Bangkok: World champion PV Sindhu dished out a below-par performance to lose her quarterfinal match, while Sameer Verma’s gallant fight ended in agony in the Toyota Thailand Open Super 1000 tournament here on Friday.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponappa, however, entered the mixed doubles semifinal with a stunning win over world no. 6 pair of Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh of Malaysia in a nail-bitting quarterfinal duel.

Olympic silver medallist Sindhu looked a pale shadow of the player who had won the world championship gold in 2019 as she was all at sea against home favourite Ratchanok Inthanon, who rode on her precision and quality of strokes to outclass the Indian 21-13 21-9 in a lop-sided contest.

In men’s singles, Sameer’s giant-killing run also came to an end after he squandered a match point to go down 13-21 21-19 20-22 to world no. 3 Anders Antonsen of Denmark in a quarterfinal contest.

With the defeat of Sindhu and Sameer, Indian challenge in singles competition ended in the tournament.

The only bright spot was the duo of Satwik and Ashwini as they shocked the fifth seeded Malaysian pair 18-21 24-22 22-20 after toiling hard for one hour and 15 minutes.

The world no. 22 Indian pair will be up against top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.

Ratchanok, who had lost to Sindhu in their last three meetings, came out with a positive intent and eked out a three-point lead early on even as Sindhu failed to control the length. The Thai soon grabbed a four-point advantage at the first-game interval.

Sindhu looked to force the pace after the break and caught up at 13-13. However, it was a one-way traffic after that as Ratchanok blew the Indian away with eight straight points to pocket the opening game without much ado.

The change of sides didn’t bring any change of fortunes for Sindhu as she trailed 1-7 at one stage before going into the break seven points behind her rival.

After the breather, Ratchanok eased to 19-7 before grabbing a massive 12 match points. The Thai missed a point due to a misjudgement at the backline before shutting the match with another precise return.

In the other singles match, Antonsen was up 5-0 with Sameer looking tentative and struggling with his length, hitting long and wide. The Danish shuttler continued his good run, managing to keep a six-point advantage at the break.

Sameer couldn’t engage his rival in long rallies or put any kind of pressure and also struggled with his shots as Antonsen cantered to eight game points and took the opening game when the Indian went wide again.

After the change of sides, Antonsen opened up a 5-1 lead but Sameer managed to claw back with four straight points. A brilliant cross court net shot helped the Indian to keep it 7-7 before he took the lead as his opponent erred.

However, at the interval, it was Antonsen who held a slender one-point lead. Sameer kept breathing down his neck and grabbed a game point with an onrushing return. He roared back into the contest when Antenson faltered at the net.

The decider started on a competitive note as the duo were 5-5 at one stage before Sameer moved to 9-6 with a few tricky shots and then held three-point advantage at the interval.

Antonsen regained his focus and drew parity at 13-13 after Sameer erred twice at the net. It was a game of nerves after that as both the shuttlers moved neck-and-neck till 18-18. Sameer then pushed one to the net and won a video referral next to move to 19-19.

Sameer grabbed a match point next with a deep return but found the net next as it was 20-all.

Antonsen grabbed a match point with a precise return at the fore court and sealed the match with a similar shot which the Indian failed to reach.

Team India's Victory Over Australia Highly Inspirational For Youth: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi again lauded the stellar performance of the Indian cricket team which registered a remarkable Test series win over Australia. He said that the victory is highly inspirational for the youth of the country.

Addressing the 18th Convocation of Tezpur University, Assam via video conferencing, the Prime Minister said the team, despite facing a number of challenges, overpowered the Australia team with their talent and temperament.

“Indian team faced a lot of challenges in the recent tour of Australia. They suffered crushing defeat yet recovered equally fast and won the next match. The players showed determination despite injuries. They took the challenge head on and looked for fresh solutions instead of getting frustrated by difficult conditions,” Modi said.

“There were inexperienced players but their morale was high and they grabbed the opportunity given to them. They overpowered a better team with their talent and temperament,” he added.

The Indian team, after facing an embarrassing loss in the first Test in Adelaide where they were bowled out for their lowest Test score of 36, came back strongly in the next three matches to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy in an emphatic manner. The series saw Indian team register their first win at the Gabba in Brisbane – a venue where Australia last suffered a defeat in 1988.

The prime minister stressed that the stellar performance of our players is important not just from the point of view of the sports field.

First, we should have faith and confidence in our ability; second, a positive mindset begets positive results. Third and most important lesson, said Modi, is – if one is facing two options, one safe and the other is an option of a difficult victory, one must surely explore the option of victory.

“There is no harm in occasional failure and one should not refrain from taking the risks. We need to be proactive and fearless,” he said.

“If we overcome the fear of failure and unnecessary pressure, we will emerge fearless. This new India, confident and dedicated to goals, is evident not only in the cricket field, all of you are part of this picture,” Modi added.

Earlier, after the three-wicket win in the last Test on Tuesday, Modi had congratulated the Ajinkya Rahane-led side and tweeted: “We are all overjoyed at the success of the Indian cricket team in Australia. Their remarkable energy and passion was visible throughout. So was their stellar intent, remarkable grit and determination. Congratulations to the team! Best wishes for your future endeavours.”

Cuttack: The Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) on Friday recommended the names of as many as six players to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for their bidding in the 14th edition of the Indian Premiere League (IPL) 2021 all set to be held between April and May this year.

The players include Subhransu Senapati, Rajesh Dhupar, Rajesh Mohanty, Papu Ray, Gourav Choudhury and Tarini Sa.

While Subhransu and Gourav have been recommended as batsmen, the names of Mohanty and Tarini have been sent as medium pacers. Dhupar and Papu have been categorised as wicket keeper-batsman and tweaker, respectively.

According to OCA sources, all these players have been selected on the basis of their stellar performances in the on-going Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 cricket tournament and past records.

