Puri: Scrapped currency notes still continue to find way into several religious shrines in Odisha. After Puri Srimandir, now old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes worth Rs 12,000 were recovered from the donation box at Kakatpur's Mangala temple in Puri district.

Official sources said the donation box of the temple was opened after a gap of 18 months due to some coordination in the management of the temple trust.

The donation box was opened on Saturday following directions from Endowment Commission. Besides the Rs 12,000 in demonitized currency, cash to the tune of Rs 11 lakh was also recovered from the donation box.

"The donation was opened in presence of magistrate, temple trust members and other officials. Till new trust is formed, I will discharge duties as an interim trustee. The second donation box will be opened on July 11," said Kakatpur Tehsildar, Rosalin Das.
