UGC eyeing to curb ragging through film-making

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: With an aim to prohibit, prevent and eliminate the scourge of ragging, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to launch a film-making competition to promote a debate on the issue and its menace.

The UGC on Friday issued letters to vice-chancellors of all universities and higher educational institutions regarding the launch of a National University Film Making Competition to aware the students about the ill effects of ragging.

The regulations are mandatory and all institutions are required to take necessary steps for its implementation, regulations and ensure its strict compliance. The UGC has also taken several proactive steps including effective launch of Media Campaign for preventing ragging.

Films in ragging are also uploaded on UGC website for use by higher education Institutions.

The Universities can promote its students and faculty to develop films in ragging. The entries could be from the University Departments, and affiliated Colleges. The Universities, through an internal selection procedure will select the 3 best entries to be sent to UGC.

The films may be documentary/fiction films of duration of about 5-10 minutes. The UGC will constitute an Expert committee to select 3 best films from the entries submitted by the Universities and give an award of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh, and Rs 2 lakh for the lst, 2nd and 3rd best film respectively .
