Cuttack: Marital discord took an ugly turn after a man went missing after jumping into Kathajodi River following an altercation with his wife on Wednesday.

The man has been identified as Debabrata Mohapatra, a resident of Karanja village under Niali Police limits in Cuttack district.

According to some eyewitnesses, Debabrata was passing over Kathajodi bridge on his motorcycle along with his wife when the couple had an argument. Soon after, he stopped on the bridge and jumped into the river.

“We were just passing over the bridge when we saw the husband and wife engaged in an altercation. By the time we reached near them, the man had already jumped into the river while his wife along with her child was trying to jump when we stopped her,” said an eyewitness.

“We saw her husband floating in the river. When I inquired, the woman said that they had a fight at their home,” the eyewitness added.

According to sources, the couple got married in 2014 and while Debabrata is reportedly working at Tata Steel, her wife is a teacher posted at Banakati Girl’s High School.

“My son-in-law has been torturing my daughter regularly for the past five years raising questions on her character. They had gone to Jajpur and were returning to Niali today,” said the father-in-law of Debabrata.

Meanwhile, ODRAF and fire services teams reached the spot and launched a massive search operation to trace the man. Besides, scuba divers have also been roped in to assist in the search operation.

On the other hand, police are questioning the wife.
