A fire broke out in a maintenance train engine near Joranda Road station in Dhenkanal on Thursday.

Flames and black smoke were seen billowing out of the engine. However, the cause of the fire has not been ascertained immediately. There are no reports about damage, loss and casualties from the railways authorities.

As per reports, the engine was coming from Raja Athagarh when the fire broke out and later spread to some bogies. It is suspected that the fire might be an outcome of an electric short circuit in its generator.

Sources said, as many as 12 officials were inside the engine, but they managed to escape before the fire broke out.

Black smoke coming out of the train spread about a five km radius.

A team of fire service personnel rushed to the spot and started a firefighting exercise. The power supply was shut down in the area while train services on the line were halted for several hours.
