Hosts India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in the first game of the three-match ODI series at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed in the pre-match press conference that promising Shubman Gill would open the batting with him.

Rohit said that he was not going to take anything from Ishan Kishan. Kishan smashed his maiden ODI double hundred against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram last month.

In Kishan’s absence from the playing XI, KL Rahul will don the keeping gloves.

Rohit also said that India would give preference to those players who have done well in the ODI format. As per the skipper’s indication, India’s Mr 360 degree batsman Suryakumar Yadav is also most likely to miss out from the final squad.

“The problem happens when we start comparing different formats. We have to look at who all have done well in ODI cricket for us. What situation they have done well in - they have been under pressure, and they have gone in, batted and scored runs. All those things you need to take into account before making that call,” said Rohit.

“I do understand the form as well. The form is important, but the format is also important. The 50-over format is a different format, slightly longer than the T20 format, and the guys who have performed in ODIs will definitely get a run. We are very clear in what we want to do,” he added.

Meanwhile, in experienced Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj remain the best bet for India as fast bowlers. It remains to be seen if either of Umran Malik or Arshdeep Singh get a chance.

India’s probable XI

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj.