“All the recommended players are young and promising. Subhransu is now arguably the best batsman in the State team. However, the competition is pretty tough to get a berth in an IPL franchise. I wish them all the best,” said Odisha head coach and former Ranji player Rashmi Ranjan Parida.

The countdown for the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league has already started with the franchises announcing the lists of the retained and released players on January 20. The auction for the mega event is tentatively scheduled for February 11.

It is worth mentioning that, all-rounder Biplab Samantray and wicket-keeper-batsman Haladhar Das from Odisha have played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Deccan Chargers, respectively in previous seasons.

New Delhi: Google is celebrating Team India’s historic win over Australia in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Test series in a unique way.

Whenever an internet user searches for ‘Indian cricket team’ on the search engine, he/she is greeted with virtual fireworks. The tricolour fireworks appear on the screen once search results for the Indian cricket team query surfaces on the Google site.

Google had announced the arrival of the virtual fireworks via a tweet on searching for “India National Cricket Team”.

“Still celebrating India’s win? Us too,” Google tweeted on Wednesday, a day after India registered their second consecutive Test series win in Australia.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were amongst the people congratulating the Ajinkya Rahane-led side for winning the four-match Test series.

“One of the greatest test series wins ever. Congrats India and well played Australia, what a series,” Pichai had tweeted.

“Last hour of the last day of the last Test. Test series for the ages. Congrats to Team India!” Nadella had said.

India on Tuesday had defeated Australia by three wickets on the fifth and final day of the fourth Test, while chasing a mammoth 328-run target. The loss was Australia’s first in over 32 years at the Gabba.

The hosts had won the first Test of the series in Adelaide, while bowling out India with the pink ball for their lowest Test total of 36. The Rahane-led side, however, registered a stunning comeback in Melbourne, winning the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets. The third Test then ended in an epic draw in Sydney.

Ranjita, stepping into the Snow Games, ideally means Odisha would also be placing its first step in the arena of Snow and Ice Sports of the country.

Ranjita has certainly made everyone proud by representing the State in the second Khelo India National Winter Games, 2021 to be held at Gulmarg, J&K from February 19-25, 2021, in the Alpine Ski event.

This apart, she will also represent Odisha in the Senior National Ski and Snowboard Championship 2021 to be held in Uttarakhand from February 26-28, 2021. She happens to be the only qualified skier of the State for this event, sources said.

Ranjita’s keen interest in adventure sports prompted her to undergo different adventure trainings after completion of her graduation. Her father Raghunath Behera is a retired employee of Rourkela Steel Plant. She is also an NCC ‘C’ certificate holder from the Directorate of NCC, Odisha.

In an exclusive interview with OTV, the snowgirl narrated the journey so far and her plans ahead.

“My adventure journey started in 2016, and I did a Snow Skiing course two years later. It is after the training that I was able to build myself step by step. I will be participating in the Slalom event. It’s an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. I will also be participating in Ski Mountaineering in the coming days,” she said.

On how she developed an interest in adventure, Ranjita stated, “I’m a holder of NCC ‘C’ Certificate, and that was over before I completed my graduation. My aim is to become an Army officer. Adventure sports was somewhere hidden in me, I always wanted to be different from others. I haven’t thought about the Olympics as yet, but I want to cross every hurdle that comes my way.”

“This event is likely to witness participation of around 150 people. This is my first step. I am as nervous as I am excited. A participant always wants to come home with a medal. I will give my best to earn a medal,” she added.

Congratulating the ‘snowgirl’ for her upcoming events, Minister for Sports and Youth Services, Tusharkanti Behera said, “It is a moment of pride for us that Ranjita Behera will be the first Odia from the state to participate in Snow Games. This is no small feat considering Odisha’s terrain and climate. With sheer grit and hard work, she has achieved this. Her dedication to be a Skier is commendable and we will extend all necessary support to her to excel and win medals. She will be an inspiration for others, especially young girls, who may have dreams to follow the sport of skiing.”

New Delhi: The comparisons with the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni are flattering but young Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant on Thursday said he wants to carve his own identity in the game after playing a key role in the side’s historic Test series win in Australia.

Pant is often compared with the two-time World Cup winning former captain and wicketkeeper batsman, who retired last year after a glorious international career.

“You feel amazing when you are compared to someone like MS Dhoni and you compare me with him,” Pant told reporters after landing here from Australia where his match and series-winning effort of 89 in the second innings of the fourth Test won him all-round praise.

“It’s amazing but I don’t want to be compared with anyone, I want to make myself as a name in Indian cricket, because it’s not good compare some legend with some youngster.”

The 23-year-old also scored a 97 in the drawn third Test in Sydney. And he wants to savour the triumph for now.

“I think the whole team is very happy with the way we played the series in Australia,” he said.

India made a stupendous fight-back after being bowled out for a record lowest score of 36 in Adelaide and went on to win the series despite their captain not being available for the remainder of the contest and many key players lost to injuries.

They won the second Test in Melbourne and drew the next at the SCG before pulling off a remarkable victory at the Gabba — where Australia had not lost since 1988 — to clinch the series.

Odisha Ace Cricketer Madhuri Mehta Eyes Surprising Comeback In Indian Team

Bhubaneswar: First international women cricketer from Odisha, Madhuri Mehta is eyeing to make a astounding comeback to the national team. The 29-year-old ace batsman scored the highest runs in the Women’s Cricket League conducted by the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) which concluded on Wednesday.

Madhuri played five matches notching 299 runs which included a ton and two half centuries. She was also leading the Odisha Red team which secured the league.

Madhuri was selected in India women team in 2012 and earned her debut against West Indies at Basseterre. However, she was later dropped from the team in 2014.

During an one-to-one conversation with OTV’s Niranjan Reddy on the sidelines of the Women’s Cricket League, Mehta said that she is hoping to make a comeback with the blue jersey.

