A minor flood is likely in Mahanadi river provided heavy rainfall activities continue in upper catchment areas in Chhattisgarh and downstream in Odisha, said Engineer-in-chief, Water Resources Bijay Kumar Mishra on Saturday.
At present, Hirakud reservoir is discharging excess flood water through 28 sluice gates following incessant rain.
The dam authorities recently decided to release the excess floodwater following steady rise in the water level of the reservoir in the wake of incessant rainfall in the catchment area of the dam.
There has been substantial rise in the water-level of Hirakud dam due to heavy and incessant Rainfall. As a result, the season's first floodwater will be released from the reservoir on July 18 (Monday).
The Centre has approved the proposal for construction of a high-level bridge across Hirakud Dam, informed Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday.
Chief Engineer of Hirakud Dam, Ananda Chandra Sahu, said the survey work has started following the direction of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal.
