A Superintendent Engineer with the Drainage division at Jajpur, Chandi Prasad Mohapatra, was arrested by the Odisha Vigilance on Wednesday while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 to clear outstanding dues of hired vehicles by the department.

The anti-corruption agency has also launched simultaneous searches at the houses of Mohapatra located in Bhubaneswar and Tirtol following his arrest, informed the DSP, Vigilance Cuttack division, Surendra Rayguru.

According to reports, Mohapatra had demanded the bribe from the owner of a vehicle, who had rented out his vehicle to the Drainage division, to clear his outstanding dues. The owner had approached the anti corruption agency with the complaint following which a trap was laid in the morning. When the government official accepted the bribe money, the waiting Vigilance sleuths caught him red handed. He was subsequently put under arrest.

Nevertheless, the arrest of Mohapatra comes close on the heels of the arrest of Biranchi Sahool, Private Secretary (PS) to a member of the Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) by the Vigilance Department for amassing property and wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. On Wednesday, the Enforcement Directorate registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Biranchi who has been sent on voluntary retirement following his arrest.

The arrest of Biranch has kicked off a storm in the State with demand for unearthing the links of the lower rung staff with higher ups in the department in a suspected recruitment scam in the OSSC growing louder with each passing day.

The Vigilance has so far unearthed property worth Rs 3.79 crore in the name of Sahoo during the probe.
