Islamabad: Five persons were killed and 21 others injured when a blast ripped through a bakery in Nowshera cantonment in northwest Pakistan on Sunday, police said.

The blast triggered a major fire that resulted in the explosion of several gas cylinders, officials told reporters.

Three persons were killed instantly.

Twelve of the injured were taken to a nearby military hospital.

The nature of the blast could not immediately be ascertained.

The bakery on Mall Road is run by security forces and was crowded at the time of the blast.

Several cars and nearby shops were damaged by the explosion.

Fire fighters and rescue workers rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze, officials said.

Earlier, at least seven people were killed and 10 others injured when a bomb planted in a van went off at a bus stop in Mattani area of Peshawar.
