Hospital ceiling collapses on newborn and mother in Odisha

A ceiling collapse at Jatani Community Health Centre in Khordha injured a newborn baby and his mother. The accident occurred early Friday morning, causing panic. Both the mother and child were moved to another room and are safe. The family is demanding action against the contractor responsible for the hospital's redevelopment.

In a heart-wrenching incident, a portion of the ceiling collapsed on a newborn baby and his mother. The horrifying incident happened at the Jatani Community Health Centre in Khordha.

According to sources, the accident occurred at around 04:30 AM on Friday when the mother was asleep with her one-day-old son.

According to the victim woman's mother, a sudden loud cry woke her up and upon inspection, she saw that 3 tiles had collapsed over her daughter and grandchild while another tile was about to fall. Under the impact, the IV drip which was administered to her daughter snapped out of her hand. She immediately let out a cry for help. 

Upon hearing the loud screams, panic-stricken, Basant Sahu, the husband of the patient rushed to the scene. 

He said, “This is definitely a blunder made by the previous government of Odisha and this could have turned into a much fatal accident”.

One of the ASHA Didis at the hospital said, "I received a call at 5 in the morning about the ceiling collapsing on the newborn child and his mother. I was told that there was some bleeding in the victim woman's hand and abdomen. Both the child and mother were shifted to a different room and are safe, doctors and nurses immediately checked up on them”. 

According to sources, the hospital was redeveloped under the 5T initiative of the previous government. 

The family has demanded strict action against the contractor under whose supervision the remodelling and reconstruction had taken place.

No comments were received from the hospital authorities in this regard.
