Odisha Vigilance officials arrested Medical Officer (Ayush) of Gairabahal Primary Health Centre under Kutra block of Sundargarh district while taking bribe of Rs 4,000 from an auto driver on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Sarada Prasanna Behera.

As per reports, the auto-rickshaw in which passengers were travelling met an accident last week and the driver and the passengers of the vehicle were injured in the mishap.

When the auto driver went to the nearby Gairabahal PHC for treatment and issuance of medical certificate, Behera asked for Rs 12,000 as bribe.

The doctor also reportedly threatened to intimate the local police otherwise which would lead to the cancellation of his driving license.

Finding no option, the driver paid Rs 8,000 bribe to the doctor.

However, he also informed the Vigilance officials about the incident.

Following the incident, the Vigilance officials laid a trap and arrested Behera while accepting the rest of the bribe money on Friday.

The vigilance officials have also conducted a search operation at Behera’s government residence and official chamber.

In this connection, Rourkela Vigilance has registered a case under U/s-7PC (Amendment) Act 2018. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
