It is suspected that Kabita has been murdered by her husband Karunakar Mahalik. She had married Karunakar recently after the death of her first husband. The suspect Karunakar is reportedly missing after the incident.
A man and his two relatives were arrested for killing his wife and thereafter setting the body on fire with the intention to destroy evidence in Bolangir district.
