and de Villiers will make up for it.

Tip: If Mohammed Azharuddeen gets enough chances, I will not be surprised if he ends up being the Emerging Player of the Tournament.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK):

Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Imran Tahir.

If the top order delivers, the team think tank might want to try Lungi Ngidi in place of Curran for a few games. The other toss-up could be between Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu. I was tempted to pick the latter, but with the top order jam-packed, Uthappa might fit better for the job of finishing.

Delhi Capitals (DC):

Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje.

Rahane becomes a must in the eleven in the absence of Iyer. However, given that coach Ponting has hinted at Smith getting a few chances in the top three, Rahane could bear the brunt as he might be wasted below number 3. In that case, Smith replaces Hetmyer and I would bring in the exciting Vishnu Vinod in place of Rahane.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH):

David Warner (c), Johnny Bairstow, Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson, Kedar Jadhav, Abdul Samad, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jagadeesha Suchith, Sandeep Sharma, T Natarajan.

Considering the opening duo of Saha and Warner which did well towards the end of last season, it would feel apt to continue with that but with Bairstow hitting white ball form against India recently, it will be difficult to leave him out. But again, Bairstow sitting out opens an overseas option which can be filled in by either Holder or Nabi in which case Saha comes in for Suchith. In the absence of a support spinner for Rashid, Nabi might get the nod ahead of Holder. SRH has some tough calls to make.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR):

Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Shakib-al-Hasan, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy.

With Sunil Narine neither getting runs nor picking up wickets in the last season, this could well be the season for Shakib who might finally be assured of a place in the eleven. As for the others, I don’t think KKR will tinker much. Prasidh, Nagarkoti and Mavi might be rotated around and they might throw in a game or two for Kuldeep Yadav and Pawan Negi. However, don’t be surprised if you see Sunil Narine coming in at the top with Gill at the expense of Shakib and the others dropping down a number.

Rajasthan Royals (RR):

Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Sanju Samson (c), David Miller, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia, Chris Morris, Shreyas Gopal, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, Kartik Tyagi.

The absence of Jofra Archer is going to be massive for RR. They might decide to go in with Mustafizur in his absence or even Andrew Tye but that would mean relying on far too many all-rounders and the English duo at the top. Thus, the presence of Miller or Livingstone will be better for them. Yet, if they decide to give Morris some support in the form of an extra overseas quickie, we might see Shivam Dube coming into the side at the expense of one of the Indian bowlers.

Punjab Kings (PK):

KL Rahul (c), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Prabhsimran Singh, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Deepak Hooda, Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi.

A big time Gayle fan, I would pick him in any eleven. However, in the recent past, he has not been a certain starter at least in the IPL. In that case, the apt replacement for him will be Fabian Allen or Moises Henriques to add an extra bowling option.

All said and done, teams in particular and IPL in general has the habit of throwing in a lot of
surprises. While the cricket analyst in me would want most of my predictions to come true, the fan in me would love a few to go wrong. Because, what is an IPL without a few big surprises?

Paris: The French Open has been postponed by a week due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) said in a statement on Thursday. The clay court Grand Slam will be held from May 30 to June 11, with the qualifying rounds scheduled for May 24 to 28.

The FFT said that the decision was made in response to France President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement last month that a scheduled to progressively get cultural and sporting events in the country back up and running would be set up from mid-May onwards, subject to the improvement of the health situation.

“Using this as their starting point, the FFT worked in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the relevant government services on potential scenarios for organising Roland-Garros, while taking the international sporting calendar into account,” said the FFT.

“In this context, it appeared that postponing the tournament by one week would be the best solution. Hence the qualifying rounds will be held from Monday 24 to Friday 28 May and will be followed by the main draw, from Sunday 30 May to Sunday 13 June,” it further said.

The FFT further said that limited number of fans will be allowed at the event.

New Delhi: Nethra Kumanan on Wednesday became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics after she was assured of a top-place finish in the laser radial event of the Asian Qualifiers in Oman.

The 23-year-old Kumanan has a 21-point advantage over her nearest rival, who also happens to be an Indian — Ramya Saravanan — in the Laser Radial Class event with one race to go on Thursday.

The Chennai-based Kumanan currently has 18 points while Saravanan has 39 on the penultimate day of competitions in Mussanah Open Championship, which is a joint Asian and African Olympic qualifying event.

In sailing, the athlete who has the least points wins the competition.

The final race on Thursday is a 20 pointer and Kumanan has already sealed it with one round to go. Laser Radial is a single handed boat, which means that it is sailed by only one person.

“Yes, Kumanan has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with one race to go on the final day on Thursday,” Asian Sailing Federation President Malav Shroff told PTI.

