Hyderabad Police Commissioner C. V. Anand said the workers were asleep in rooms on the first while scrap material including plastic, newspapers and other scrap items were stored on the ground floor. Someone alerted the police after a gas cylinder exploded due to the fire.
According to sources, the bus, on its way to Bhubaneswar from Kolkata, met with the accident on National Highway-16 near Bhandaripokhari.
Sources said ‘Dola Melana’ or ‘Radha-Krishna Melana’ utsav is celebrated in a grand way in the area every year during Dola Purnima. Attractive fireworks are demonstrated during the procession of the Melana. This time things did not go as planned, resulting in the mishap, sources added.
It is, however, suspected that though initially it was suspected that around 6 youths were in the group that went to take bath, the discovery of 10 pairs of clothes and an equal number of footwear pairs has led to speculations that there could be more people in the group.
Locals present at the spot rescued the four youths from the car and rushed them to the DHH in an ambulance. However, two of the youths were declared dead by the doctors.
As per reports, the mishap took place when they were inside the house. A fire broke out and engulfed the house leaving them critically injured.
When asked, the Block Education Officer said that Transport and Police officials will be asked to conduct a probe into the incident and find out the fitness, ownership and other details of the vehicle.
The victims were aged between 21 and 24 years. The police said that they were all students in the Greater Toronto and Montreal areas.
None of the passengers or crew members were injured, they said, adding that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has started an investigation.
A truck was torched by angry locals near Saralakani square on NH-53 in Sambalpur city after it ran over a man who was on a morning walk on Saturday morning.
Railway officials rushed to the spot and launched a rescue and restoration operation. The team has been pressed to clear the tracks.
Expressing grief over the loss of lives in the mishap, the CM also announced Rs 3 lakh ex-gratia for the next of the kin of the deceased.
Though the identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained, they are said to be the contractual worker engaged in the construction work at the bridge, Singh added.
As per sources, the marriage party members were returning in a van to Bargarh from Sonepur after attending the function when their vehicle rammed into a tree near Badakarle village under Rampur police station in Sonepur.
The police and the fire department personnel rushed to the spot and carried out operations along with the local villagers, to rescue trapped workers from inside the mine. According to the officials, six labourers, who were trapped inside, have been been rescued so far.
