Bhubaneswar: At least seven incidents of mob attack triggered by child-lifting rumours have surfaced from different parts of the state in the past 24 hours.

A mentally-challenged youth was beaten up by locals on suspicion of being a child-lifter at Panchama village under Golanthara police limits on the outskirts of Berhampur in Ganjam district on Tuesday. The youth was wandering in the area when some villagers intercepted him and questioned his whereabouts. On failing to answer properly, they tied him to a tree and thrashed him black and blue. The mob tied his hands and made him walk around the village.

In a similar incident, another man suspected to be a child-lifter was attacked by a mob at Chandipur in Balasore. Although the incident took place on Monday, video of the incident went viral on social media on Tuesday.

In another attack in Jobra area of Cuttack on Tuesday late night, a mentally-disabled youth jumped into Mahanadi river after some locals allegedly attacked him on suspicion of being a child-lifter.

As per reports, some locals started chasing him suspecting him to be child-lifter. The youth in fear of being beaten up, jumped into the Mahanadi river. A team of ODRAF rushed to the spot and rescued the youth. He has been admitted him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

An elderly man was manhandled by a mob, at Kanter village under Dharmagarh police station in Kalahandi district on Tuesday night.

Reports stated that the man was roaming around, when some villagers stopped him and started assaulting him. On getting information, the police rushed to the spot and rescued him.

Another incident came to the fore in Mathura village of Boudh district on Tuesday after some villagers detained a woman suspecting her to be a child-lifter and informed the police. The Boudh police rushed to the spot and rescued the woman.

Similarly two youths were thrashed by locals on suspicion of being child-lifters at Kapasira under Manamunda police limits in Boudh district on Tuesday. They were rescued by the police.
