Andaz Apna Apna 2 might not happen with Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Rajkumar Santoshi! Know why

1994 Hindi movie 'Andaz Apna Apna' achieved cult status for its timeless humour and memorable characters. Helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the movie starred Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karishma Kapoor, Shakti Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal. While movie lovers are still in awe of the iconic characters Amar and Prem in the movie, the recent hint dropped by the Ghazni actor about 'Andaz Apna Apna 2' has elevated the excitement among all. However, a recent report suggests that the sequel might not happen with Aamir, Salman and Rajkumar.

During a live session on Instagram on his birthday, Aamir responding to a fan's question said that Rajkumar Santoshi is writing the script for the sequel. However, as it is in the initial phase, nothing can be said. Fans, eagerly waiting to see Aamir-Salman together,  were elated by this update. Later, reports were abuzz that the director was writing the script with the original Amar-Prem in mind.

However, it seems there is a hurdle for the sequel with Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Rajkumar Santoshi.

Notably, Andaz Apna Apna was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Vinay Sinha. Initially, the movie tanked at the box office but gained popularity later. Though a commercial failure, the movie got its much-deserved appreciation later.

According to a report in Mid-Day, the movie's rights remain with the late Sinha’s children, Namrata, Amod and Priti.

The report also stated that in 2022, Rajkumar mentioned that he had a concept for the sequel to Andaz Apna Apna. As per sources, Rajkumar is simultaneously writing the script for the sequel while currently, he is working on Lahore 1947.

The hype around its sequel is nothing new. Earlier in 2019, rumours were rife that the makers were planning a sequel with Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh. Reportedly, the Sinha family intended to take the brand ahead with stars from the current crop. 

The report quoted a close source as revealing that in 2019 rumours were rife that the producers wanted to make Andaz Apna Apna Reloaded with Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan. While their characters were to be named Amar and Prem, they were to have completely different backgrounds and the story would have no relation with the 1994 original."

Further, the source added, "At the moment, the makers are treading cautiously on the matter. They are undecided whether they want to rope in Aamir and Salman with a top director at the helm, or cast gen-next stars. Regardless, it’s certain that Santoshi cannot make a sequel without the Sinhas’ go-ahead.”

Meanwhile, when the news portal contacted Priti Sinha, she said, "Andaz Apna Apna is a legacy film, and as its rightful owners, we have to be careful about taking it forward. Talks of a sequel have been happening [within my team] for a long time. When it happens, we’ll proudly announce it with everyone.”

She also asserted that only the family can take the brand forward, with a director of their choice.

As the movie will be completing 30 years in November this year, she also mentioned celebrating the 30th anniversary of the cult movie. "Last year, we launched the Andaz Apna Apna memorabilia website and this year too, there’s an idea to celebrate the anniversary of this cult classic,” she said.

However, fans would certainly love to see the original cast in the sequel as well which was obvious from the social media posts.