“The final race is a 20 pointer but the point gap with her nearest Asian rival, also an Indian, is more than 20,” said Shroff who himself represented India in Olympic sailing event in the 2004 Athens Games.

Dutchwoman Emma Charlotte Jeanne Savelon are currently in second spot, above Saravanan, with just a three-point difference with Kumanan but she is nowhere in the scene for Olympics qualification from this event as this is an Asian Qualifier.

Shroff said the event in Oman is being held under the aegis of Asian Sailing Federation.

Kumanan will be the 10th Indian to qualify for a sailing event in the Olympics, but all the earlier nine have been male athletes.

Nachhatar Singh Johal (2008), Shroff and Sumeet Patel (2004), F Tarapore and Cyrus Cama (1992), Kelly Rao (1988), Dhruv Bhandari (1984), Soli Contractor and A A Basith (1972).

Shroff said Kumanan is the only Indian so far to have booked a direct quota place by topping a qualifier while all the earlier nine Olympians made it by getting quotas that could not be filled up.

“All nine of us were nominated. I was in the 21st rank and only 20 were to compete in the Olympics in my event. Somebody dropped out and so I got it because I was first in the waiting list.

“She is the first Indian, male or female, to qualify directly by booking a quota place in a qualifier.”

He also said that two other Indians are still in the fray for Tokyo Olympics qualification on the last day on Thursday.

One of them is Ganapathy Kelapanda Chengappa who is on top of the 49er Class table on the penultimate day.

T20 World Cup

New Delhi: ICC’s interim CEO Geoff Allardice on Wednesday said the body has backup plans in place for the T20 World Cup in India later this year but is currently not entertaining any thoughts of moving it out of the country despite a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The tournament is scheduled to be held in October-November in India, which is reporting over one lakh daily cases for the past few days. Amid the COVID surge, the IPL is due to start on Friday in Chennai behind closed doors.

“We are certainly proceeding on the assumption that the event is going ahead as planned,” Allardice said during a virtual media round-table.

“Plan B we have, but we haven’t activated those plans yet. We are working with the BCCI, we do have backup plans that can be activated if the time comes.

“We’re not oblivious to what is going on around the world and we continue to take updates on all aspects of how sporting events are being run and the situation in each country.

“Cricket is being played in a number of countries around the world, we’re taking lessons from all of those and proceeding as planned.

“We do have back-up plans that can be activated when the time is right. We’re not anywhere near that timeline yet. We’ve got a number of months to be able to see how the situation is and how cricket events are being run.”

Allardice, ICC’s general manger – cricket, was recently made the interim CEO after Manu Sawhney was sent on “leave” after his conduct came under the scanner during an internal investigation by UK-based audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The 53-year-old Australian, who has played domestic cricket in his country, said the ICC is also in touch with other sports bodies to understand how they are managing in the COVID era.

“Cricket is being played in a number of countries at the moment and we are learning from all of them.

“We have been talking to others sports bodies about what they are doing, we are in a reasonably good shape at the moment but acknowledge that the world is changing at a rapid rate.

“We have also got the World Test Championship final coming up in two months’ time, but we are proceeding with both as planned,” he said.

The UAE, which hosted the IPL last year, could be one of the backup venues for the shortest format’s biggest international event should the situation demand a shift.

During the interaction, he was also asked about the Decision Review System (DRS), of which the contentious Umpire’s Call is a part, something that was dubbed confusing by India captain Virat Kohli during the limited overs engagements against England.

Allardice said there was “a good discussion” on DRS during the recent ICC Board Meeting.

“DRS was designed to overturn the clear errors. There has been no wholesale changes in it.

“I think more and more when you see a replay, the natural reaction is what can we do…Overruling a clear error… We have got to a point where we are using technology to get correct decisions but striving for perfection becomes impossible.

“We are very comfortable with where we are at the moment,” he said.

Allardice acknowledged the challenges countries are facing in order to host cricket matches and tournaments in terms of maintaining communication with their respective governments.

He is of the opinion that players must get vaccinated whenever possible and that is also the ICC’s recommendation, though it falls outside the apex cricket body’s ambit.

“I think our medical committee and the board are recommending that participants should be vaccinated wherever possible,” he said.

“But the dynamics in each country will be different with the supply of the vaccine and the availability of vaccinations and where sports people or international sports people might be in the queue.

“The ICC wouldn’t be able to influence that at a national level but our overall message has been that we recommend participants coming to our events in future are vaccinated wherever possible.”

Allardice also admitted that COVID-19 has affected the women’s game.

When asked if the pandemic has pushed back women’s cricket just at a time when it was gaining momentum following the roaring success of the last T20 World Cup in Australia, he said, “Last 3-4 years the momentum we built around international cricket is fantastic. The final (between India and Australia) (at a packed) MCG was a special moment.

