Woman jumps into canal with daughter
Bhubaneswar: In a bizarre incident, a woman, in a suicide bid, jumped into the Puri mail canal at Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar with her one-year-old daughter, on Tuesday morning.
Sources said the woman, carrying her daughter jumped into the canal near a siphon at Balianta alongside the National Highway-5.
While some locals, bathing in the canal, rescued the woman, there was no trace of the missing daughter.
The critically injured woman was later rushed to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar while efforts are on by the fire brigade team to trace out the missing child.
Reports said the injured woman, identified as Subhashree Patnaik, had married Satyajit Mohanty in June, 2013. The couple, who works in an Intelligence agency of the Union Home department, was blessed with a girl child who was born on October 27, 2014.
Asked about the incident, the shell-shocked husband said there was a frequent quarrel between him and his wife. The couple had a quarrel on Monday night.
“When I woke up this morning, I found the absence of my wife and daughter. I thought she might have taken the daughter to a nearby temple on the occasion of her birthday. But as she did not turn up after a long time, I went out for a search. In the mean time, I got a phone call from Pahala police outpost under Balianta police station limits asking me to come immediately. After I reached the spot, I came to know about the incident,” Mohanty said.
However, the cause of the suicide attempt by the woman is still not known. Sources in the hospital said her condition has become stable.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case and started investigation into the incident.
