Bhubaneswar/Rourkela: Tension prevailed on the premises of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, following Saturday’s clash between Indian and Afghan students in the campus.

Hundreds of students gathered in front of the main gate of the institute’s campus and shouted slogans late last night, said sources who witnessed the incident. Demanding quick action against the involved students, some Indian students had also staged a dharna in front of the main gate of the campus.

“We were beaten up, still FIRs have been lodged against us at Sector R-3 police station,” said one Indian student who did not wish to be named. However, sources said both the sides have lodged complaints.

Meanwhile, to sort out the issue the institute authority had convened a meeting of students, faculty members and college authorities on Monday. “The institute’s disciplinary committee has been asked to submit its report within two weeks. On the basis of that report further action will be taken,” said Sunil Sarangi, director, NIT, Rourkela.

To avoid any unpleasant situation the institute authorities have kept the Afghan students at Hill View guest house under police custody.

On Saturday night, around 10 students got injured in a clash between Indian and Afghan students during the annual festival.