“Then COVID hit and made life very difficult to reestablish it. That will be the focus in the next 12 months.”

Lausanne: Football’s world governing body FIFA on Wednesday suspended the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) with immediate effect due to third-party interference. It also banned the Chadian Football Association (FTFA) due to government interference.

FIFA issued a statement on its website stating, “The situation was prompted by the recent hostile takeover of the PFF headquarters in Lahore by a group of protestors and an alleged decision by certain individuals to remove the FIFA-appointed normalisation committee of the PFF led by Haroon Malik and to hand over the leadership of the PFF to Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah.”

The PFF office was attacked on March 27 this year and people inside held hostage by its former president, Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah, and his group.

The world governing body added that a warning letter had been issued before the action was taken.

FIFA said its order would only be revoked if full control of the PFF is given back to Haroon Malik.

“This suspension will only be lifted once FIFA has received confirmation from the normalisation committee of the PFF that PFF’s premises, accounts, administration and communication channels are again under its full control and it can continue to carry out its mandate without further hindrance.”

The Chadian Football Association (FTFA) suspension was prompted by the recent decisions of Chadian government authorities to permanently withdraw the powers delegated to the FTFA, establish a national committee for the temporary management of football and seize control of the FTFA premises.

New Delhi: A 16-member Indian judo team has been forced to withdraw from the ongoing Asia-Oceania Olympic qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan after a player tested positive for coronavirus just before the start of the tournament.

The judoka tested positive after landing in Kyrgyzstan.

“Yes, one player of the team tested positive upon landing in Bishkek just a before the official weighing on April 5, forcing the entire squad to withdraw as per the guidelines of International Judo Federation,” a source in the Judo Federation of India (JFI) told PTI.

“The team comprised 12 judokas and four coaches.”

The Asia-Oceania Championships in Bishkek started on Tuesday and will end on Saturday.

Prominent judokas in the team included Shushila Devi (women’s 48kg), Jasleen Singh Saini (men’s 66kg), Tulika Mann (women’s 78kg) and Avtar Singh (men’s 100kg). All the four are in the race for one continental quota place.

“The entire contingent is in isolation for 14 days in Bishkek now,” said the source.

He blamed the JFI mismanagement for the fiasco, stating that the federation jeopardised country’s chances by allowing the entire contingent to travel together.

“The entire squad including 4 coaches travelled together for Bishkek which could have been avoided. Since the entire team travelled together and one player came out positive on arrival, it put paid to the hopes of other players. This could have been avoided.”

Seoul: North Korea does not plan to take part in this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a media report.

Pyongyang’s Olympic Committee made the decision on March 25, according to the website Sport in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which reports on sports in North Korea, according to DPA news.

The committee reportedly said the decision was to “protect our athletes from the global health crisis” caused by the coronavirus.

There was no official confirmation from the North Korea authorities. There was also no immediate reaction from the Japanese Olympic organizing committee in Tokyo.

North Korea is one of the few countries that has not yet reported a single coronavirus case, but observers assume that the virus is present there. The Tokyo Olympics are due to start on July 23.

Manu Bhaker To Represent India In Three Events In Olympics, Elavenil Valarivan Included As Chinki Misses Out

New Delhi: World number one Elavenil Valarivan was on Sunday included in a 15-member Indian shooting contingent for the Tokyo Olympics where the highly accomplished Manu Bhaker will represent the country in three events.

However, Olympic quota winner Chinki Yadav could not make the main team despite winning a gold medal in the Delhi World Cup last month.

It was decided by the national selection committee that the quota won by Chinki in the women’s 25m pistol would be swapped in favour of Anjum Moudgil, to enable her to compete in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event as India’s second entry alongside former world champion Tejaswini Sawant.

Reigning world number one in women’s 10m air rifle, Elavenil, is the only member in the Olympic team to have not secured a quota for herself but performed consistently in the Olympic qualifying cycle, forcing the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) to include her in the women’s 10m air rifle team in place of Moudgil.

To deal with the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the NRAI named two reserves in each discipline where its shooters have won quota places.

In the individual events, Bhaker will be fielded in both the women’s 25m pistol alongside the experienced Rahi Sarnobat and in her pet 10m air pistol event with Yashaswini Singh Deswal.

Besides, the 19-year-old Bhaker will partner with Saurabh Chaudhary in the 10m air pistol mixed event.

The shooters were selected based on their performance in the NRAI’s Olympic qualifying cycle, starting with the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games which was followed by World Championship (both in 2018), all four World Cups and Asian Championships in 2019 and selection trials stage 1 and 2 earlier this year.

As per the NRAI’s stated policy, an average of five best scores in an international competition, starting with the Jakarta Asiad, was taken into account while picking the final team.

