  • India celebrates National Nutrition Week 2023 between Sept 1 and Sept 7.
  • The theme this year is Healthy Diet Gawing Affordable for All.

National Nutrition Week was established by the American Nutrition Week in 1975 with the purpose of creating awareness among the public about how nutritious and healthy food can help them lead a good, healthy, and active life.

India celebrates its National Nutrition Week from 1 to 7 September and this year the theme is “Health Diet Gawing Affordable for all.”

In India, the first related initiative was started in 1980 when the government launched a few activities to make people aware of healthy nutrition and to motivate and educate them about the food that plays a key role in good health and longevity.

Significance of National Nutrition Week and the theme this year

Irrespective of your wealth condition, it is the right of every Indian citizen to have access to good quality and nutritious food. But more often there is a lack of awareness regarding the type of foods that are good for health.

Of course, a few food items like nuts or exotic vegetables/fruits may be out of the reach of common people, but there are so many cheaper options of food available that can suffice the nutritional needs of a person.

The theme of this year focuses on making people aware of such food items and also on establishing an arrangement that makes affordable and nutritious foods viable for everyone.

Educating people about how poor nutrition can cause diseases and certain lifelong conditions is one way of celebrating this week. Malnutrition is a global concern and it can be both ways- over nutrition and under nutrition.

Just as people or children in villages like Melghat suffer from diseases due to under nutrition, in most of urban cities, over nutrition is the cause of weight gain and related issues.

Unfortunately, even those who are highly educated are not aware of this over nutrition problem and that is why celebrating and promoting this thought of National Nutrition Week is so important.
