The AIIMS Bhubaneswar researchers found the rare species of fungus in a 26-year-old youth from Odisha in March, 2018.
Malignancy, recent chemotherapy, and a superimposed COVID-19 infection together drought down the immune system of the patient to dismally low levels.
"Black fungus is another family; this term got associated with mucormycosis due to the presence of black dots among the culture of white fungal colonies."
"This fungus is found in reptiles. I saw this disease for the first time. Amphotericin B injection is used to treat this disease. It takes a long time to heal. This patient's condition cannot be said to be very good, he is still undergoing treatment."
Amid rising cases of black fungus infection in India, another deadlier infection called white fungus is also raising concerns. At least four cases of white fungus infection have been reported in Patna, Bihar recently.