Commenting on the team, NRAI president Raninder Singh said, “The main focus was to select the strongest squad for the Games and to ensure that the most consistent performers in each event, during the course of this entire Olympic cycle, do not miss out.”

He added, “The selection I believe has been done purely on merit and in keeping with the provisions of NRAI’s Olympic selection ranking policy. ”

“This merit based approach has enabled us to field a third specialist shooter in the women’s 10m air rifle events as well as go with the two best shooters in women’s 25M pistol event.”

Bhaker’s overall performances in the women’s 25m pistol had been better and the committee felt it would take advantage of the double-start rule and compete in both the women’s 10m air pistol and the 25m pistol individual events.

Moudgil would also compete in the mixed air rifle team competition alongside Deepak Kumar as India’s second team in the event. Elavenil and Divyansh Singh Panwar would form the first pairing.

Apurvi Chandela, therefore, will compete only in the women’s 10m air rifle individual competition.

Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela were the first India shooters to earn quotas for the Tokyo Games at the 2018 World Championships. Chandela and Elavenil will participate in the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Both Chinki and Anjum were kept as reserves in 25m pistol and rifle 3 positions events respectively.

The quota belongs to the country and not the shooter who secures it.

Bhubaneswar: Ace para shuttler of Odisha Pramod Bhagat has brought laurels for the country once again by clinching a bronze medal in the mixed doubles category of the third Dubai Para Badminton International Tournament 2021 in Dubai on Saturday.

Pramod and his partner Palak Kohli had to content with the third place finish in the mixed doubles category. The duo from India lost 17-21, 5-21 to French pair of Lucas Mazur and Noel Faustine in the semi-final match. Pramod and Palak gave a tough contest to the France duo in the first set. But in the second set, they lost the momentum giving an opportunity to the opposition to bounce back.

However, Pramod had improved performances both in the singles and doubles category. He excelled splendidly to enter the summit clashes in both the categories.

In the singles semi-final, Pramod prevailed over Md Abdul Malek Huzairi of Malaysia 21-07, 21-17. The Odisha para shuttler will meet his compatriot Nitesh Kumar in the summit clash on Sunday.

In the doubles semi-final, Pramod and his Indian partner Manoj Sarkar edged out Deep Ranjan Bisoyee and Arbaz Ansari of India 23-21, 21-19 in a keenly contested match. Pramod and Manoj will lock horns with their compatriot Sukant Kadam and his partner Nitesh Kumar in the Sunday final.

New Delhi: Top Indian table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal got a shot in the arm ahead of the 2021 Olympics when it was officially confirmed on Saturday that he had qualified for the quadrennial event in the men’s singles category.

The Chennai-based player, who rose two spots in the ITTF world rankings on Saturday, tweeted “Official confirmation of qualification in the Men’s Singles event for the @Tokyo2020 Olympic Games with the most recent rankings released by @ittfworld. Happy to rise a couple of places to 30th.”

The top-ranked India player had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics last month when he had beaten Pakistan’s Rameez Muhammad in the Asian Olympic Qualification tournament at Doha, but the confirmation about his qualification has come a fortnight later.

This will be Sharath Kamal’s fourth Olympic Games in men’s singles, having competed in the quadrennial Games for the first time in 2004 Athens, where India’s shotgun shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had won the silver medal in double trap.

The 38-year-old Sharath Kamal’s preparations for Tokyo were badly impacted due to the Covid-19 pandemic but he returned to the table after a gap of nearly a year to compete at the WTT Contender Doha. That gave him the confidence to compete in the Asian Olympic Qualification tournament, also in Doha last month, and make a strong bid to qualify for Tokyo.

Mumbai: Former India captain and batting icon Sachin Tendulkar has been hospitalised as a precautionary measure, six days after he tested positive for COVID-19.

The 47-year-old took to twitter to announce the development on Friday.

“Thank you for your wishes and prayers. As a matter of abundant precaution under medical advice, I have been hospitalised. I hope to be back home in a few days. Take care and stay safe everyone,” Tendulkar wrote.

Tendulkar had tested positive for the dreaded infection on March 27 and was in home isolation ever since.

The batting great, who was part of India’s historic World Cup win in 2011, also wished his teammates on the 10th anniversary of the victory.

“Wishing all Indians & my teammates on the 10th anniversary of our World Cup win,” he tweeted.

Besides Tendulkar, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, his elder brother Yusuf and S Badrinath — all of whom had recently participated at the Road Safety World Series Challenge — have so far announced that they have tested positive for COVID-19.

Tendulkar had led the Indian team to victory in the veteran’s tournament in Raipur where crowds were allowed inside the stadiums.

