Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain will lash most parts of coastal Odisha in the next 24 hours under the influence of a Depression, a Met release said here today.

Talking to the media, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said the well marked low pressure area over south-east Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood has concentrated into a Depression at 5.30 AM today over central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal and moved north-westwards with a speed of about 20 kmph during past three hrs and lay centred at 8.30 PMover central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal near Latitude 13.5º N and Longitude 86.5 ºE, about 750 km south of Paradip.

“The system is very likely to move initially north-westwards during next 24 hrs and then re-curve north-eastwards towards Bangladesh coast during next 48 hours. It is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hours and subsequently into a cyclonic storm,” he added.

Sahu further said under its influence, rain or thundershower is likely to occur at most places over coastal Odisha and at a few places over interior Odisha while heavy rainfall is most likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha in the next 24 hours.

“Rainfall in the coastal Odisha will continue from October 4 to 5 after which there will be a change in the weather condition,” he pointed out.

In view of the depression, distant cautionary signal number-1 (DC-I) has been hoisted at all ports in the Odisha. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea while the fishermen in the deep sea are advised to return to the coasts at the earliest as the surface wind speed from north-east direction with 45-55 KMPH with gusting up to 65 KMPH would prevail along and off the Odisha coast will make the sea condition rough to very rough.

Following the IMD bulletin, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) in a message asked the district collectors to keep a close watch on the situation and take necessary measures to deal with it.
