World food prices declined dramatically in July following the resumption of grain exports from Ukraine, according to the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The FAO Director-General outlined measures to be taken by the international community to address the situation.
The countries impacted most by the conflict are in the north African region, said FAO spokesperson Boubaker Ben Belhassen.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the biggest issue currently facing the agriculture sector is the fertiliser and fuel shortage.
Preliminary data collected by FAO, through ongoing assessments, demonstrates that farmers at all levels need cash to procure inputs and services for food production and to maintain their farming operations.
A global food crisis of this scale last seen in 2008, can still be averted, he added.
The FAO Meat Price Index increased by 4.8 per cent in March to reach an all-time high, led by surging pig meat prices related to a shortfall of slaughter pigs in Western Europe.