'Umpire's Call' Will Remain, Rules ICC

Dubai: The contentious ‘Umpire’s Call’ will continue to be a part of the Decision Review System, the International Cricket Council’s Board ruled on Thursday, but introduced a few changes to the current DRS protocols.

Called “confusing” by India captain Virat Kohli, the Umpire’s Call has been a subject of controversy for a while now.

As per the existing rule, 50 per cent of the ball should be hitting at least one of the three stumps for the batsman to be adjudged LBW on review in case an umpire’s not out call has been challenged.

“The Cricket Committee had an excellent discussion around Umpire’s Call and analysed its use extensively,” ICC’s Cricket Committee head and former Indian captain Anil Kumble said in statement issued by the governing body after the end of its board meetings on Wednesday.

“The principle underpinning DRS was to correct clear errors in the game whilst ensuring the role of the umpire as the decision maker on the field of play was preserved…Umpire’s Call allows that to happen, which is why it is important it remains,” he added.

Kohli had argued that the batsman should be declared out if the ball is hitting the stumps, even if marginally.

The ICC introduced three minor changes to the DRS and third Umpire protocols.

“For LBW reviews, the height margin of the Wicket Zone will be lifted to the top of the stumps to ensure the same Umpire’s Call margin around the stumps for both height and width,” the ICC stated.

This means that the review, which until now covered till the base of the bails, will extend to the top of the bails as well, effectively increasing the height of the wicket zone while analysing the trajectory of the ball.

A player will also be able to ask the umpire whether a genuine attempt has been made to play the ball before deciding to review an LBW decision.

“The third Umpire will check a replay of any short run that has been called and correct any error prior to the next ball being bowled.”

It was also decided that the interim COVID-19 regulations that were introduced in 2020 to allow international cricket to resume will continue to be followed.

It means that home umpires will be asked to officiate games where neutral umpires were previously required ad hygiene protocols like ban on saliva will continue.

“The committees noted the excellent performances by the home umpires over the past 9 months but encouraged the more widespread appointment of neutral Elite Panel umpires whenever circumstances allow,” the ICC release said.

Odisha Boasts Of Cycling Stars, But Lacks Velodrome

Minati Mohapatra became the first sportsperson from Odisha and the first woman cyclist of the country to bag Arjuna Award in 1980. An eight-time National champion, she had won five gold medals at the 1979 Indo-Sri Lanka Cycling Series in Colombo and a bronze at the 1970 National Games in Cuttack.

It’s heartening to write that Odisha’s long quest for a worthy successor to the legendary Minati Mohapatra has at last ended with the emergence of Swasti Singh. Riding on a wave of success, the 20-year-old girl from Rourkela is fast becoming the new cycling heart-throb of the State.

Swasti set both road and track on fire, pedalling her way to two gold and two silver medals in National championships, all within a month. She captured gold in elite women’s 60km mass start at the 25th Senior National Road Cycling Championship in Navi Mumbai and followed it with another gold in 20km point race and a silver each in 10km scratch race and 3000m individual pursuit at the 72nd Senior National Track Cycling Championship in Hyderabad. On top of it, she created new national record in 3000m individual pursuit with a time of 4 minutes 05.547 seconds.

Swasti won her first national medal – a bronze – at the 2018 Junior Track Championship in New Delhi and the very same year came her first international medal, at the Asian Junior Track Championship where she won a gold. She has gone from strength to strength since then.

Swasti’s kitty is now embellished with 15 national (6 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze) and 3 international (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) medals. No wonder she has become the No 1 woman cyclist of India in terms of endurance.

Swasti’s love affair with cycling started in 2015 when she was in 7th standard at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Rourkela. “From childhood days, I was passionate about sports and loved to participate in whatever games played in our school or locality. I tried athletics, kho-kho, kabaddi, badminton and table tennis before a school circular set up my journey in cycling,’’ recalls Swasti after ending her glorious campaign in Hyderabad.

“The circular was regarding a month-long cycling selection trial at Cuttack. I joined the trial and went on to win 4 gold medals in the State Cycling Championship, held at DRIEMS, Tangi (Cuttack) in 2015,’’ added the cyclist, who has been honing her skill at the SAI National Cycling Academy in New Delhi since 2017.

Speaking about her journey thus far, Swasti said it has been tough, but worth undertaking. “My parents and my elder brother Aditya, who is also a national-level cyclist, encouraged me and provided the initial support. But the most important contribution came from my first coach Sushil (Das) sir. He gave me a De Rosa, my first sports bicycle that cost him Rs 50,000. Under his tutelage I learned a lot. Besides giving me a strong foundation, he helped me improve my endurance and will power. Without Sushil sir’s guidance I could not have come this far,” disclosed Swasti, who trained under Das in Rourkela for two years before shifting to Delhi.