Expressing her resurgent performance, Mehta said, “I am glad that my hard work paid off and I could score the highest runs in the league. The initiative of OCA will give the budding talents, particularly women, a platform to show their skills. These league matches will also help the players identify and shape their lacunas and boost their confidence.”

“Odisha has a huge potential to produce international level players and league matches of this kind will help in identifying young talents. I also hope that the matches will help me reclaiming a berth in Indian team,” she added.

On winning the league captaining the Team Red, Mehta said, “Cooperating with a junior team as a captain, being a senior player was challenging task but my team was a balanced one and I enjoyed guiding them.”

“OCA will hold T20 matches also and that too with floodlights. This will provide ample opportunity for us to groom ourselves for international matches,” added the cricketer.

“I had recently played the Challengers Trophy in Cuttack where my performance was really good. I was selected in India-A team and I am working hard and playing matches, whenever possible. I hope this will help me returning back to the Indian team,” stated Mehta.

IPL 2021

New Delhi: Sanju Samson replaced Steve Smith as Rajasthan Royals captain after the Australian batsman and some other under-performing stars were released by their respective IPL franchises even as Chennai Super Kings retained veteran Suresh Raina for the upcoming IPL-14.

The deadline for the eight franchises to submit the lists of retained and released players for the next edition of the lucrative league ended on Wednesday.

Samson was appointed to the top job after RR decided against renewing former skipper Steve Smith’s contract.

“As the IPL has grown, the captaincy has become a year-round task, and as such strong local Indian leadership has become increasingly important,” said RR owner Manoj Badale in a statement.

“Sanju made his debut as a Royal, and it has been a joy to watch his development over the last 8 years. He is the ideal person to lead the Royals into the 2021 season,” he added.

Smith’s contract ended in October 2020.

The Australians, smarting from a Test series loss to an injury-plagued India, took a hit as the likes of the explosive Glenn Maxwell and opener Aaron Finch too were released by Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively.

Also released by KXIP were West Indies all-rounder Sheldon Cottrell, Afghanistan’s Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and New Zealand’s Jimmy Neesham, who underwent a surgery recently to treat an injured finger.

CSK’s Harbhajan Singh and Mumbai Indians’ Lasith Malinga were among the other big names to be released by their respective sides ahead of next month’s auction.

Harbhajan was joined by the likes of Kedar Jadhav, Piyush Chawla and Murali Vijay who were also let go by the franchise.

Also released by MI was Sherfane Rutherford, while Delhi Capitals decided to enter the next edition without English batsman Jason Roy, wicketkeeper Alex Carey, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane and seamer Mohit Sharma.

Malinga had been a prominent part of MI’s title-winning campaigns in the past though he was not there last time due to personal reasons.

Under Smith’s captaincy, inaugural edition champions RR finished last in the 2020 IPL when the star Australian batsman played all the 14 league matches, scoring 311 runs at a strike rate of 131, including three half-centuries.

Ahead of the 2018 IPL, Smith was the only player retained by the Royals for Rs 12.5 crore. The same year, he was appointed as the captain.

However, his impact came under the scanner after the team’s disastrous outing in the UAE last year.

“I am excited about the challenge that lies ahead of me as the leader of the team,” said new captain Samson.

“The Royals have had some wonderful captains over the years and I’m so grateful for all the time I’ve spent working with and learning from great leaders like Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith!! I now cannot wait to get started and look forward to the season ahead.”

The seasoned Raina was retained by the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK notwithstanding his sudden departure from the last IPL in the UAE.

It is believed the three-time winners decided to continue with Raina in order to bolster the batting order that struggled during a forgettable last season, which culminated in a seventh-place finish and a league-stage elimination for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2008.

The left-handed Raina has been an integral part of the Super Kings from the beginning, emerging as their highest scorer while guiding them to two IPL titles.

Stoinis made useful contributions in the 2020 edition and helped the Capitals reach their first-ever IPL final.

Batting mostly in the middle order, he amassed 352 runs at an average of 25.14 and a strike rate of 148.52.

With the ball, he took 13 wickets at an economy of 9.53.

With Rs 15 lakh left, the Super Kings had the smallest purse after the last auction and this would significantly improve for next month’s auction. Kings XI Punjab had the largest at Rs 16.5 crore before Wednesday.

Before Wednesday’s releases, Rajasthan Royals had Rs 14.75 crore, Sunrisers Hyderabad (10.1 crore), Delhi Capitals (9 crore), Kolkata Knight Riders (8.5 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore (6.4 crore), and Mumbai Indians (1.95 crore).

India’s tour of Australia, which started on November 27, ended on Tuesday with India beating Australia in the four-match Test series 2-1 and the T20 series 2-1 while Australia won the ODI series 2-1.

“Over the past nine weeks, the Indian and Australian men’s teams completed outstanding One-Day International and Twenty20 International series, followed by one of the greatest Border-Gavaskar Test series ever contested. Despite the many public health and logistical challenges, the BCCI engaged with a spirit of cooperation befitting their status as one of international sport’s greatest ambassadors,” said the letter.

“From the sublime fast bowling of Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins, to the wonderful batting of Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith, to the exciting debuts of Shubman Gill and Cameron Green — and much, much more — the past two months of cricket have been absolutely enthralling. We will never forget the sacrifices made by our friends at the BCCI that made all this possible,” it read.

The Test series featured debuts for Cameron Green and Will Pucovski from Australia and Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar and T Natarajan from India.

It started with Australia beating India by eight wickets in the first Test with the visitors being blown away for a record low total of 36 in their second innings. However, India fought back despite their captain Virat Kohli going back home to win the second Test and grab a remarkable draw in the third. They then chased down a target of 328 in the fourth Test to become the first team since 1988 to beat Australia at the Gabba, Brisbane, and seal their second consecutive Test series win in the country.

