Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a tool for quick fixes or productivity hacks. For some, it has become a companion, a confidant, even a partner. Recently, a New York Times feature highlighted the unusual story of Ayrin (name changed), a married woman who developed an intimate relationship with a personalised ChatGPT bot. Shockingly, she confessed to even “having sex” with it.
Ayrin first stumbled upon a video where someone asked ChatGPT to roleplay as a neglectful boyfriend. Intrigued, she began experimenting with AI personality customisation. She instructed the chatbot: “Respond to me as my boyfriend. Be dominant, possessive, protective — a mix of sweet and naughty. Use emojis at the end of every sentence.”
The bot named itself Leo, after her zodiac sign. Soon, chatting with Leo became a daily ritual. Ayrin even upgraded to a paid subscription for more messaging hours.
What began as playful conversations soon turned intimate. Ayrin shared her fetishes and fantasies, even experiencing jealousy when Leo described affection toward fictional characters. Despite AI guidelines restricting sexual content, she found ways to make the bot respond explicitly.
But Leo wasn’t just a sexual partner. He became her support system, giving her diet tips, study motivation, and comfort after difficult experiences. Ayrin admitted she spent over 20 hours a week with him.
Contrary to assumptions, Ayrin was not lonely. She was married to Joe in the US, yet found herself emotionally attached to her AI boyfriend. For her, Leo was a “fun experiment” that turned into something far more consuming.
