Bhawanipatna: Hundreds of Dongria Kondh and Jharania tribals of Kalahandi and Rayagada districts residing at Niyamgiri hill area on Saturday took out a rally named ‘Jana Garjan Samabesh’ with their traditional weapons demanding complete dismantling of Vedanta Alumina plant from Lanjigarh.

The tribals under the banner of Niyamgiri Surakhya Samiti, an outfit protesting the refinery unit, gathered at Jagannathpur and later staged a demonstration in front of the company at Lanjigarh raising anti-Vedanta slogans.

They alleged poisonous gas emanating from the plant is causing pollution to Niyamgiri. The industrial waste also caused the stream water polluted thereby posing serious threat to the environment and livelihood of the local people, the activists said. The matter has been taken to the notice of government several times, but in vain, they alleged.

However, the tribals warned the government of locking the company gates, if it turns a blind eye to their demands.