Swasti at Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati.

But the humble coach was not willing to take all credit himself. “Most of the credit should go to Rourkela Steel Plant, which took care of Swasti’s major needs during her formative years. RSP built a cycling track in Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium where most of the competitive cyclists trained. Swasti got her first high-end bicycle worth Rs 2.5 lakh, thanks to the initiative taken by former Odisha cricketer Pannalal Bose, who was then the Senior Manager Sports, RSP. In order to devote more time for Swasti, I was shifted to Sports Department,” revealed Das, also an RSP employee.

Himself a former international cyclist, Das, however, pointed it to Swasti’s intrinsic talent, dedication and hard work as the major secrets of her success. “Rain or storm, she would never miss a training session. If any of my pupils misses a training session without justifiable reason, I punish the concerned pupil by making him/her stand as a mute spectator in the next session. But Swasti never gave me any scope to punish her,” reminisced Das.

“Swasti is a dedicated cyclist with inherent talent. If fit, she never misses training sessions. Endurance is her forte and skills come to her naturally. She is a quiet girl and very focused on her goals. She has all the qualities to rise to great height. What she needs is guidance and support,” stated coach Das.

Swasti with coach and mentor Sushil Das.
Swasti with coach and mentor Sushil Das.

Sports Authority of India (SAI) too played a commendable role in transforming Swasti from a promising talent into an international medalist. Because of SAI, the Odisha cyclist now has two Japan-made bicycles (a Dolan worth Rs 3.2 lakh for track and another Dolan worth Rs 1.5 lakh for road) at her disposal.

Another good quality about Swasti is that success has not made her complacent and she aims to represent the country at the greatest sporting platform on the earth. “Making international debut in India jersey continues to be the most memorable moment of my career. But my ultimate goal is to compete at the Olympic Games,” said the unassuming cyclist, now a Standard-XII student of the National Institute of Open Schooling.

Swasti, of course, knows it very well that a gap, as vast as the ocean, lies in between dreaming for Olympics and turning it into reality. But she is determined to swim. “I know it is not an easy task. I have to prove my mettle in majors such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and World Championships before hoping for an Olympics ticket. But I will give my best to reach there in future,” maintained Swasti, who is also good at academics, securing above 97 per cent marks in school exams.

VN Singh, the chief coach of Indian Cycling Team (Endurance) has no doubt that Swasti is an energetic and talented cyclist. But he says it is too early to predict if she can make it to the Olympics. “Swasti has reached a milestone by becoming a national champion. But to become an Olympian she has to pass many more tests. However, nothing is impossible,” felt the chief coach.

Swasti with Asian medal in 2018.

The heart-warming achievements of Swasti have certainly come as an opportunity for Odisha to expand the popularity of cycling in the state and draw more and more youngsters to its fold. But to cash in on the opportunity, what the state needs to do first is to create infrastructure facility.

Though Odisha boasts of an Arjuna Awardee and many international medalists in cycling, it still lacks a velodrome. At a time, when the State Government gives top priority to promotion of sports, one hopes this need will be taken care of soon. Moreover, cycling has assumed greater importance for a healthy life and it is being viewed as an ideal solution to issues related to air pollution.

“Despite winning national and international medals, Swasti has not yet received any reward from the State Government. But she has never complained,” lamented coach Das, emotion palpable in his voice. But he was also quick to suggest that it would be the best reward for Swasti and her ilks of the State if sports-loving Naveen Patnaik takes steps to fulfil the need of a velodrome on priority basis.

New Delhi: Thirty sportspersons and support staff across disciplines were found to be COVID-19 positive after 741 precautionary tests were conducted at the National Centres of Excellence in Patiala and Bengaluru, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) said on Wednesday.

However, the positive results in both the centres do not include any Tokyo Olympic-bound athlete.

India’s men’s boxing chief coach CA Kuttappa and shot put coach Mohinder Singh Dhillon are among those who have tested positive for the virus in the recent drive at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), a SAI source confirmed to PTI.

Later, SAI also issued a statement which said that 313 and 428 tests were conducted in Patiala and Bengaluru respectively. While 26 were found to be positive in Patiala, the Bengaluru count stood at four.

“Keeping the safety of Olympic-bound athletes, coaches and support staff in mind, the SAI conducted precautionary RT-PCR tests at National Centre of Excellence in Patiala and Bengaluru. The reports received today indicate that all Olympic-bound athletes at both centres are COVID negative,” the SAI statement read.

It is learnt that out of 26 positive cases in Patiala, 16 are sportspersons and rest are support staff. The 16 quarantined sportspersons include 10 boxers and six track and field athletes, the SAI source said.

