That is why it is called Tritiya as Tritiya means third while Akshay means eternal.

Precious metals and things are purchased on Akshay Tritiya

It is believed that precious metals like gold and silver double in number and stay eternally in the family if bought on Akshay Tritiya. That is why it is a custom in many Hindu families to buy gold on this auspicious day. It is also believed that purchasing precious gems, gold, or silver, or investing in land brings fortune and prosperity.

People also visit various spiritual destinations on this day and offer puja and prayers. In India, people flock to a few major spiritual places like Kashi Vishweshwar Temple and ghats of the Ganges in Varanasi, Jagannath Temple in Puri, Kalighat Temple and Dakshineshwar Kali Temple in West Bengal, Siddhivinayak Temple and Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai, Dwarka in Gujarat, Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Krishna Temple and Ashta Mathas in Udupi.

Various rituals are performed at these temples on Akshay Tritiya. Apart from that many people also prefer donating money to charity institutions or old age homes and orphanages to increase their punya which can multiply since it is done on Akshay Tritiya. Mantra chanting, offering bhog, and distributing clothes are also some of the activities performed on this day.

The Hindu shastra says that one must avoid saying harsh words on this auspicious day and follow a satvik life. Maintaining celibacy, avoiding smoking and drinking, and insulting others are some of the don'ts that you must follow.
