Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Contract Teachers’ Association on Thursday will gherao Naveen Nivas, the chief minister’s residence and Mass Education ministers’ residences here protesting government’s decision to cancel the appointments 4,000 contractual teachers done in June this year.
The teachers’ body will gherao the chief minister and Mass Education ministers’ residences alleging irresponsible attitude of state government the appointment of the contractual teachers.
Pradipta Kumar Pradhan, President of Odisha Government High School Contract Teachers’ Association, said, “Thousands of contractual teachers will hold a rally from Master Canteen square to Lower PMG square. Later, they will march towards Naveen Nivas and gherao the CM’s residence. Similarly, the teachers’ body will gherao Mass Education ministers’ residence.”
“Even after six days have passed, the State government is yet to take any decision over the cancellation of appointments of contractual teachers. We will intensify our stir which will force the government to reappoint the teachers,” Pradhan added.
Earlier on November 23, around four thousand contractual teachers in State took to the streets in protest of State government’s decision to cancel their appointments over irregularities. The teachers staged demonstrations at the office of the district education officer at various places. In Bhubaneswar, the protesting teachers staged a road blockade near Master Canteen area.
Notably, the State government had published advertisements in 2014 for recruitment of 5,364 contractual teachers challenging which several petitions were filed in Odisha Administrative Tribunal (OAT) alleging anomalies in the eligibility criteria related to age, educational qualification and reservation.
Later, the Orissa High Court stayed the order of Tribunal on June 11, 2015 over the recruitment. Despite the stay, the government appointed the teachers on contractual basis. Contempt of court petitions were filed in the High Court acting on which the court served show-cause notices on School and Mass Education Department.
Subsequently, the government thorough its Advocate General informed the court that it will cancel the appointments.
A case was filed against the state government alleging irregularity in the appointment process. As a follow up of the case, the State government on Friday informed the Orissa High Court that it would cancel all the appointments of contractual teachers done in the academic session of 2014-15.
