The deadline for filing taxes is July 31, 2023, and failure to meet this deadline can result in penalties. In 2022, individuals who missed their tax filings were fined accordingly.

If the total income did not exceed Rs 5 lakh, the maximum penalty for delay was limited to Rs 1,000.

Meanwhile, currently, individuals are receiving official messages from the tax department urging them to file their taxes promptly.

These messages are being sent to everyone, including those who may not have any income.

If you are a student or have never filed taxes before, there is no need to worry about these messages.

The reason individuals are receiving these messages is because they are registered in the Income Tax e-portal section.

During the Pan Aadhaar linking process, many users registered in the income tax portal, which is why they are receiving such messages.

The message typically reads as follows: "Dear GCXXXXXX7D, avoid last week rush. File ITR early at the e-Filing portal. Due date 31st July 2023. Ignore if filed.ITDept."

It is important to note that this is a general and system-generated message. Mostly, individuals with taxable income need to be concerned about it.

No penalties, taxes, or interest will be applicable if you are not liable to pay taxes.