In Bengaluru, a race walking coach is among those who have tested positive for the virus.

“…the good thing is that all positive cases are not Olympic-bound athletes. The positive athletes have been isolated and the entire campus has been sanitised.”

All weightlifters housed at the premier sports institute have returned negative for the virus.

The SAI source also confirmed that the positive cases in both the centres will have no bearing on the preparation of India’s Olympic-bound athletes.

“There is no question of training being suspended. The COVID positive cases have been isolated separately inside the colour-coded SAI campuses and they are doing fine with no serious medical issues,” the source said.

The NIS Patiala is primarily the base of Olympic-bound boxers, track and field athletes and weightlifters along with sportspersons from some other disciplines.

The boxers who have tested positive include Asian silver-medallist Deepak Kumar and India Open gold-medallist Sanjit.

“Some more test results are awaited at this point,” another source stated.

The Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in July-August later this year.

The athletes gearing up for the big event have begun travelling outside the country for training and competition after spending several months either staying at home or being confined to their hostel rooms.

Virat Kohli's Indians 'Cooked', Onus On BCCI To Give Respite To Players

New Delhi: After India skipper Virat Kohli’s criticism of scheduling of international matches during the times of Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian cricket board could look into the matter while drawing up the calendar for future matches if the pandemic doesn’t subside.

“As of now, nothing has been discussed among the Board officials. But in case it comes up, it will be discussed in the Apex Council meeting,” said a senior official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to IANS.

It has been learned that the BCCI could take up the matter, though as of now hosting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the top players appearing in it despite the rise in Covid-19 cases, remains the priority for the BCCI.

A successful and incident-free completion of IPL is important since India is scheduled to host the T20 World Cup in October-November.

Kohli criticised the scheduling after the third and final ODI against England, saying, “Scheduling needs to be looked at in future because playing in bio-bubbles for so long, two to three months, is going to be very, very difficult, going forward.”

Kohli talked about mental strength of players as well. “You can’t expect everyone to be at the same level of mental strength. Sometimes you do get cooked and you do feel like a bit of a change,” he said.

The India captain’s lament appears valid considering that the rival players from England got plenty of rest due to a rotation policy of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

England’s stand-in captain for the last two ODIs, Jos Buttler, said after the series: “It’s been great that everyone’s health has been really looked after and whenever it’s possible to get out of the bubble and back in.”

Buttler himself benefitted from it. He played the first Test against India in Chennai after appearing in the two preceding Tests in Sri Lanka. Then he was rested, and sent to England to give him a break while the next three Tests were played in India. He returned for the limited-overs leg of the India tour.

Jonny Bairstow missed the first two Tests on the tour of India and returned for the final two Tests and the limited-overs leg.

Moeen Ali missed the last two Tests before returning for the limited-overs leg.

Indian players, however, have not had such luxury.

The Indians have been constantly on tour since September 2020 when they travelled to the UAE for the IPL and then followed it up immediately by flying down to Australia for a full series. The large Indian squad returned and then geared up for the full series against England, re-entering the bio-bubble just after a week of their arrival.

After almost two-month long series against England, they play the IPL. The all-format players, like Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, found it especially tough.

Kohli though managed a break, missing the last three Tests of the Australia tour due to the birth of his child.

Fast bowler Bumrah too got a break. He opted out of the fourth and final Test against England and the white ball series. He got married immediately after the England Test series.

However, the upcoming season is going to be tough for players.

Players will be confined to their hotels during the IPL. Unlike in the UAE, where hotels at least had private beaches, hotels in India will be closed. Teams have reserved hotel floors and while the restaurants, gymnasiums etc. are restricted to the team members only, the team room is the only place where cricketers can unwind.

Immediately after the IPL ends on May 30, the Indian team leaves for England to play the World Test Championship final from June 18-22 and then follow it up with a five-Test series against host England.

The Indian team then returns home and starts preparation for the T20 World Cup.

If the pandemic doesn’t subside, the bio-bubble life may have to continue till the end of the year.

New Delhi: Virat Kohli has become the third captain to lead India in 200 international matches. Kohli, who became India’s captain in all formats of the game in January 2017, led India for the 200th time on Sunday in the third ODI against England.

He thus joins his predecessor MS Dhoni and Mohammad Azharuddin as the only players to have led India in 200 international matches.

While Azharuddin had led India in 221 matches, Dhoni led India in 332 matches. Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014 after which Kohli became India’s captain in the longest format of the game.

Dhoni then resigned from limited overs captaincy in January 2017, thus handing over the reins to Kohli in all formats, before eventually from international cricket in August 2020.

Azharuddin, meanwhile, had succeeded Krishnamachari Srikanth in 1989 until 1999.

Pune: India got a scare before they managed to beat England by a slender 7-run margin in the third and final One-day International against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday.

