Cuttack: With an aim to tackle the increasing number of cases of cyber crimes such as phishing, online fraud and cheating, the Odisha Crime Branch on Wednesday organised a special training programme titled ‘State level specialized training course on cyber crime investigation and forensics’ at its headquarters in Cuttack.

The one day training programme, led by Crime Branch DG B K Sharma, was attended by around 60 police inspectors in-charge (IICs), two from each district, from across the state.

“This is part of the series training programs we have been organising over the years. Cyber crime is an extremely important area and everyone in the police force should be familiar with it. It is a great opportunity from people from different police stations where such technical knowledge is not available,” Sharma told the officers.

“When you go back, register more and more of cyber crime cases so that Odisha police is not dubbed as a police force that lacks technical knowledge to investigate cyber offences,” he advised the officers.

He said there is a plan to open a cyber crime police station in Bhubaneswar for which the state government had already allotted the required land.

The workshop was attended by many cyber experts of the state along with senior officials of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) – Kolkata.

Experts guided the officers through various techniques of investigation and the sections to be invoked while pressing charges for different types of cases of cyber crime, said a police officer present in the workshop.

The police officers have got training on handling cases like hacking, crimes pertaining to social media, online fraud, ATM fraud and fraud committed through phone calls.