“May we also take this opportunity to thank everyone who played their part to deliver this memorable series – governments, health officials, venues, broadcast and commercial partners, cricket associations, players, match officials, staff and their families. On behalf of everyone at Cricket Australia, we congratulate Team India for the resilience, courage and skill demonstrated in retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in a series that will be talked about for generations to come,” said the CA letter.

India Vs England: 18-Member Indian Squad Announced For First 2 Test Matches

New Delhi: Skipper Virat Kohli will be back in action after a well-deserved paternity break while senior pacer Ishant Sharma will return after an injury layoff to headline the pace attack when the Indian team for the first two Test matches against England is picked on Tuesday.

Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin, who could not play the Brisbane Test due to abdominal strain and back spasms respectively, are expected to be available after an extended period of rest before the four-Test series beginning in Chennai from February 5.

However, Mohammed Shami (fractured forearm), Ravidra Jadeja (fractured thumb), Umesh Yadav (calf muscle tear) and Hanuma Vihari (grade 2 muscle tear) will not be available for selection.

The new selection committee, led by Chetan Sharma, aren’t expected to spring too many surprises as most of the fit and available players currently in Australia are automatic picks.

The Indian squad will have to enter the bio-bubble on January 27 and with both Test matches in Chennai, the BCCI has decided to name a squad for the first two games (February 5-9 and 13-17) and the squad strength will be around 16-18 along with a few net bowlers.

Ishant, who was out with a side strain, had recently made comeback to competituve cricket with Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and looked in good rhythm. Along with Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, the three will man the pace attack with Shardul Thakur and T Natarajan as reserve pacers.

In the spin department, Jadeja’s like for like replacement will be Shahbaz Nadeem, who had played a Test match against South Africa in 2019. With Ashwin likely to be available and Washington Sundar having a dream debut, the slow bowling department also looks settled with Kuldeep Yadav as the back-up wrist spinner.

The two wicketkeepers will be Rishabh Pant and Wriddhiman Saha while for the reserve batsman’s slot, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul will be vying for a single slot.

Prithvi Shaw is likely to be dropped and will have to go back to domestic cricket and prove himself.

Agarwal is likely to get the nod as the selectors and team management might want KL Rahul, who had a wrist sprain, to play some Vijay Hazare Trophy and get ready for the white ball leg of the series in March.

The meeting will be held 5 pm IST.

Likely Selections

Openers (3): Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal (reserve)

Middle-order (3): Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (captain), Ajinkya Rahane (vc)

Wicketkeepers (2): Wriddhiman Saha, Rishabh Pant

All-rounder: Washington Sundar

Pacers (5) : Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, T Natarajan

Spinners: Ravichandran Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem, Kuldeep Yadav.

India Move To Top Spot In ICC World Test Championship Standings

Brisbane: India moved to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings on Tuesday following their remarkable 2-1 series win over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shubman Gill (91), Rishabh Pant (89*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (56) all played brilliant innings as India chased down the mammoth 328-run target on the final day of the fourth and final Test at The Gabba.

Australia had won the first Test of the series in Adelaide, while bowling out India with the pink ball for their lowest Test total of 36. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side, however, registered a stunning comeback in Melbourne, winning the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets. The third Test then ended in an epic draw in Sydney.

India, with 71.7 percentage points won — the factor that determines the final placings rather than total points won following a change to the points system owing to the Covid-19 disruption — sit at the top spot in the WTC table while New Zealand, holding the second spot, has 70.0 percentage points. Sitting at the third spot is Australia with 69.2 percentage points.

“India on top. After the hard-fought win at The Gabba, India move to the No.1 spot in ICC World Test Championship standings. Australia slip to No.3,” ICC tweeted.

Courtesy the win in Brisbane, India now only need to win the upcoming four-match Test series against England with a 2-0 margin to seal a spot in the WTC final, currently slated to be played in June at the iconic Lord’s stadium.

Meanwhile, India have also displaced Australia to claim the second spot in ICC Test Rankings. The Kane Williamson-led side sit at the top of the podium.

“India displace Australia to become the new No.2 in the ICC Test Team Rankings,” ICC tweeted.

The India-England Test series begins February 5 in Chennai.

Brisbane: Left-handed batsman Rishabh Pant on Tuesday became the fastest Indian wicketkeeper to score 1,000 runs in Test cricket.

Pant achieved the feat when he edged one to boundary off the bowling of right-arm pacer Pat Cummins in the post-Lunch session on the last day of the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia at The Gabba.

The 23-year-old has taken 27 innings to reach the 1000-run landmark. Before him, former India skipper MS Dhoni held the record as he had reached the 1000-run mark in 32 Test innings.

Pant has also represented India in 16 ODIs and 28 T20Is in which he has scored 374 and 210 runs respectively.

The fourth Test, meanwhile, was nicely poised at Tea break as India reached 183/3, needing 145 runs to win the match. Australia, on the other hand, need seven wickets to win the match and win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they had lost in 2018-19.

Australia had won the first Test of the series in Adelaide, while bowling out India for their lowest Test total of 36. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side then registered a stunning comeback in Melbourne, winning the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets. The third Test then ended in a draw in Sydney.

Brisbane: India will need 324 runs more, with all their wickets intact, when they come out to bat on Tuesday to win the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba.

India reached 4/0 in their chase on 328 in the extended final session on Monday before rain started pouring in and umpires were forced to call for early Stumps. Only 1.5 overs could be bowled in India’s second innings on Day Four as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 4 and 0 respectively.

The weather forecast for the final day isn’t great and Australia will be praying that rain gods stay away so that they can win the Brisbane Test and win the Border-Gavaskar series, a trophy which they lost in India’s last tour of 2018-19. On the other hand, a draw in the game would be sufficient for India to retain the coveted trophy.

