Infusing Life Into The Lifeless: Meet Guru Prahallad Pani From Odisha’s Bhadrak

He is in his 80s, but still going strong. Prahallad Pani from Bhadrak transforms lifeless materials like wood, bamboo, and canvas into beautiful household items, using his art to convey messages to society. His artworks raise awareness about social issues such as alcohol use and violence against women. Beyond this, Prahallad has also focused on significant events like the Eram Massacre and the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the age of 82, Prahallad remains dedicated to his artistry, writing numerous poems and stories, and has established himself as an artist of repute.
Known affectionately as Guru Prahallad, he has been celebrated for his art both within the state and beyond. People admire both his magical touch with the paintbrush and the hidden enchantment of his innermost thoughts. He has taught many young men from his village, and guided them to eke out a living for themselves.
Whether it's lifeless wood or plain paper, everything springs to life at his touch. Prahallad has received numerous accolades at both governmental and non-governmental levels. However, despite his unique contributions, Prahallad is yet to receive any government support or artist's pension. His wife Malati Lata Pani stands by him, helping him in keeping his sculptures and artworks alive.
Local residents believe that with government support, Prahallad's art could be exhibited throughout the state and even outside Odisha as well.