Sam Curran (95 not out off 83 deliveries) threatened to take the game away from India after the home side had reduced the Englishmen to 200 for seven at one stage in chase of 329. However, the total proved too much in the end. Shardul Thakur took four wickets for 67 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar took three wickets for 42 runs.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 329 in 48.2 overs. Rishabh Pant (78 off 62 balls), Hardik Pandya (64 off 44 balls) and opener Shikhar Dhawan (67 off 56 balls) contributed to India’s total. For England, Mark Wood (3/34) was the most successful bowler.

India had won the first ODI by 66 runs while England won the second match by six wickets.

Brief scores: India 329 all out in 48.2 overs (R Pant 78, S Dhawan 67, H Pandya 64, M Wood 3/34) beat England 322/9 in 50 overs (S Curran 95 not out, D Malan 50, S Thakur 4/67, B Kumar 3/42) by seven runs.

Series: India won 2-1.

New Delhi: The Indian trio of Shreyasi Singh, Rajeshwari Kumari and Manisha Keer claimed the gold medal in the women’s trap team final after blanking Kazakhstan 6-0 on the last competition day of the ISSF shooting World Cup here on Sunday.

In the gold medal match, the team fielded by the host nation did not break a sweat as it romped to a crushing win over Kazakhstan’s Sarsenkul Rysbekova, Aizhan Dosmagambetova and Mariya Dmitriyenko, taking the number of gold won by India to 14 in the tournament.

The Indian shooters, especially the experienced Shreyasi and Manisha, missed very few shots in the final and proved to be too good for their opponents.

Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Shreyasi, Rajeshwari and Manisha scored 321 in the qualification rounds held at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Thursday.

Kazakhstan’s Rysbekova, Dosmagambetova and Dmitriyenko shot a total of 308.

On Saturday, the pair of Shreyasi and Kynan Chenai missed out on a podium finish as they settled for the fourth place in the trap mixed team final of the prestigious tournament.

Thanks to the country’s dominant showing for a major part of the tournament, India continued to lead the standings with 14 gold, nine silver and six bronze for a total of 29 podium finishes.

India Win Gold In Men’s Trap Team Event, End Campaign On High

Shotgun shooters Prithviraj Tondaiman, Lakshay Sheoran and Kynan Chenai ended India’s campaign at the ISSF World Cup with a gold medal in the men’s trap team event here on Sunday.

The visitors led 2-0 at the start before the Indians came back to level the scores. The Kazakhstan team again went ahead only for the home shooters to rally one more time and make it 4-4.

In the deciding round, India shot better to emerge 6-4 winners.

Kazakhstan’s Victor Khassyanov, Maxim Kolomoyets and Andrey Mogilevskiy bagged the bronze medal beating Qatar’s Mohammed Al Rumaihi, Saeed Abusharib and Nasser Ali Al Hemaidi 6-4.

Together, the Indian team Prithviraj, Lakshay and Kynan aggregated 494 in the qualification held here on Thursday.

The Slovakians Michal Slamka, Filip Marinov and Adrian Drobny shot a total of 498 in their qualifying outings at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range.

The Kazakhs shot 489 in the qualification while Qatar managed to 466 to set up a bronze medal match ahead of fifth-placed UAE (327).

Kynan, who finished fourth in the individual men’s trap to miss out on a podium on Friday, had something to cheer about as he ended the campaign on a positive note.

Pune: England won the toss and chose to bowl in the third ODI against India at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday.

India captain Virat Kohli said that the hosts have brought in fast bowler T. Natarajan for spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

“I would’ve bowled first again, but it seems like the toss is completely out of my control right now. It’s a hard pitch and has some grass covering. We’ve introspected and identified a few areas that we need to improve on, put up 20-30 more runs with the bat and put up a better show with the ball. Our best cricket has come out when our backs have been against the wall – Test series, after being one down and the same in T20s, after being 1-2 down. We have to be at our best today to win the decider. We have a tactical change: Natarajan comes in for Kuldeep Yadav,” said Kohli.

England captain Jos Buttler, meanwhile, said that they have chosen to play fast bowler Mark Wood in place of all-rounder Tom Curran.

“We’re bowling first, for similar reasons as the first two games. Very proud of the performance the other day, and it showed our passion. It’s important to continue playing the brand of cricket that we are known for. It’s been a fantastic tour with some great matches, and it’s come down to the last game of the tour that decides the result. We’re desperate to win today’s decider. Just one change for today: Mark Wood comes in for Tom Curran,” said Buttler.

With the three-match series level at 1-1, the winner of the third ODI will win the series.

India: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (captain), KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna and T Natarajan.

England: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper/captain), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley and Mark Wood.