The highest successful chase at Gabba ame in 1951, when Australia finished 236/7, but the Tim Paine led-side have fresher memories of how India incredibly salvaged a draw last week in Sydney.

Earlier, India bowled out Australia for 294 in their second innings, after resuming the day on 21/0.

Steve Smith was the top scorer for Australia in their second essay as he scored 55 runs off 74 deliveries, with the help of seven boundaries. David Warner, Marcus Harris and Cameron Green also made notable contributions of 48, 38 and 37. Pat Cummins and skipper Tim Paine also made scores of 28 and 27.

For India, right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Siraj picked up his maiden five-wicket haul, conceding 73 runs in 19.5 overs. Shardul Thakur also picked four wickets for 61 while debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar scalped one.

India had posted 336 in reply to Australia’s first inning score of 369, thus conceding a 33-run lead.

The four-match series is tied at 1-1 with Australia winning the first Test in Adelaide and India winning the second in Melbourne. The third Test in Sydney had ended in a draw.

Brief scores: Australia 369 and 294 (Steve Smith 55, David Warner 48; Mohammed Siraj 5/73) vs India 336 and 4/0 at Stumps on Day Four (Rohit Sharma 4*, Shubman Gill 0*; Mitchell Starc 0/4)

Brisbane: A brilliant batting partnership between Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar on Sunday made sure India remained in the game after the end of Day Three of the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba.

Thakur and Sundar shared a 123-run partnership for the seventh wicket which helped India concede a lead of just 33, which at one stage looked like to be in excess of 150.

India got bundled out for 336 in their first innings, riding on brilliant, maiden half centuries from the two young bowlers.

Australia, who had scored 369 in their first innings, then ended the day reaching 21/0 in their second innings. Openers David Warner and Marcus Harris remained unbeaten on 20 and 1 respectively, helping Australia swell their lead to 54.

Earlier, Resuming the day at 61/2, India lost Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Ajinkya Rahane in the morning session. Pujara was the first to go as he edged one to wicketkeeper Tim Paine off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood for 25 with the team’s score on 105.

Rahane followed, edging one to fourth slip off Mitchell Starc for 37 with the team score on 144.

Mayank Agarwal and Rishabh Pant added 17 more runs before Agarwal got out at team’s score of 161. Agarwal scored 38 runs, with the help of three fours and a six, in the 75 balls he faced during the course of his innings.

Pant (23) then shared a 25-run partnership with Sundar before he became the third scalp of Hazlewood who had the India wicketkeeper-batsman caught at gully by Cameron Green.

It was then that Thakur and Sundar stitched together the highest seventh-wicket partnership for India at The Gabba and brought the visitors right into the match. Both batted with great grit and determination as they didn’t allow Australia to take any further wickets and also made sure that the runs kept coming for India at a decent rate.

Thakur scored 67 runs, with the help of nine boundaries and two sixes during the course of his innings, before he got out bowled by Pat Cummins in the final session. Sundar then registered the highest individual score for a debutant batting at number seven in Australia as he scored valuable 62 runs before getting out caught at gully.

Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar had earlier held the record of the highest seventh-wicket partnership for India in Brisbane, scoring 58 runs in 1991.

“Outstanding application and belief by Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur. This is what Test cricket is all about. Washy top composure on debut and tula parat maanla re Thakur,” tweeted regular skipper Virat Kohli while praising the duo.

Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini and debutant T Natajan then contributed with 13, five and 1 respectively as India got all out for 336.

For Australia, Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped five wickets while conceding 57 runs. Cummins and Starc picked two wickets each while off-spinner Nathan Lyon, playing his 100th Test, scalped one wicket.

Australia then batted for five overs before the Stumps as they swelled their lead to over 50 with two days play still remaining in the match.

Brief scores: Australia 21/0 (David Warner 20*, Marcus Harris 1*, Washington Sundar 0/3) & 369 all out; India 336 all out (Shardul Thakur 67, Washington Sundar 62; Josh Hazlewood 5/57)

New Delhi: The Indian cricket board has said that it would deal and communicate directly with the state associations and not with any player agents in case of individual players wishing to register themselves for the Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction for the 2021 season.

The deadline for franchises to name their retentions from previous season is January 20 whereas the deadline for players without contracts to make online submission for IPL 2021 player auction agreements is February 4. The final deadline for the originals sent by post will be accepted until February 12.

The mini-auction is likely to be held on February 16.

“Please note that, at this stage of the process, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) will only deal directly with the state associations and at no time will have any communication with player agents or managers. Any failure by a player to abide by this will (unless BCCI in its sole discretion decides otherwise) result in the player’s name being withdrawn with immediate effect from the IPL 2021 auction register and/or IPL 2021 auction list (as appropriate),” stated the BCCI in a letter to state associations.

The onus has been put on the state body to give name of the players who want to participate in the auctions.

“Registration for this season will be via an online IPL auction registration system. A unique password and login will be sent to you in a separate email. Please note the password should be changed once you have logged in for the first time and not to be shared with players,” the letter to state bodies states.

“Once logged in you will be asked to register all interested players (details on the procedure can be found in the attached user manual for state associations),” it adds.

“When the above registration is initiated by the state association, it will generate an email to the player with their login details so they can complete the registration process.”

“Once registered, in order to express their interest in playing in the IPL 2021, the player should login to the online registration system. They will be required to complete all the fields and download and complete the IPL 2021 player auction agreement. Once completed the agreement must be uploaded back to the online registration system and the original sent or delivered to their respective state association. Please note physical signature of player is required on original auction agreement.”

The BCCI has also set certain norms for under-19 players willing to feature in the auctions. It says that the player needs to be registered as a player with a state body and should have played at least one first-class or list A match.

“An Indian under-19 player may only register for the IPL 2021 player auction if the player is registered as a player with a state association and has played in at least one match in either first-class cricket or List A cricket. For the 2021 season, an u-19 player is one who was born on or after 1 April 2002,” the BCCI stated.

