New Delhi: GMR Group today announced that the third 350-MW unit of its Kamalganga thermal power project in Odisha has started commercial operation.

"The third 350-MW unit of the Kamalganga thermal power project at Dhenkanal in Odisha was declared commercially operational today," GMR said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges.

The first 350-MW unit of the plant became commercially operational on April 30, 2013 and the second unit on November 12, 2013.

"With this the combined generation capacity of the plant has reached 1,050 MW and that of GMR Group has touched 2,485.6 MW," the company said in the filing.

"With the commissioning of the third unit we have completed the first phase of the project. We will begin work on the second and final phase of the project very soon," R V Sheshan, Managing Director, GMR Energy Ltd.

Earlier this month, the group forayed into the railway sector, winning a construction package worth Rs 267 crore, alongwith partners, including Tata projects, from Rail Vikas Nigam.

A consortium led by the company with partners such as Tata Projects and Kalindee Rail Nirman would carry out the project which includes construction of roadbed, bridges, track linking, outdoor S&T works, OHE (Over Head Equipments) and general electrical works from Jhansi to Erich Road.
