Bhubaneswar: The School and Mass education department has started processing to shut the schools registering low attendance in the State. As many as 195 primary schools, which have been witnessing less than five students for last couple of years, have been served show-cause notice.

“Action will be taken after the concerned school authorities replied on the notice why the schools would not be shut down”, School and Mass Education minister Debi Mishra said.

The move to close the schools came after the government continued to face much hurdles to maintain them as per the guidelines of Right to Education Act. A survey was conducted in this regard to indentify the primary study centers in the State registering low attendance. As many as 195 such schools have been traced, Mishra added.

However, he clarified that the students and teachers of the schools will be shifted to nearby school within a radius of one/two km.
