Nuakhai 2021: Nabanna Lagi Timing Finalised In Bolangir

The auspicious timing for the conduct of Nabanna Lagi ritual (offering of newly harvested rice) as part of the mass agrarian festival of western Odisha, Nuakhai, has been finalised.

Based on the age-old tradition and astrological calculation, the Pundit Mahasabha in Bolangir which ordains the nitis for the festival has fixed the timing for offering of the new harvest between 10.19 am and 10.40 am on September 11.

On the auspicious occasion, all households of the district will offer Nabanna to their presiding deity Goddess Pataneswari and Samaleswari as mark of gratitude for good harvest, rain and favourable weather for farming.

Nuakhai is the most important agrarian festival in western Odisha and is celebrated with pomp and gaiety in several districts like Sambalpur, Bolangir, Bargarh, Sundergarh, Kalahandi, Deogarh, Jharsuguda Boudh and Sonepur.

Rengali Dam Releases Season's First Floodwaters

The management authorities of the Rengali Dam laid across the Brahmani River in Angul have released the season's first floodwaters from the dam. In view of the steady rise in the water level in the reservoir due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area, the officials have opened one gate of the dam to discharge the floodwaters. 

As per the latest data available, the water level in the dam stood at 119.84 metre against the maximum level of 123.50 metre. The inflow of the water into the dam stood at 1360 cubic metre per sec while the outflow of the floodwater was 1450 cubic metre, informed the dam authorities.

The residents living in the low-lying areas of the river in Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur and Kendrapara have been asked to remain alert for any possible eventuality.

Covid-19: Odisha Logs 1,315 Cases, 66 Deaths

Odisha on Wednesday reported 1,315 fresh Covid-19 cases, pushing the tally to 9,82,181 while the death toll mounted to 6,168  with 66 more fatalities, informed the State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department.

With this, the State now has 13,872 active cases, and as many as 9,62,088 patients, including 1,702 in the last 24 hours, have recovered from the disease so far, added the H&FW Department.

Of the new cases, 762 were reported from quarantine centres and the rest 553 are local contact cases.

Khordha district, which comprises the state capital Bhubaneswar, reported the highest 413 cases while Cuttack with 198 cases remained second in the list. Jharsuguda reported no case today while the rest 27 districts detected cases less than 100, as per the data shared by Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department. 

In terms of death, 18 fatalities were reported from Khordha, 10 deaths from Cuttack, 9 deaths from Puri, 6 from Mayurbhanj, 5 from Puri. Three each cases were reported from Jajpur and Jharsuguda, two each from Nayagarh, Bhadrak and Bolangir and one each from Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Kendrapara and Sundargarh districts.

Odisha has so far conducted 1,62,23,921 crore sample tests for COVID-19, including 59,378 on Tuesday. The cumulative test positivity rate stands at 1.9  percent.
