Cuttack: Animal lovers and school children made a beeline on Sunday at the campus of Bhubananda Orissa School of Engineering (BOSE) to witness a Siberian Husky and an Alaskan Malamute, which made debut in the Cuttack dog show this year.
Organised jointly by Rotary Club and Pasu Seva Sadan, the event drew around 200 pet animals and huge crowd at the ground of oldest tech institute of the State. The programme was inaugurated by Justice AS Naidu.
Though polite breeds like Pugs, Pomeranians, Dalmatians and Labradors attracted visitors with their antics, the show stealers were debutant Alaskan Malamute and Siberain Husky, said organising secretary of the event Basant Sahoo, who is also head of the Pasu Seva Sadan.
“Alaskan Malamute emerged champion. Prizes were also distributed for first, second and third position holders in all small, medium and large breed categories”, Sahoo added.
The most liked dog and some large breeds like St Bernard, Bull Mastiff, Nap Mastiff and English Mastiff were other attractions at the show.
While the organisers tested the dogs on various skills and tasks to ascertain the best breed, their proud owners gave the audience detailed information about the breeds and their characteristics. The walking style, tricks and obedience quotient of the dogs held the audience in awe.
The show has aimed at eliminating menace of stray dog in the millennium city. “The event spread awareness among the dog owners and audiences about the care and maintenance of dogs. Now-a-days, number of pet dogs is growing in the city. Many of the owners are not aware about taking care of the animals. We made them aware about immunisation, food and medicine of dogs. We also urged the audiences to support family planning initiative of the stray dogs which can check their menace in the city,” Sahoo maintained.
The programme was inaugurated by justice AS Naidu while SK Ray addressed gathering. Former DGP Gopal Nanda also graced the occasion among other eminent personalities.
