Cuttack: A Special Court here today rejected the bail applications of a doctor couple — Surendranath Senapati and his wife Diptirani Samanta — who were arrested yesterday on charges of corruption, forgery for cheating, deceit and criminal conspiracy.
Vigilance judge RS Hota also rejected the bail application of a local pharmaceutical company proprietor, Sudhansu Das, who too was arrested along with the doctor couple.
The three were booked under several sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sections 120B, 468 and 471 of the IPC.
Senapati was officiating as the head of radiation oncology at Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre here and his wife was working as an assistant professor of medical oncology at the centre.
All the three accused were sent to Choudwar Circle jail yesterday.
Investigating a disproportionate assets (DA) case against the couple, vigilance sleuths found out that the doctors, between May 2013 and December 2015, prescribed “costly and less known” anti-cancer medicines, prepared by Das’ firm, to patients, who were covered under the Odisha State Treatment Fund (OSTF) and the Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojna (BKKY) schemes.
While drugs of the same composition of reputed companies were available in the market for a more affordable price, the couple asked them to purchase the costly medicines prepared by Das’ farm, resulting in early exhaustion of the patients’ funds under the welfare schemes.
