Depression to intensify into severe cyclonic storm, pre-Cyclone watch for West Bengal

The IMD has issued a pre-cyclone watch for West Bengal as a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by May 26. IMD scientist Umashankar Dash noted the system will move northeastwards, intensifying over time.

The low-pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards and now lays as a well-marked low pressure over the west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday.

As per reports, no large change is expected in Odisha. The IMD informed that the maximum temperature (day temperature) is likely to rise by 2 to 3 degrees C during the next 3 days and no large change is expected thereafter at many places over the districts of Odisha.

IMD Bhubaneswar scientist, Umashankar Dash informed that the system is likely to continue to move northeastwards and concentrate into a Depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24, 2024. 

“Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move northeastwards, intensify further into a cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal by 25th May morning,” tweeted Dash.

According to Dash, the cyclonic storm would move nearly northwards and reach Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by  May 26 evening as a severe cyclonic storm.
