November 10 is observed every year as World Public Transport Day with the intention of raising awareness about the negative effects of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment that the increase in the density of traffic is causing. It is also observed to encourage people to make more use of public transportation so that fuel is conserved.

So, how can you reduce pollution that is caused due to transportation?

Opt for driving only when necessary

Driving less can be one option that is practical and can be followed with a few changes in routine. Whenever possible take a walk or a bike (cycle) to reach a place. Opting for public transit is also another good option along with carpooling with colleagues or friends or sharing ride services. Planning your trips in advance will help you to complete all the important tasks that are on the same road or in the vicinity in one trip thereby reducing fuel consumption.

Choosing fuel-efficient vehicles

Always try to pick a fuel-efficient vehicle whether you are choosing a car or a bike. Such vehicles emit low greenhouse gases and thus can help the environment. These vehicles also help you save on fuel. Opt for electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or cleaner-burning gasoline vehicles that are less polluting and more efficient.

Never use vehicles for idling away

Idling of trucks, school buses, and cars unnecessarily increases air pollution, leads to excess engine wear and tear, and also wastage of fuel . Earlier vehicles needed a bit of heating up during winters so drivers had a habit of warming them up by starting the engine a few minutes before they were ready to go. However, modern vehicles are very efficient and do not need any warming up.

Hence, you must avoid keeping the vehicles on for a long time before it is time to go.