The BCCI also put a condition for uncapped player who has retired from domestic cricket, saying that the player would need approval from it.

“Any uncapped player who has retired from domestic cricket, can only submit his auction agreement for player registration after getting written approval from BCCI,” said the statement.

Sydney: Even as authorities at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) are investigating reports from the Indian team that pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were subjected to racist comments, they have received another complaint from an Indian fan who alleged that a security officer on duty at the SCG told him to “go back to where you belong”.

Krishna Kumar, who lives in Sydney, has lodged an official complaint saying he was targeted after attempting to bring four banners into the ground on the fifth day on Monday. The banners had anti-racism messages like “Rivalry is good, racism is not”, “No racism mate”, “Brown inclusion matters” and “Cricket Australia — more diversity please”.

A report in the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) said that Kumar was stopped at the gate for not being allowed to take one of his banners which the security believed was bigger in size. He then asked he wanted to speak to a security supervisor.

A security official then asked him to leave, he said.

“He told me, ‘If you need to address this matter, go back to where you belong’. It was a very small banner. I made it out of my kids’ paper roll,” Kumar was quoted as saying by SMH.

Kumar was asked to leave the banners in his car.

“After having to empty out his bag in a lengthy check and being shouted at aggressively by the mid-ranking security staffer as he was ordered through a metal detector, Mr Kumar reported that, when he finally took his seat in Bay 11 of the Victor Trumper Stand, more security was added to the area,” said the report. “They included a female guard of Indian origin to monitor, he believes, if he was ‘using any other language’.”

Brisbane: Rain washed out the final session of the second day of the fourth and final Test at the Gabba here on Saturday with India going to stumps at 62 for two in reply to Australia’s 369 in the first innings.

India lost both their openers early as they went to tea at 62 for the loss of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma’s wickets before heavy downpour caused a deluge in the outfield.
While rain stopped, the groundstaff could not drain off the water and make the ground fit for resumption of play.

Play will resume half an hour early on the third day to make up for the lost overs.

Both the Indian wickets fell in the second session.

Shubman Gill was caught at second slip by Steve Smith off the bowling of Pat Cummins when the team score was 11 while Rohit Sharma, who looked good for his 74-ball 44, was caught at long on off the bowling of Nathan Lyon after adding 49 for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 369 in their first innings before lunch.

The hosts lost their last five wickets for 58 runs.

Pace bowlers T Natarajan and Shardul Thakur, and off-spinner Washington Sundar took three wickets each.

Resuming at the overnight 274/5, Australia lost Tim Paine (50) at 311 and then Cameron Green (47) at 313. Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc added 39 for the ninth wicket.

Brief scores: Australia 369 (M Labuschagne 108, T Paine 50, C Green 47; T Natarajan 3/78, W Sundar 3/89, S Thakur 3/94) vs India 62/2 (Rohit Sharma 44)

Brisbane: The incredible underdog fairytale of Thangarasu Natarajan got better with his twin strikes on debut headlining a commendable effort from an inexperienced Indian bowling attack, which reduced Australia to 274 for 5 despite a stylish hundred from Marnus Labuschagne on the opening day of the final Test here.

The Indian attack, with a collective experience of 3 Tests and 10 balls and 11 wickets in its kitty, was pitted against a batting line-up with 59 hundreds.

After 87 overs, the two Tamil Nadu rookies Natarajan (20-2-63-2) and Washington Sundar (2-4-63-1) could hold their heads high for a lion-hearted effort on a good batting pitch in the absence of the injured Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah.

If tall off-spinner Washington set up a nice little trap to get rid of Steve Smith (36 off 77 balls), Natarajan forced centurion Labuschagne (108 off 204 balls) and Matthew Wade (47 off 85 balls) to miscue their pull-shots after a 113-run stand which threatened to put India in a spot.

At stumps, Tim Paine (38) and Cameron Green (28) had added 61 runs for the sixth wicket and the visitors would need a few quick wickets to keep the first innings total within a manageable range.

The distance between Palayampatti, a non-descript village in Tamil Nadu’s Salem, to Australia’s modern city Brisbane is 9035 km on a google map.

But add the hardships of a daily wager mother trying to put food on table, being called for suspect action early in his career, not being privileged enough to get a paternity leave (his daughter is already three months old), it’s a million miles emotionally that Team India’s favourite “Nattu” has traversed.

Getting Labuschagne, who was on a rampage, with a short delivery ensured that Australia didn’t finish the day with a score close to 350.

For someone, who was supposed to be a net bowler, India’s Test Cap No 300, did well enough on the first day despite not exactly being a natural. He also knows that he doesn’t have the express pace to trouble batsmen (his average speed is 130 plus).

He bowled full during his first two spells and made the length shorter when the ball got old and that’s how he induced Wade and Labuschagne to go for those pull shots.

Nobody would have blamed a Natarajan or a Shardul or “leader of the attack” Mohammed Siraj (19-8-51-1), all of whom toiled manfully throughout their multiple spells in a battle of unequals.

The inexperience was palpable as Thakur (18-5-67-1) bowled a lot of full pitched deliveries which Labuschagne pounced on in the second and third sessions during an innings that had nine boundaries.

If all the injuries weren’t enough, Navdeep Saini (7.5 overs) now seems to be in trouble as he has sustained a groin niggle moments after his skipper Ajinkya Rahane dropped a dolly at gully when Labuschagne was on 37.

By far, Australia’s most consistent batsman in the series, Labuschagne batted in two gears during the day.

In the first session, he faced 82 balls and sedately moved to 19 but in the next 113 balls, scored another 82 runs to reach his fifth hundred in 195 balls.

He trusted the bounce, hit some lovely drives and was also ready to pull anything that was short.

