Prafulla Mallik’s suspension unjust, grievances must be heard: BJD leader Padmanabh Behera
Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Padmanabh Behera has openly expressed his reservations over the suspension of veteran leader Prafulla Mallik, who faced disciplinary action for his remarks in the media.
Behera said that such punitive measures were not the right course of action and emphasised that persuasion and dialogue should be prioritized over punishment.
“I am not in favour of strict action. Anyone who is dissatisfied within the party should be counselled and convinced. We must ensure that their grievances are heard and addressed rather than penalising them,” Behera remarked.
The veteran leader pointed out that there is a clear difference between managing a party while in power and running it while in opposition.
According to him, several leaders and workers who had high expectations are now expressing disappointment as those expectations remain unfulfilled. But these concerns should be shared internally within the party structure and not aired outside. Maintaining discipline and unity is crucial at this stage, he added.
Behera also reflected on the BJD’s electoral defeat, acknowledging shortcomings in strategy. He admitted that the party failed to effectively manage election operations and counter the opposition’s misinformation campaigns, which significantly contributed to the loss.
We must rectify these mistakes. Strengthening internal communication, building collective discipline, and addressing members’ concerns are essential to regaining people’s trust, Behera stressed.

Speaking to the media, Behera said, “Prafulla Bhai gave some statement to the media. But this is not the discipline. One must not come up with negative comments in public, which will affect the party.”
“I believe such a punitive measure is not the right course of action. Rather, the senior leaders should be counselled and convinced,” Behera added.
