Odisha: Section 144 Clamped In 22 Villages In Kotia Area

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been clamped in 22 villages under Kotia panchayat. The Koraput district administration on Wednesday (April 7) imposed Section 144 in the villages owing to the rising cases of Covid-19. Sources said that the restrictions were imposed from 5PM of April 7th and will remain in force till 6PM of April 9th. For this, as many as 22 nodal officers with magistrate power will be on duty along with deployed police forces. Awareness was created in these villages through loudspeakers and residents have been asked not to venture out for unessential activities. The administration has completely banned the travel of vehicles in these 22 villages. It is pertinent to mention that the Andhra Pradesh High Court had made arrangements for conducting elections to the posts of ‘Panchayat Samiti’ and ‘Zilla Parishad’ members on April 8th in the Kotia area, which falls under Odisha’s jurisdiction.

#Covid19 BREAKING: India, Odisha Record Big Surge In Daily #Coronavirus Cases

On Thursday, the number of new coronavirus cases in India hit a record daily high since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country. With over 1.26 lakh new infections in the last 24 hours, India hit a grim milestone. The situation in the state of Odisha is no different. Odisha maintained an upward trend in the Covid-19 daily graph with a massive surge of 879 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. Out of the total cases detected in Odisha in last 24 hours, 518 have tested positive in quarantine while rest 361 are local transmission cases. Khordha district recorded maximum positive cases at 144, followed by Sundargarh which witnessed 131 new cases during the period. Similarly, Nuapada district stood third in the list with 61 new infections while Bargarh registered 53 cases. As many as 50 fresh Covid cases have been detected in Cuttack while the figure in Sambalpur stood at 48. Puri reported 45 cases, Kalahandi saw 43 cases, Ganjam 31 cases, Mayurbhanj 29 cases, and Keonjhar recorded 25 new cases. After today's surge, the total positive cases in Odisha climbed to 3,45,526. Odisha now has 4,888 active cases, while 3,38,662 patients have so far recovered from the disease. Meanwhile, India has become the 4th-worst hit country in terms of active cases. India with a big spike of 1,26,315 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, saw the biggest-ever daily surge, taking the tally to 1,29,28,789. According to Health Ministry, active cases have crossed the 9,00,000-mark and now stand at 9,10,319. India also witnessed a grim record of second-most fatalities due to Covid-19 in a single day in 2021, as 685 persons died of the virus.

He urged everyone eligible for the vaccine to take their vaccine doses soon by registering in Cowin. The Prime Minister also posted a picture of him receiving the jab. As per sources, Modi has taken ‘Covaxin’, which is India’s homegrown vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech. The nurses at AIIMS who administered Prime Minister the vaccine are - P Niveda from Puducherry and Nisha Sharma from Punjab.

40 ‘Vaccinated’ Doctors In UP Test Covid-19 Positive

Covid-19 cases are rising alarmingly and it seems the second wave is not going to be a smooth ride. Though the phase-wise vaccination drive which began in January brought some relief for people, a recent report from Uttar Pradesh’s King George's Medical University (KGMU) has raised serious concerns over the safety of all. As many as 40 doctors, already administered second dose of the vaccine, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The Vice Chancellor of the university has also contracted the virus. As per reports, this is the second time that the Vice Chancellor has been infected by the virus as he was tested positive in August last year. He was administered the second dose of vaccine on March 25. Reports said that most of the doctors have tested positive despite taking both the doses of vaccine. Samples of several other faculty members are being subjected to Covid tests after they complained of influenza-like symptoms on Tuesday (April 6) and their reports will be available later. Screening of entire staff in several departments was also done on Wednesday (April 7). Not only the KGMU, earlier, the heads of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Medanta hospital and Era Medical college have tested positive for COVID-19 even after getting vaccinated.

Odisha: GIET University Closed For 3 Days After Detection Of #COVID​-19 Cases

The Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology (GIET) University at Gunupur in Rayagada district, was closed for three days following the detection of Covid positive cases in the institution on Wednesday (April 7). As per a letter issued by the University Registrar, the university will remain closed from today (April 8) till April 10th. The decision was taken following an order from the Sub-Collector of Gunupur. As per the notification, restrictions have been imposed on the entry and exit of people in the campus, to curb the spread of the virus. The letter also stated that staff and students staying outside the campus will not be allowed entry into the campus during the three days. However, essential services will continue as usual. Those people staying within the campus have been asked to cooperate with the medical team and other government officers for strict maintenance of Covid guidelines.

Odisha Files Fresh Suit Against Andhra’s Plan to Conduct Elections In Kotia

Amid the prevailing border dispute, Odisha government has filed a fresh suit against Andhra Pradesh for issuing a notification to conduct Mandal and Zilla Parishad polls across the state, including in the disputed Kotia region under Koraput district of Odisha. Odisha government has moved the Apex Court to stop the neighbouring state from holding elections and has requested to treat Andhra’s move as contempt of court, if it goes ahead with the elections. This law suit from Odisha comes after Andhra Pradesh announced to hold election to the posts of ‘Samiti Members’ and ‘Zilla Parishad’ today (April 8). Earlier, a single-bench judge of Andhra High Court had stayed the poll notification issued by the State Election Commission, which was later squashed by a three-member judge bench on Wednesday (April 7), clearing the path for Andhra to hold the polls. As per the order, Andhra can hold the elections today but the counting of the same which was scheduled to take place on April 10th, have been postponed till further orders. On the other hand, leaders of BJD, BJP and Congress have camped at Kotia to register a joint protest against Andhra’s move. The Government of Andhra Pradesh is scheduled to conduct the polls at Tala Ganjeipadar, Phatusineri and Phagunasineri villages under Kotia Panchayat in Odisha.