During his partnership with Smith, the former Australian skipper was the aggressor but Washington, a specialist batsman till 2016 and now a frontline off-spinner, with the help of his seniors — skipper Rahane and his deputy Rohit Sharma — laid a beautiful trap.

Washington had bowled three maiden overs prior to lunch and the fidgety Smith, who is always looking to get a move on, fell for the leg trap that was set for him.

Rohit stationed himself at short mid-wicket for a whip that Smith plays on the on-side.

They were banking on the extra bounce that they had seen Washington generate with the white ball.

The plan worked as Smith flicked one straight into Rohit’s hands just few minutes after the lunch.

Having lost four of their key players (Bumrah, Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Hauma Vihari) due to various injuries, Rahane couldn’t have lost a worst toss as Tim Paine elected to bat.

The new-look Indian bowling line-up kept it steady at the onset removing openers David Warner and Marcus Harris in the first session.

That Australia forced a half-fit Warner (1) to play was evident when he had no apparent footwork while trying to drive an angular delivery from Siraj, which was brilliantly snapped by an agile Rohit diving to his right.

It could be seen that Warner, after his groin injury, was still finding it difficult to stretch his front-foot and get to the pitch of the delivery.

Thakur, whose debut against West Indies ended in a nightmare after bowling only 10 deliveries, achieved success, bowling the 11th one in the Test arena.

It was a gentle outswing, an inswing for left-handed Harris (5), who instinctively clipped it straight to debutant Sundar at square leg.

Kolkata: Making a poor start to the new year, the Odisha cricket team lost three T20 matches on a trot after going down to Tamil Nadu in its third match in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy here at the Eden gardens on Thursday.

Odisha notched a below par target of 132 to Tamil Nadu which they surpassed with ease with five overs and eight wickets to spare.

The state team kick-started its season in the elite domestic T20 tournament organized by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) among the teams from Ranji Trophy from January 10, 2020, when they lost to Bengal by nine wickets at the Jadavpur University ground in Kolkata.

The visitors only managed to score 113 runs on the board in their stipulated 20 overs and the opponents Bengal overcame the target with almost eight overs to spare and at the loss of only one wicket.

Only three Odisha batsmen (Aditya Rout-11, Rajesh Dhuper-37, Ankit Yadav-32) managed to put up runs in double digits while all others perished to a fine bowling display by the Bengal team.

In the second encounter, Odisha was pitted against Hyderabad at the same Jadavpur Campus ground on January 14, but they lost the contest by only six runs.

Batting first, Hyderabad posted a total of 153 runs at the loss of eight wickets. Odisha could only manage to score 147 at the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.

At present, Odisha is at the bottom of the Elite Group B with zero points. While the chances of making it to the quarter final are slim, it still has two more matches; against Jharkhand on January 16 and against Assam on January 18.

New Delhi: The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has decided to employ Olympians and Paralympians as coaches and assistant coaches at its various National Centers of Excellence (NCOEs) in an attempt to recognise the achievements of country’s sporting heroes.

The employment process, already underway, creates vacancies for 23 assistant coaches and four coaches. Olympians and Paralympians are eligible to apply as assistant coaches and medal winners can directly apply for the position of coaches which is a Group A position, said SAI in a statement on Thursday.

“To ensure that athletes who are still in active participants in sporting competitions can continue with their sporting career, Olympians and Paralympians appointed as coaches would be allowed to continue their sports training as long as they are active sportspersons and maintain desired performance at the international level.”

The selected coaches will also need to pursue the diploma in sports coaching conducted by NSNIS Patiala, if they have already not taken the course previously.

Speaking about the decision, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “It is a constant endeavour of the sports ministry and SAI to recognise the achivements of our sporting heroes, as well as to ensure that they lead a life of dignity and comfort.”

“This decision to employ Olympians and Paralympians is the government’s way of appreciating their service to the nation, as well as to attract the best talent from the world of sport to coaching. Coaches are the backbone of the sporting ecosystem and we need to employ the best sportspersons as coaches also,” he added.

The detailed advertisement regarding eligibility, educational/professional qualification age, etc. and application form is available on the SAI website.

Team India Denied Basic Facilities In Brisbane Hotel, BCCI Intervenes

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team, which landed in Brisbane for the fourth and final Test against Australia, was in for a shock on Tuesday as it was lodged at a hotel which “lacked basic facilities”, prompting an intervention from the BCCI top brass.

It is learnt that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah and CEO Hemang Amin have all got in touch with their Cricket Australia counterparts after complaints reached them and have been assured that the the Indian contingent will be made to feel comfortable from here on. The series is tied 1-1 currently.

“There was no room service or house keeping facilities. The gym is very basic and not of international standards and the swimming pool can’t be accessed. This wasn’t what they were promised when they checked in,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

India will be playing the fourth Test in the Queensland capital from January 15 where the surge of COVID-19 cases and a border lockdown with New South Wales has led to a strict hotel quarantine for the Ajinkya Rahane-led team.

Asked if the players were being allowed to mingle, the Board source said: “Yes, they have been provided with a team room and are allowed to meet each other inside the hotel.”

When asked whether the team had protested with the hotel authorities, the source said: “When the manager enquired about how these things are not being taken care of, all they said was, ‘the rule applies to both Indian and Australian teams. There is no one team that has been subjected to hard quarantine rules.’

However, the Indian contingent is confident that both Ganguly and Shah will be able to amicably resolve the matter as the injury-ravaged team prepares for the series-decider.

Australia had won the opener in Adelaide inside three days, before India came back to clinch the second Test in Melbourne. The two sides shared the honours in an engrossing third Test in which India produced a gutsy performance in pursuit of a mammoth 407.

Bangkok: Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy have withdrawn from the Thailand Open after testing positive for coronavirus.

“Two Indian players, Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy, have tested positive for Covid-19. Both players have withdrawn from the tournament and have been isolated in a hospital for a minimum of 10 days,” the Badminton Association of India (BAI) confirmed on their official Twitter handle.

