On A Mission: FIDR Leading Efforts to Strengthen Odisha’s Coastal Ecosystem & Climate Resilience

Coastal parts of Odisha, particularly districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Puri, have seen a significant decline in mangrove cover due to frequent cyclones. Mangroves play a very crucial role by being natural barriers against disasters like cyclones. Odisha's mangrove cover now accounts for only 5.17% of India's total, highlighting an urgent need for its conservation. Past cyclones, including the 1999 super cyclone, have caused significant loss of life and economic disruption. In addition to the government’s efforts, tailored measures and community involvement are urgently needed in the Devi estuary to prevent further mangrove depletion. In response to the significant decline in mangrove cover, FIDR a dynamic Social Change Organization operating across five states, including Odisha, is focused on addressing coastal vulnerabilities, through community-driven initiatives like mangrove restoration and sea turtle hatchery management. FIDR has a dedicated cadre of more than 35 skilled individuals, committed to mangrove restoration and sea turtle hatchery management. They also have a passionate team of over 200 coastal area youths, including students, lifeguards, intellectuals, and community volunteers who are driving positive change in our coastal ecosystems. PRESENT ACTIVITIES ON CLIMATE CHANGE Enhancing Coastal Resilience Through Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation And Conservation The organisation enhances coastal resilience by facilitating community based mangrove conservation, empowering marginalized groups, especially women, and creating alternative income opportunities. They raise climate change awareness through youth programs and capacity-building initiatives in schools, promoting sustainable conservation practices. Conservation of Olive Ridley Sea Turtle The vibrant team safeguards Olive Ridley Sea turtles at Rushikulya by coordinating rescue operations, training volunteers, and providing 24/7 support during mass hatching. They also organize clean-up drives to remove debris from nesting sites, ensuring turtle safety and habitat preservation. Conservation of Chilika Ramsar Site The organisation also is engaged in promoting conservation of Chilika Lagoon, a Ramsar convention site, which serves as a vital habitat for numerous bird species. FIDR uses a mobile vehicle that serves as an educational platform on wheels, they then visit villages and schools to create awareness. They also partner with local artists to create murals showcasing the lagoon's biodiversity, instilling community pride and commitment to conservation. Coastal Dune Restoration To restore coastal dunes, individuals associated with FIDR are engaged in planting native vegetation that stabilizes the dunes and supports wildlife. Local communities are involved in planting and maintaining these areas to boost ecosystem resilience. Through climate restoration projects, FIDR helps protect the environment and support local wildlife, and by involving communities, the organization simultaneously promotes awareness to boost and protect coastal ecosystems.