“BAI is in constant touch with BWF, team management, players and organiser,” it added.

Saina returned positive in her third round of Covid-19 test on Monday. She was slated to take on Kisona Selvaduray of Malaysia in her opening round contest on Tuesday who has now been given a walkover.

Prannoy, on the other hand, was slated to take on Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in his opening round contest.

This is the second time that Saina and Prannoy have tested positive for Covid-19. Last month along with Parupalli Kashyap, the players had tested positive during Gurusaidutt’s wedding in Hyderabad. All of them served quarantine period and tested negative for Covid-19 before arriving in Bangkok.

Saina, 30, had recently raised concerns over the fitness of the athletes after physios and trainers were restricted from meeting the badminton players during the entirety of their Thailand tour. However, the rules that have been put in place by the Badminton World Federation and BAT stated that it was only for the first three days that players could not meet their support staff until the start of the training period.

The Olympic medallist last participated in the All England Open in March last year and Tuesday’s game was supposed to be her first since the outbreak of coronavirus.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) put out some interesting stats about Dravid and tweeted: “More than 10,000 runs in Tests and ODIs, 194 fifty-plus scores, most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper, most balls faced in Test cricket, only player to be involved in two 300-plus ODI partnerships. Happy birthday to the incredible Rahul Dravid.”

“Wishing Rahul Dravid – former India captain & one of the finest batsmen to have ever graced the game – a very happy birthday,” tweeted BCCI.

Dravid was named the ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2004.

The former India captain, who currently heads the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, was bestowed with the Arjuna award in 1998, while he received the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in 2004 and 2013 respectively.

Sydney: Contrasting half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara, followed by an exemplary display of grit and determination by Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin helped India draw the third Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Chasing a mammoth target of 407, India reached 334/5 after batting for 131 overs before both the teams decided to shake hands on the final day of the Test match. Vihari, who batted with a sore hamstring throughout the course of his innings, showed great resilience and remained unbeaten on 23 after facing 161 deliveries. He was supported brilliantly by Ashwin who also suffered a lot of blows on his body but didn’t throw away his wicket and remained not on 39 from 128 deliveries.

Earlier, Pant and Pujara shared a 148-run partnership for the fifth wicket after the visitors lost skipper Ajinkya Rahane (4) very early in the day. The duo scored runs at a brisk pace and in fact, not only put India in a position to draw the Test, but also gave the visitors an unlikely hope of an improbable win.

But Pant — after scoring 97 runs off just 118 balls with the help of 12 fours and three sixes — got out against Nathan Lyon in the second session and provided Australia an opening. The game tilted further in Australia’s way when Pujara — who scored his second half-century of the match during his 77-run knock — got out bowled, courtesy a peach of a delivery by Josh Hazlewood.

However, it was then that Vihari and Ashwin came into their own and first helped India end the second session at 280/5 on the final day.

The experienced pair continued to show great character during the final session as well and survived some nervy moments during the course of their unbeaten 62-run partnership which saw the team end the match in a historic draw. Both the batters batted for more than three hours each during the course of their innings and declined Australia with an opportunity to go 2-1 up in the ongoing four-Test series.

Openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill also made notable contributions in the second innings by scoring 52 and 31 runs respectively and helped India gain some confidence as they began their chase of the gigantic target on Day Four.

Australia had posted 338 in their first innings and then bowled out India for 244, thus attaining a 94-run lead. The hosts declared their second innings at 312/6, setting a 407-run target.

Australia had won the first Test by eight wickets in Adelaide while India registered a stunning comeback in Melbourne, winning the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets.

The series, currently tied at 1-1, will now be decided in the final Test beginning Friday at The Gabba in Brisbane.

Brief scores: Australia 338 & 312/6 dec vs India 244 & 334/5 (Rishabh Pant 97, Cheteshwar Pujara 77, Hanuma Vihari 23*, Ravichandran Ashwin 39*; Josh Hazlewood 2/39)

Sydney: Cricket Australia on Monday confirmed, the fourth and final Test of the ongoing series between Australia and India will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from January 15 to 19.

Over the last two weeks, there had been doubts over the final Test after reports emerging about Team India expressing their reluctance to travel to Brisbane due to harsher bio-security protocols.

However, CA interim CEO Nick Hockley on Monday confirmed that the Indian team has agreed to travel to Brisbane.

“We have been working closely with Queensland Health to ensure our strong biosecurity plans guarantees the fourth Test at The Gabba is played safely,” Hockley said in a statement.

“Throughout the season, we have developed a strong track record for a safe and responsible return to sport thanks to our well-established bio-security protocols, the ongoing support from public health officials and the incredible hard work of so many people across Australian cricket.

“I want to thank the Queensland Government for their cooperation and willingness to working closely with CA and the BCCI so we can deliver the fourth Test as planned, but more importantly delivering on a plan that places the safety and wellbeing of the players, match officials and the wider community as a top priority,” he added.

Cricket Australia also informed that 50 per cent of the total crowd capacity will be allowed at the Gabba during the Test match.

“Acting on the advice of the Queensland Health and the Queensland Government, Cricket Australia and Stadiums Queensland are working together to ensure the safety of patrons attending the Vodafone Brisbane Test on January 15, with a crowd capacity of 50 per cent at The Gabba,” CA statement read.

Stirling Hinchliffe, Queensland Sport Minister, said Queenslanders were looking forward to Australia playing India in the fourth Test at The Gabba.

“Covid-19 pandemic has made this anything but an ordinary Test to prepare for. I want to thank Cricket Australia and the BCCI for working closely with the Chief Health Officer and the Queensland Government to make this a Covid-safe Test,” Hinchliffe said.

“With the extraordinary spirit of cooperation behind the scenes, I’m confident we’re going to witness a great Test at the Gabba this week,” he added.
